The phone rings in my pocket and I scramble to get it out in time.
“Hello” I mutter, not knowing the number.
“Jake, it’s good to hear from you” Percy’s voice meets my ears and I cringe, I try to pass Jax the phone but it never reaches his open hand.
I growl as he slams on the brakes, the car skids out of control and I glance into Jax’s fearful eyes.
The car rolls and blackness fills my mind.

“Jake! Jake! Wake up!” I hear a faraway voice shouting.
I try to move but my body is pinned by something. I panic and a yell escapes my lips.
“Jax!” I shout, unable to see him.
“I’m fine, you’re stuck under the car. Don’t worry we are on it” Jax replies and I sigh in relief.
I realise the faraway voice is Percy on the phone and I grab it. I chuckle when I see that the little phone is unharmed.
“Percy?” I cough.
“We are on our way, what did you hit?” He asks and I frown.
“I don’t know” I shake my hair out of my eyes. Warm liquid rolls down my head and I try to lift my hand to it but my arms have been pinned at my sides.
“It sounded like one hell of a crash,” Percy says.
“It is” I mutter, my heart speeds up as adrenaline fades from my limbs. I groan as wounds make themselves known.
I hear a car speeding towards us and I yelp while trying to wriggle out from under the car.
“It’s just Percy” Jax shouts to ease my panic.
My struggles slow and I wait for my pack to help me out of a situation that I’m not even sure how it happened.
I hear a loud growl and metal straining. Jax’s face appears and I grin at him.
“Hey, fancy seeing you here. Do you come here often?” I laugh.
“He hit his head real bad” Jax turns and shouts, I roll my eyes.
I hum to myself as I wait for Percy and the others to get the car off me. I lose feeling in my limb and I have to shove panic away.
“Got it, on my count” I hear Percy shout and I cry out as the car is lifted away from me.
Jax rushes to my side and I see fear in his eyes.
“It’s not that bad” I grin and try to get up to show him I’m fine but my legs refuse to work and I collapse back to the ground.
“We need to go” Percy mutters and I growl as he picks me up.
He places me in the back of his car and Jax slides in next to me. His wolves tail us in wolf form as we drive the rest of the way back home.
I watch Jax the whole ride. He glances at me every now and then and I can see shame in his eyes.
“It wasn't your fault” I mutter but Jax shakes his head.
“I wasn't watching the road” He replies.
“So? Loads of people get in crashes, it’s the most normal thing I’ve been involved in since I was born” I chuckle. Jax shakes his head with a chuckle.
“Trust you to say something like that” He mutters with a faint smile.
The rest of the ride is silent with everyone lost in their own thoughts.
Chapter Sixteen
I yawn as the car rolls to a stop, my eyes adjust to the fading light and I nearly cry when I see the pack house. My pack wait for us outside and I choke down a sob at seeing my mum and dad, they hold each other like they have just found the most precious thing in the world.
My heart clenches at the thought of all the pain I have caused them.
Jax smiles at me before throwing open the door and rushing to his mate, I chuckle when she slams into him with such force that I can hear it from where I am.
Percy picks me up careful and starts carrying me towards the house. I cringe as Holly rushes forward with tears streaming down her face.
Percy sets me down and lingers near me just in case. Holly crashes into me and I pull her closer, my wolf purrs in my mind and I chuckle as I breath in her scent.
“I'm so sorry” I whisper into her ear.
“It doesn’t matter now” She replies.
Nat and Reece walk towards us while Ivan stands back. I grin at Reece who smiles at me.
Nat hugs me before I feel the sharp sting of a slap to the face.
“I deserved that” I mutter, rubbing my jaw.
“Yeah you did” She chuckles and I grin at her.
I follow them into the house and gingerly sit down on the sofa. Nat sits next to me and flicks on the tv.
I chuckle when my favourite film comes on.
“Mum has been watching it over and over since you got caught” Nat sighs.
“Well I’m back now and I’m not going anywhere” I smile at her.
“Good to have you back man” Reece slaps me on the shoulder and I chuckle.
Mum comes in with food, I take the plate and smile at her before tucking in. I cannot remember the last time I had food.
Once I have eaten I rub my eyes to chase away the dream world. Nat sees this and stands up without a word.
Both her and Reece help me to my room without a word.
“Love you Jake” Nat whispers before shutting the door.
Holly opens the door and I smile at her. She closes it and pads to the bed. I pull her close to me and I focus on her breathing.
“I wanna do the mating as soon as we can” She bursts out.
“What?” I ask, unsure if I heard her correctly.
“You’re my mate and I want everyone to know that,” She says.
“Okay, we can do it whenever you want” I sigh into her hair.
“Thank you” She giggles as I tuck a stray hair between her ear.
We lapse into silence. I hold Holly as if someone is going to come and rip her away from me.
My wolf screams in my mind that we need to protect her even from our selves.
My eyes scan the darkness of my room. I find no comfort to be home but find comfort in being with my mate and my pack.
“You need to sleep” Holly whispers after what feels like hours.
“I can’t” I mutter.
