Jemimah's Genie

  “I heard you.”

She looked down and began to laugh and cry at the same time. “Brian!” His blue eyes were open, droopy but open. He moved his head slightly.

“Thirsty,” he said. “Nurse, could you…”

Jemi grew rigid, her jubilation brought to a screeching halt. He didn’t know her. And why would he? He’d been in a coma. How could he possibly know her?

She gathered her wits and grabbed the jug of water and poured him a glass with shaking hands. “Here,” she said, lifting his head gently, “I’d better help you.”

He sipped gratefully, then lay back on the pillow, obviously exhausted.

“We were worried about you, Bri—Mr. Jordan,” Jemi said, trying desperately to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. “You’ve been unconscious for three weeks.”

He frowned as if trying to digest this. “Three weeks,” he repeated. Then he closed his eyes and Jemi put the water jug back and turned to go. She’d have to inform Dr. Forbes.

“They were the best three weeks of my life, Jem,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “Come kiss me. I have the worst headache.”

Jemimah’s heart was pounding so hard she felt it would burst. She gave a small cry of joy, then went to him and kissed his forehead, his cheeks, his eyes, his nose. And when her lips found his and his hand came up to pull her closer, she knew for certain he remembered everything.
