  “Thank you,” I said. “This is a time for coming together. Some people might not agree with us, but we need to pay our respects.”

  Jacob’s sour face hardly changed, but he was silent, at the very least. All of the guests finished their dinner in silence. When it was time to clear the table, Jacob walked into the backyard to smoke a cigarette. Meanwhile, Cole entered into the deserted kitchen.

  I ran the warm water against the soapy dishes. I held my breath, sensing his presence. “Don’t. Please don’t,” I whispered.

  Cole ran his hand against the top of my shoulder, sliding down my back before returning to the other side of the room. My muscles tightened, but my stomach filled with butterflies. I closed my eyes and tried to remain calm.

  “How are you, Piper?” he asked.

  I kept the water running, but I turned around. “We can’t talk here. Please, Cole. You know this,” I whispered.

  Cole took a step back, feeling lost and confused. “Piper, we grew up together. I just wanted to… Fuck, I just wanted to see you again, to know how you were doing.”

  “Yeah?” I asked, angrily. “And how does it look like I’m doing?”

  Cole bit the inside of his lip and glanced down at my legs. I shifted back and suddenly wished I could cover them with a coat. His face turned red, but I couldn’t sense what emotion he was feeling. All I could do was smell his cologne, the same exact scent I remembered all these years.

  “It’s not my fault,” Cole said. “You know that. I told you. I had to leave.”

  “No,” I said, clenching my teeth. “That’s not what you told me. I begged you to leave with me. You said it was impossible. The next month, you were gone. You left for the city without telling a soul.”

  Cole’s body was shaking, but he quickly regained control of his emotions. “I didn’t know how much I would hurt you,” Cole said. “I thought I was doing you a favor. Your parents made it perfectly clear that you and Jacob were in love.”

  “Love?” I nearly screamed the word. I shook my head wildly and turned around. I was done with this conversation. “Screw him,” I thought. Then, in the act of admitted selfishness, I added, “Yes. We are very happy here.”

  Cole was about to react, but Jacob quickly returned to the room, wiping his hands clean. Jacob put his arms around me. “So, you two are having a reunion of sorts,” Jacob said.

  “I was just telling Cole that you have made a lovely home here,” I said with a weak smile.

  “Well, I’m happy for you both,” Cole said, grimacing.

  “Thank you,” Jacob said, proudly. “We make do with what we have. It’s ideal, anyway.”

  Cole nodded, unsure of what to say. Jacob removed his arm from around my waist. I immediately felt a weight lift from my shoulders.

  “Where are you staying?” Jacob asked.

  Cole looked toward the front door. All of his bags were lined up neatly, next to his heavy boots. “Don’t worry about me. There’s a hotel a few miles away. I’ll catch a cab and book a room,” Cole said.

  Jacob’s broad smile confused me. “No, that won’t do! You should stay with us,” he said. “We have an extra room downstairs. It’s comfortable here, and you’re practically family.”

  Practically family? I didn’t expect those words to come from my boyfriend’s mouth. I turned around and finished with the dishes, hoping that Cole would find a way to leave in peace.

  Instead, Cole smiled and let out a heavy sigh. “Well, if it’s not too much trouble, I guess I could stay here for a few nights. I can book a flight for the day after the funeral,” Cole said.

  “That sounds wonderful. We have a lot of catching up to do. It’s been so long since we’ve all seen each other. Since the charter school, right?” Jacob asked. Cole nodded solemnly.

  Cole had changed so much these years. His face was rough around the edges. His eyes bore a deep pain, but they suggested that he had found some peace within himself. Even though I didn’t recognize him in the same way I used to, his habits were the same.

  “Yeah. Since the charter school days. What fun.” Cole laughed, awkwardly pausing when my boyfriend and I stood in silence.

  “Well, let me get your things,” Jacob said before embracing him. “So glad to have you back.”

  I felt the tears coming, but I held them back. I turned off the sink and smiled. “I’ll show you to your room,” I said.
