‘Do you remember the first time you were ever on this road Gemma?’
‘Why yes of course I do, it was when I first came to Texas and...Oh.’
‘It was the first time we ever met. Gemma, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you,’ he lifts one arm from the bonnet and pushes a hand into his back jean pocket.
He can’t be. What if he is? What if he’s about to do what I think, what I hope, what I wish he would do? No, he couldn’t be, better not get my hopes up.
‘From the first moment I saw you, Gemma Jones, I knew you were the one for me.’ His hand reappears holding a little black box.’ Maybe you weren’t so sure at first but…’
I was. I was so sure.
‘…I was, and I’m glad that you’ve come to realise it too,’ he flicks the lid of the box open and I gasp to catch my breath.
Oh my, oh my, oh my.
‘Gemma Jones, would you please agree to do me the honour of becoming my wife?’
My eyes focus on the small ring of gold, attached to sparkling, diamond on a little velvet cushion inside.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!
My mind screams, but my mouth doesn’t speak as I fight myself to get out the words.
‘Gemma?’ Jacob’s lips curl at the edges and his dimples begin to show.
‘Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes and more.’ At last the words come out, and I throw myself towards him, wrapping my legs around his waist and plastering a hundred kisses all over his beautiful face. ‘Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes,’ I repeat for good measure
‘So I take it that’s a yes then.’
‘It most definitely is a yes; the most definite yes there ever was in fact.’
‘Gemma I’m so glad,’ he kisses me and pulls me from the bonnet spinning me around.
‘We’re getting married, Jacob we’re getting married, getting married to each other.’
‘That we are darling!’
‘Woo hoo, we’re getting married!’ I yell at the top my voice, as I pull the cowboy hat from his head and throw it up into the air while he twirls me around again.
‘Well, the soon-to-be no longer miss Jones; and soon to be Mrs Callaway. We’d better get you home, as it seems you have a wedding to plan.’
‘I have, I do have a wedding to plan. But not so fast Mister. You and I have some unfinished business back in that barn first. You made a promise, remember?’ I smile as I bite down on my lower lip.
