Temptation Calls

“If it’s not Sloan, it’ll be someone else. Something else,” she said.

“We can handle it together, Samantha. You don’t have to be alone anymore.” He cradled her head in his hands and gently urged her face up so that she couldn’t avoid him. “I don’t want to be alone anymore.”

“I can’t give you anything you want. No kids—”

“Last time I looked, there were a few at the shelter.”

“What about what happened last night?” she countered, hoping it had been as scary for him as it had been for her. She’d been at the point of turning him and if it hadn’t been for his strength in questioning her, she would have.

  “You stopped.”

  “This time.”

He leaned his forehead against hers and said, “You’re trying to make this harder than it has to be.”

He didn’t give her a chance to respond, stealing away any protest with his kiss.

“Peter, you don’t know what you’re saying,” she argued when she was able to draw a breath.

“But I do,” he whispered against her lips. “And if you’re willing to try, I promise there won’t be a day that goes by that you won’t feel this way.”

Samantha could battle a lot of things, but not a promise like that. There was no denying the way he made her feel. Happy. Hopeful. Human. Alive.

After over a century without such emotions, she was willing to accept his promise and, in exchange, give him one of her own. “I swear that there won’t be a day that goes by without my loving you. Without holding you to your promise.”

He smiled and pressed his body against hers. “Will you hold me to it soon?”

  “Is now too soon?”

He picked her up in his arms, and she pointed him in the direction of the spare bedroom.

It was never too soon to get started with the rest of your life.
