Her Hero After Dark

“What the hell’s going on, Jenn?”

She took a deep breath. “I had to choose. A bone marrow transplant from Leland or the drugs. They made me choose. Gemma had to use massive doses of the stem cells on you. She thinks the changes to your bones are permanent. I hope you don’t mind being a superhero for the rest of your life.”

She’d chosen the drugs for him? She had known what he would want, and she’d set aside her own desires for him? If he’d loved her before, he positively worshipped her now.

He must have come pretty close to dying to put those dark circles under her eyes. One thing was for sure. Life was too short and too uncertain to waste a single minute of it. “Jennifer, I can’t exactly get down on one knee at the moment, and I don’t have a diamond ring at hand—although I promise to buy you an enormous one—but will you marry me?”

She stared down at him and her hand clenched his convulsively.

When she didn’t answer he added in desperation, “I love you with all my heart. I have no idea what the future will hold for me, particularly in light of my new physical status. But I’d give anything to spend it with you, come what may.”

“Come what may,” she repeated softly.

“Is that a yes?” he asked cautiously.

“For better or worse, in sickness and in health,” she said reflectively.

“That is a yes, isn’t it?” he demanded.

“Yes, Jeff. Oh, yes. Count me in. I wouldn’t miss this ride for anything in the world.”

She leaned down to kiss him, and he found the strength to raise his left arm and pull her even closer against him. For her, he’d always find the strength. She was his wellspring. His life. His one true love. With her at his side, they could accomplish anything. She was what made him a superhero.

He murmured against her lips, “If you’re going to be my sidekick, you need a cool nickname.”

  “How about Mrs. Winston?”

  “That’s perfect.”

  Perfect, indeed.
