Falling From Grace

I shook my head, leaning forward and placing a kiss on his sharp cheekbone. “It would feel like a lie. I need to find myself. The place in this world where I belong. You have The Assembly. Pearl does, too. Gabriella has a new bistro she’s concentrating on. Geo has the stock market. Alex has his travelling and interest in culture, as well as traipsing along behind Ryan and his fashion stuff.” I’d stopped, taking a deep breath before my admission. “I have nothing outside of my love for you and my friendships with all of these busy people.”
His lips had pursed. He knew I was right.
Bartholomew’s eyes crinkled as he gazed at me across the reception room filled with friends and acquaintances. I cringed, noticing that everyone present stared at me.
“As you all know, we’re here to celebrate Teagan’s appointment in The Irish Assembly.” The room erupted into applause.
My shoulders raised and head bowed shyly as I batted away the notion of Bartholomew pulling strings when I received the letter from Dublin praising my work at eradicating Catherine and her clan, then insisting I joined them. He’d maintained he had nothing to do with it. Bartholomew had previously tried to appoint me in The English Assembly, but I refused. I had to discover what I wanted to do. Not merely copy him.
Bartholomew gently knocked the fork against the glass once more, commanding a hush back over the room. “However, I have one more thing to do.”
I watched his throat bob up and down with a hard swallow before flashing across the room to stand in front of me. Before I could even blink, I noticed he wasn’t standing. He kneeled.
“The last time I asked you, I thought I meant it.” He shook his head. “It’s different now. We are all different.”
My heart pounded as I looked into his glistening, green eyes, my heart bursting with an undeniable love. We had evolved, and I was ready.
“Will you marry me, Teagan?”
“Yes. Yes.”
Clapping deafened me, though I barely noticed as he snatched my small body into his huge arms. “I love you,” I told him, and I meant it.
The End.
