I put the key in the ignition and turned it, but it wouldn’t start. I wrinkled my eyes at the car.

Come on baby, don’t do this to me!

Was my car trying to tell me something too?

“Seriously, not now!” I said out loud, and then I heard a tapping. I turned and found Claudia standing outside my window.

“Claudia?” I whispered, feeling like a weakened fool. But I was so delighted at the sight of her. I opened the door and climbed out of the car, and immediately she wrapped her arms around me.

“I didn’t mean it!” Claudia sobbed. “I just didn’t want you to go!”

  “I know,” I answered. “I know, sweetheart, I know.”

  I looked at her.

“I couldn’t let you leave without saying goodbye!” Claudia again said.

I grinned at her. Then she motioned a finger, and my Shelby came to life!

“I’m sorry,” she again said. I laughed, holding her tightly in my arms.

“I should have known,” I said, as she pressed closer to me. I looked up, worried now more than ever. I wanted to stay and protect her. She needed me, but I would only do more harm by staying.

“You have to try not do that again, okay?” I whispered, holding her tightly. She wouldn’t let me go.

“I won’t,” she softly answered. I gently pulled her back. I looked at school entrance where Michael was standing nearby, and he smiled back at me and merely waved.

“I have to go now, okay?” I said, and my eyes began to tear up. I had to get away before I fell apart.

“Okay,” Claudia softly whispered back before letting me go. I looked at her as she gazed back at me.

“Promise me I’ll see you again,” she said.

  I swallowed hard. I couldn’t make promises I couldn’t keep.

  You know you can’t, John.

She noticed the expression on my face. “Please,” Claudia pleaded. “Even if it’s not the truth. Please just say it anyways.”

I nodded, feeling a tear escape my eye. I tried to smile as I lied, “I promise you’ll see me again.” I wiped at her tears, refusing to admit I had some of my own to wipe.

Claudia held me again, and a breath escaped her lips. She pulled back, and I leaned down and place a kissed on her forehead, and then, with a great struggle, I opened the door to my Shelby and climbed in.

I sat there for a moment, staring back at her as she looked back at me. She managed a smile for me, and I returned the smile and put the car into gear. And as I began to drive away I found her figure in the rearview mirror, standing in the parking lot and watching me disappear from her life perhaps forever. And that’s when I lost it. I wanted to stop, but the Man in Blue wouldn’t let me.

Man up, he scolded, at least she’s safe from us now, he cruelly hissed.

I lost her figure when I pulled out of the parking lot and onto the street. Taking a breath, I did nothing to stop the few tears that now escaped me. I wiped them off and put my foot on the gas pedal and sped away, leaving Milton behind.
