“I understand,” Samuel said with a nod.
“What will you do now? The Embassy still sees you both as apostates,” Samuel said.
“You could speak for us.”
“I will do my best,” Samuel said. “Yet, I don’t think one voice can do anything.”
“One voice can do more than you think,” Pieter said.
“And the boy?”
“Continue his training on my own. It happened before the founding of the Embassy. We will learn and grow and fight these Khal.”
“Think they are still out there?”
“Yes. There isn’t a doubt in my mind. This isn’t over, Samuel.”
Samuel continued to talk for a few moments, yet Pieter was ignoring him. The Hunter looked out at the æther, looking at Benny and the one freed Ilvan slaveships, the other seven Ilvan in a protective ring around the three. He smiled at the thought that the Ilvan had joined the cause, yet had no idea what was coming next.
THE END OF PART ONE
EPILOUGE
Makka came to, restrained. Her first impulse was to escape. She gritted her teeth and tried to break free from the restraints. She was stuck fast. She looked around not sure where she was. The last thing she remembered was running from the other Cerberi. Somehow, they had found out she was a plant from Saheed. She hoped that Saheed was still alive.
She reached out to embrace the Void and felt blocked. Not by a shield, at least no shield she had ever felt before. She hammered away at whatever it was blocking her. She stopped when she started to breath harder. It shouldn’t be this difficult. Even a shield of another Cerberi or Hunter would have a little give. Something is very—
“Having an issue?” a voice asked through a loudspeaker. It was odd, it sounded familiar yet not. Then, she heard a door open and close behind her.
“Comfy?” The familiar voice asked again. This time it was clear who it was.
“Samuel?” she asked, turning her head as best she could. “What is going on?”
“Oh, my dear. You were captured. Your precious Saheed escaped us. You did not. You and the rest of his spies are being rounded up in the Embassy. And brought here.” He said, moving into view. Floating behind him was a small glass jar with something moving in it.
“Why?” she asked, trying to pull at the restraints.
Samuel smiled. “Why?” He gave a small laugh, “Why, to gain information is all.”
Makka let out a harsh laugh, “You think you can make me talk? I was trained by Saheed himself. No amount of torture will break me.”
He moved closer and gave a small giggle. The jar moved closer as well. She saw something inside wiggling and stretching towards her. “Oh no, my dear. You aren’t going to be broken and tortured. That is entirely against what the Khal stand for.”
“The Khal? That is a myth.”
The jar’s top spun off, the jar hovering closer and closer to Makka. “That is what we all wanted you to think. The Khal have been in hiding. But, now we have returned. And you shall join us.”
The slug creature slipped and struggled up the jar. The glass jar itself moved closer and closer to Makka. She tried to pull back, impossible with the restraints on her. “Struggling will only cause more pain,” Samuel said with a sigh. “I would hate for you to go through such pain.”
The black slug stretched out and the jar tipped forward allowing the slug to reach her face. She felt the cold slimy thing sliding along her cheek. She tried not to scream, don’t break, don’t break, don’t scream. But when it slid away from her cheek, up towards an ear, she couldn’t help it.
Makka let out a primal scream when the pain slammed into her. Then, it was silenced by peace.
