Looking at her now, I made an oath.
If she made it through this, there would be no more fighting, no more denying the truth. She needed protecting now more than ever, and we would be that protection.
If she made it through this, I’d accept her as my woman.
“Foolish, woman. Saving me when I gave you the most grief.” I shook my head. “I don’t deserve you, Little Spy. But fuck, I will make it up to you.” I watched her breathing, her delicate torso rising and falling in a slow, uneasy rhythm.
For the first time in my life, I felt helpless.
“You have to get better, Setora. You’re the Property of the Four. You belong to the Dark Legion. As your General, I demand it. You hear that? That’s right. I’ll make you get better. I’ll sit here every damn second until you wake up. I got all the time in the world.”
I fell silent, closed her hand in mine, and waited.
Waited for my woman, my Setora—my savior—to open her eyes.
