The faces of those around her softened as she spoke. The tension in the air slowly receded.
“I’ll stand with her!” Heather yelled out, shrugging Claire’s hand, gripping her shoulder fiercely, away. “What she’s saying is true. If anyone understands what’s important to us now, it’s her. She may not be like us, but she is forever bound to us. I’ll accept her as my Queen.”
“I’ll accept her,” another voice called out.
“I’ll accept her,” another, and another, and another. The words filled the room, coming from both Alex’s and Charles’ group.
There was no fight to be had anymore. Alex was left without supporters. His wife and he stood, fear in their eyes and panic on their faces. They knew they were beaten.
CHAPTER TEN
No one had ever imagined that a mortal would be the one to unite the Clan once again. It was her courage and her stand that allowed them to accept her, and to once again put their trust in their King.
Still, she felt that if she were to be their Queen, she needed to be one of them. She wanted to be one of them. Charles refused to turn her during the pregnancy, however. No one knew how it would affect her or the baby.
But, a year later, after the baby was born, and Rebecca had been integrated completely into the Clan, the time had finally come. The nerves that filled her were pure excitement. She had no reservations about her decision. Her life was with him—with his people.
“Are you ready?” Charles asked. They were locked away, alone in their room. Their son was being taken care of by one of the servants, and the Clan was eagerly waiting to greet her as one of their own.
She lay in the bed, looking up at him, and feeling like there was no one else in the entire world in that very moment. “Yes,” she said with a nod.
Leaning in, Charles let his fangs sink into the soft flesh of her neck. The sensation was painful at first. She felt the life being drained out of her. Her heart slowed, and the room went dark.
But then, as if being awoken from a deep sleep, she felt her body surge with energy. Gasping quickly for air, she sat up, the sensation of power consuming her. Charles pushed himself off the bed and smiled down at her.
“How do you feel?” he asked.
“I can’t describe it,” she said. Kicking her feet off the side of the bed, she lifted herself up. She felt like she was floating, like every movement she made was graceful and fluid. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror across the room.
She looked the same, more or less. She had the same red hair and her figure was still voluptuous and curvy. But her eyes were different; they seemed to sparkle.
“Should we present you to the Clan?” Charles asked, motioning towards the door.
Her body buzzed with nerves. They descended the stairs to the large sitting room, where the majority of the Clan was awaiting them. They were her people, now. She was one of them—completely.
The future ahead was still unknown. They would continue working on the project in the lab. They still hoped that one day they would be able to come out of hiding. Until that time, however, she was happy to know that she had everything she could ever need right there. She had the man she loved, and a son to raise. She knew that the rest of her life that now stretched endlessly out in front of her would undoubtedly be happy.
