“Callum,” Merry said, leaning over me. Tears were in her eyes. “Hold on,” he said. “They’re going to heal you. Just please hold on.”
I wanted to. More than anything, I wanted to stay here and make everything okay. I could feel the temporary pull of death settling over me though. Pearl and my mother were on top of me now, healing my body. It was too late though. I felt myself drift off…only I wasn’t gone.
I lay there, unable to control my body, unable to do anything. I felt the coldness I had felt back in the Nexus when that thing brushed past me. I felt the same terror in my heart, in my soul. It was here again. It was in my body, but so was I. How could that be?
My memory flashed back to Roy Morgan, to the spell he placed on me to keep my soul in place. Oh no. I was stuck here, stuck in this body with this thing.
And I had no control over myself at all.
“It’s alright,” I heard myself say, though I didn’t will those words. The thing did, the thing inside of me. “I’m okay.”
“Merry?” Andy said, looking over at her. “Is it?”
“He’s got the scar,” Merry said, smiling at me and touching my face where my mark was, though I didn’t feel it. “It’s definitely him. We fixed it. It’s over.”
Oh God. My soul was still in here and, since the mark was branded to my soul, it was still here. Merry thought it was me. They all did.
“I told you,” the thing inside of me said, standing and looking over the people I loved with prying eyes. He could kill them all in an instant and I was powerless to stop them. So why wasn’t he? “We’re almost finished. There’s just one more thing we need to do, and then we can be done with all of this forever.”
The thing turned my eyes to Amber.
“Come on,” he said, smiling a sickly smile and sending a shiver of cold dread through my helpless soul. “We’ve got work to do.”