Holly turns in my arms and kisses me on the lips. My fears disappear as she deepens the kiss.
“I’ll be here when you wake,” She says into my ear.
“I know but I don't want anything to happen while I sleep. I know I’m going to be in a deep sleep” I reply.
“You don't have to be strong all the time” She hugs me.
“I need to be” I sigh, pulling at my hair.
“Not when I’m here, I’ll be strong for the both of us” She whispers.
“And that’s why I love you” I chuckle then freeze at my words.
“I love you too” She replies, I can see her smile even though the room is pitch black.
“Good, you're stuck with me now” I laugh and she giggles before leaning her head on my shoulder. I close my eyes and let sleep claim me, knowing that Holly can take care of herself while I sleep.
Chapter Seventeen
Something moves next to me and I growl. My eyes fly open and I see Holly smiling at me. I chuckle as I pull her back down. She kisses my nose and I sigh with happiness.
“I’m glad this wasn't a dream,” I say.
“I’m glad too” She replies before jumping up from the bed.
I quickly grab some clothes and shove them on. Holly disappears and comes back with fresh clothes on and I chuckle.
“Ready?” She asks with a hand on my arm.
“With you, I’ll always be ready” I smile.
Holly opens the door and I cringe at the sounds of the pack that greet my ears. Holly leads me into the living room where Nat, Reece, Jax and Maddie are.
“How are you feeling?” Jax asks.
“Better than in a long time” I laugh.
“We are heading out soon if you want to come?” Nat says and I frown at her.
“Doing what?” I reply.
“We are still hunting vampires. It’s the best chance we have” She shrugs and I shiver.
/> “Sure” I nod but the wolf within warns me not to go.
Nat nods and places a hand on my shoulder as she walks past me. I jump up onto a chair and grab some toast. My stomach growls and Reece chuckles while handing me some beans, eggs and bacon.
“Enjoy” He grins as he leaves the room.
I tuck into the food, not caring if people are watching me. Once I’ve eaten it all I pat my belly which gurgles. Holly laughs at me and I grin. I follow Jax outside and see a whole team getting ready to head out.
“How long are we going out for,” I ask.
“A day or two” Jax shrugs and I shiver.
I climb into the car and wait for the others to join me, Jax hands me a gun and my eyes widen.
“We found out how to slow the vampires down” Jax explains the need for a gun.
“Fair enough” I shrug and put the gun on the seat next to me.
“We found a stronghold,” Jax says as he climbs in the car. I raise my eyebrows at him driving.
“Yeah maybe you should drive” He chuckles and I nod.
I jump out and run around to the other side. Jax sits in the passenger seat while three others I don’t know climb in the back. I pull the car onto the road and frown as the others follow me.
“We are going in first” Jax says and points down another road.
I turn down it and wait for Jax to give me any other directions. We drive in a tense silence for fifty miles before Jax tells me to turn left.
“Here” He whispers and I pull the car to a stop. Jax jumps out and rushes to the boot.
I grab my gun and shove it in my belt. Jax hands me a machine gun and my jaw drops when I see a rocket launcher.
“What the hell” I shake my head.
“After you got caught we started packing more firepower. I didn't want anyone else to get taken or injured so we started uses bigger guns” Jax laughs.
Jax hands me an earpiece and I place it in my ear with a shake of my head.
“You have really got it together” I mutter.
“Yep” Jax replies and I jump, I roll my eyes when he chuckles and points to the earpiece.
“Get ready everyone, we need to get in and get out without anyone hurt” Jax whispers and I hear muttered agreements.
I follow Jax who jogs around the back of the building. Half of the team follow us while the other half go to the front of the building.
I crouch next to Jax who lifts his hand up, everyone tenses and waits for his mark. I hear a click of a big gun before a loud explosion rocks the ground we stand on.
Jax grins at me and I shake my head with an answering smile. He turns back and I shiver as we wait.
Chapter Eighteen
Jax counts on his fingers before jumping into action. I cringe as I run with him, gunfire erupts around us and I have to fight the panic that threatens to take over me.
A vampire launches towards us and I lift my gun. My finger squeezes the trigger and the vampire slows down enough for my eyes to pick up its movements.
I shove my gun away and grab my knife. The vampire hisses at me but I quickly take him down before he can sink his fangs into my throat.
I cover Jax as he shoves his way into the building where vampires are getting ready to attack us.
I look around for the rest of the team but my eyes cannot pick them up over the smoke that fills my senses.
“Jax is this a bad idea” I yell of the chaos.
“We need to do it” He yells back.
I turn and kick a vampire away. He comes at me again and I cry out as he shoves me to the ground. I wrestle to grab my gun from my belt but the vampire is stronger.
“Jake!” I hear someone shout and the vampire is thrown away from me. I take the hand that appears and I sigh in relief at my teammate.
“Where is Jax? We need to fall back” He says and I nod.
“I don’t know where he is but I’m agreeing that we need to fall back” I reply.
“You go, get everyone out safe and I’ll find Jax. Howl if you need us” I say and my teammate shakes his head.
