Alex whirled in the direction of the voices. For a moment, Brooke thought she was going to tear after them, so quickly did she flash to loathing and anger. But then, she turned to Brooke with a pleading look.
Alex didn’t have to say it. She knew she had to go. Race away before they got her. Go to be the living legend in this fearful town. To be the perpetual outsider they needed. The one they could hate. The one they had to hunt.
Brooke looked down at her body, cradled by Bryce, embraced by Maryanne as she rose in the night sky. She looked at Alex standing there. “We’ll get you back,” Alex sobbed.
Maryanne cried, “We swear it.”
“I know,” she whispered, but only the darkness heard her. Only the darkness could.
Brooke soared high into the sky, away from the mountain.
Alone.
She fled into the Mansbridge night as her sisters cried, the Walker cried, and the hunters hunted.
The wind swept wildly around her.
