Face serious, he shook his head. “You are safe, that is all I wanted. I was talking with Red,” he said, his tone smoothing out. “He says Telly thinks you should be able to go back to the ranch. It’s unlikely the damage to the wards there was permanent.”
Emma looked up at him, but his gaze was on the horizon. There was a familiar tension in the way he held himself; he was uncertain now. Uncertain of her.
She leaned against the railing next to him. “I don’t want to go back.” Surprised, he looked down at her. “I don’t want to go back to the ranch.”
He made a thoughtful noise. “Where do you want to go?”
Emma’s pulse jumped. Was he right? Had she lost her nerve now that she had him? She had no idea if what he’d said could possibly be true — if it could actually be okay to care about more than one person the way she cared about Alexi. Maybe she wouldn’t be able to figure it out, maybe it would all go up in flames, maybe she’d ruin everything.
Maybe the end of the world really was coming, and she couldn’t afford to waste any more time.
She stood up, pushing away from the railing. “I don’t know where I want to go,” she said. “I know I have to find Rain’s brother, Storm. I know we need to find out all we can about the Brotherhood, because if they survived, they’ll come after me and everyone I care about.” Emma bit her lip for a moment, and then spoke again, quieter this time. “I don’t know what to do, about any of it, but I know how I feel about you. I don’t want to give you up. Will you stay with me?”
He turned. He looked at her, studied her, with the same unforgiving gaze he’d fixed on her the very first time they’d laid eyes on each other.
Then he smiled, and it was sunrise dawning in his eyes. “I will.”

Twenty four hours after the Sleeping God awakened and the serpent priesthood was all but destroyed, Red Sun and Ivan rematerialized in the Moscow hotel room.
The airconditioning hummed.
They looked at each other.
Horne’s body was gone.