“Look if you stay we could all die! The vampires will attack back and my mate will die too! Please, you have to go and save what you can of our pack” I shove him back towards the exit.
“Fine but come back to us alive” He replies before darting back the way he came.
I turn and blindly search for Jax. His scent tingles in my nose but so does the smoke which makes it impossible to track him.
“Jax!” I yell, hoping he can hear me. I choke down a sob at the thought of my friend lost.
My wolf demands we shift and I sigh before agreeing. We can cover more ground in wolf form.
I let the shift happen. Not even bothering to take my clothes off, I leap into the air and by the time I land the shift is complete and I’m running down a hallway.
I see blurs of movement but I ignore them as I search for Jax. A scream has my head whipping to the right. I see five vampires with a body curled up on the ground, Jax I think to myself.
I launch myself at one of the vampires. My teeth rip into him before he can even turn, I pull him down before darting into the ring of vampires.
I growl and rise my fur. One vampire chuckles at my attempt to scare him. I snarl as he takes a step closer.
My muscles tense as I get ready to spring at him. Jax groans and my head jerks towards him, I see blood pooling around his body and I know I need to get him out of here now otherwise he will die. I silently curse him for getting into these situations.
“Jax!” I hear a bellow from the doorway and my heart skips a beat when I see his brother walking towards us with a murderous look on his face.
“I. Told. You. To. Leave. My. Brother. Alone” He roars. The vampires shrink back but I take a step towards him, he isn't going to hurt him while I’m alive.
Instead of attacking me like I thought he would, he turns on his own kind. One second we are surrounded and the next Jax’s brother is stood with blood and guts all over him.
“Jake, get him out of here,” Jax’s brother says while throwing clothes at me.
I let the shift happen without closes my eyes. Jax’s brothers watches over us while I shift.
I pull on the clothes and stumbles as blood runs down my side. I pull up the shirt and gasp when I see a vampire bite along my ribs. Jax’s brother shakes his head and walks away.
“Wait!” I call out, he turns back to me.
“I never wanted this. Why do you think he was out in the woods on his own?” He mutters and my jaw drops.
“You left him?” I growl.
“He had no idea what he was or how to control it! He nearly died” I yell, anger bubbling within me.
“I had too! He is caught up in the war now! I never wanted him near this war. I tried to keep him from it” He yells and disappears, I frown before turning back to Jax who is as white as a sheet.
Chapter Nineteen
I gather my best friend in my arms, fever runs through my own limbs but I know if I don't do this we will both die. One of us is better than two of us.
I panic at the coolness of Jax’s skin. I cough as smoke fills my lungs and I stumble from the vampire venom that rushes rapidly through my veins.
Hopelessness fills my mind as I choke down a sob, Holly will kill me if I die.
That thought pulls me through and I grit my teeth and shove away from the wall and stumble through the half burning building.
“You will never make it” I turn to see Jax’s brother tailing us.
“I don't need to but Jax does and I’m going to get him as close to my team as I can” I reply, determination fills me.
Jax’s brother shakes his head and walks to me with his hands up. I frown as he takes Jax from me and carries on the path I was taking.
“If I carry him you both can live and fight this war together, I was wrong about you. You stood up to the vampires, you knew you could die but you did it anyway” He shakes his head as if not believing I could do it
.
“He is my best friend, I could never just walk away. He saved me first” I mutter with a frown, I know the vampire can hear me but he doesn't reply.
I gasp as I feel the venom reach my heart, I grab the wall to stop from falling over and Jax’s brother watches me with concern.
“What? You tried to kill me and now what to make sure I’m okay” I manage to chuckle.
“You’re strange” Jax’s brother replies which cause me to double over in a laughing/coughing fit.
“That’s what Jax said to me” I shake my head and push away from the wall.
“He's a smart one” The vampire sighs and I nod.
I stumble again and Jax’s brother shoves my shoulder to keep me standing, I nod to him before carrying on my path.
Jax groans and I turn to watch his brother gently stroke a hair away from his face.
“I do love him, I just need to be harsh. Once you get home you can never tell him about this, act like you want to rip me apart” Jax’s brother says.
“Okay, just know if you need somewhere to go you can come to us” I reply with a smile, my view of the vampire changed forever.
“I have to leave you here, your team will kill me. Can you carry him the rest of the way?” He asks, looking me up and down.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine” I smile.
I take Jax from him and grit my teeth at his added weight. I nod to the vampire who waves before disappearing.
I let out a howl, my voice cuts through the air and I pray that my team will hear me over all the other sounds.
Another howl meets my ears and I collapse to the ground with Jax curled up on my knees.
I see forms running towards us and I smile as my head drops to my chest. I feel my heartbeat slowing down.
On instinct, I glance to my right and see Jax’s brother watching from a safe distance. I nod and he smiles before sitting down and waiting for my team to reach us.
“Jake! Jax? What happened!” Someone says and I mutter about the vampires.
I tell them about Jax being caught in a circle of them and how we both nearly died. I tell them about me having to fend them off and about a vampire biting me. I tell them about me carrying my best friend here.
