Serpents of the Abyss (The Darvel Exploratory Systems #2)

His tail jerked around, his secondary cock pushing in mercilessly with his primary, filling her to the point that one orgasm tipped into another as he ground deep, and locked into her. The pace was savage but when he came it was with a wide arch of his wings before they snapped down closed around and brutal snarl that careened into a sweet song as his cock twitched and released its hot seed within her.

Her body was still wound tight, her heart pounding when Kehtal took Daskh’s place between her thighs. He stroked her folds lightly, lovingly, his eyes gleaming down at her, observing her every reaction as he patiently worked her until he teased down a pleasant release that rushed through her limbs and belly.

He dragged his cheek against her breasts, neck and jaw, drawing her scent in eagerly with every brush of his mouth. She sighed, leaning into his gentle touch. A nip of his teeth showed a hint of cruelty and hardness within him, but the sting of his teeth was chased away by another tender touch as he played her body in a way that was surprising. It was as if he were intimate with every part of her, even though he hadn’t so much as touched her during their isolation together, leaving all the touching to her. She wondered how many times he fantasized about this very moment to be eagerly committing every plane and curve of her body to his memory.

His nose nuzzled a spot just above her ear, his breath warm against her flesh.

“Do you accept me as your mate?” he whispered.

A shiver stole over her, a breath escaping her with a sigh. “Yes.”

His mouth brushed along the line of her jaw until he reached her lips. He nipped her bottom lip, making her gasp before his cock slid in. Unlike Slengral’s sweet caresses and Daskh’s domination, Kehtal teased and playing, flicking his tongue against hers as she attempted to chase it. By the time he lifted his head, she was panting, her head thrown back against Slengral’s stomach, her mate staring down at her with amusement. Another touch from the male between her legs, this time on her slick folds, wrenched her attention from Slengral to stare down at her newest mate, his citrine eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

Mouthing her breasts, his tongue teasing her nipples, Kehtal lined himself up at her folds and pressed home. He didn’t so much as invade but slipped in with that constant, light pressure. It was as if he were in no hurry as he leisurely enjoyed her. The shift between gentle and sweet to hard and sharp left her gasping and excited, never knowing what sensations his next touch would bring. As his need heightened, his leisurely strokes broke into a wild rut, not so much the sort of plowing that Daskh gave her, but like a storm stirring within her as he plunged with quick, hard flexes of his hips. Even when he swelled inside of her, he rocked his hips in an insane rhythm that stole her breath. He pushed her to an edge of need that had her so eager that when his tail finally twisted around her so his secondary cock could join the first, Lori lifted her hips eagerly, needing that last pinch of pleasure-pain.

She rode out the exquisite feeling of his body driving against hers as his wings folded around her tight. An arc of sensual fire lit through her and then another, but it was only when he bellowed and released his seed that she tumbled right after him.

In the aftermath of their passion, she lay there panting, her newest mates curled around her, the hands petting her, sliding over her belly. She almost didn’t notice when Slengral shifted and moved out from behind her except that she missed her pillow.

Her head falling back, she frowned at him until he settled himself between her legs, his wings fanning wide. The smile he gave her was full of love.

“My turn,” he hissed, and he brushed his mouth and nose across her belly. “Now I am going to make you fly, ashlava.”

When she eventually came apart beneath his touch, all she could think was, boy did he ever.

  Epilogue

Lori stood surrounded by her mates as she watched Eddie purse his lips, scanning the datapad in front of him. The first transport train to the mines had left that morning, the very first shift since Darvel and United Earth pulled out, and everyone, especially Eddie, was nervous. Although there had been no hostility from the shinara, the miners were still going in and prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice if their Seshanamitesh guards instructed them to.

Over the course of the last few months, despite some squabbles, the species had slowly learned to cooperate with each other, which was the only reason that they had even entertained opening access to the mine again. Corp had already begun negotiations offering fair trade credit through a third party employed by the coalition for any material dug up by the colony. She had initially been surprised by the offer and suspicious, but Eddie had laughed and pointed out that they were only eager to cooperate because they needed the ore.

It was nice to be in a position of power for once.

A smiled curled the corners of Eddie’s mouth, and he nodded to himself. Not for the first time, they lingered on her males as if he still couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact that she was mated to three males. All three of whom possessively guarded her from any other unmated male with a pulse, and were currently glaring daggers at him.

  And they liked Eddie.

For whatever reason, that didn’t comfort him much.

Vi, on the other hand, found the entire thing amusing. She was less amused by her own personal stalker who was “ruining her nightlife” by running off every male she attempted to flirt with, which was probably why she was hanging out with them in the office instead of getting ready to go out.

“Any trouble?” Lori asked conversationally, her hand settling over her small baby bump.

The corners of Eddie’s eyes crinkled, and he shook his head, letting out a deep breath. “Nope. Looks to be all clear. They have a team working to take apart the excavator, and the Seshanamitesh are working one per assigned team to keep things safe. By all accounts, our productivity should be high despite the restrictions we are now using to lessen our impacts on the Aglatha.”

Slengral nodded. “Good,” he hissed. “As long as Seshana’s integrity is preserved, the Seshanamitesh will have no reason to attack.”

Lori was just grateful that they no longer had to deal with attacks from rogue groups. It happened only a few more times before word spread that Seshanamitesh were now residing at Raza. A few of those initial conflicts had caused mass upset and panic due to how savage they sounded, but it had gotten results that no one could argue against. Equipping everyone in the colony with translators, including the Seshanamitesh, helped a lot of that progress, since everyone showed a higher likelihood of trusting each other and a willingness to work together.

In the end, it got results, and everyone liked results. They were just now seeing the fruit of them with the reopening of the mine.

Eddie rubbed his fingers across his mouth. “Corp will be sending a shuttle in about two months’ time to collect what harvest we have. They are also inquiring about your pregnancy. What would you like me to tell them?”

“Ideally, that it’s none of their damn business.” She sighed. “But in the spirit of cooperation, let’s just say that everything is normal. Whatever that is. I’m pregnant and dealing with all the typical pregnant lady stuff,” she clarified.

“Better you than me,” Vi grinned. “Not that I plan to get knocked up by anyone. No offense to your serpents. Give me an old fashioned human who I can still imagine being with after a few months and then maybe I will reconsider the kids and picket fence,” she said, a lazy grin stretching across her face.

Lori shrugged. “All of my symptoms are typical of any human pairing, so I can’t imagine the experience changing that drastically with a human partner,” she teased.

Morning sickness, swelling, indigestion. She had it all. And worse, as far as the medics who recently relocated planetside under an ironclad nondisclosure agreement could tell, there was no way to predict just how long her baby would be cooking. About the only useful thing that they could tell her was that she was carrying it as a fetus rather than an egg forming inside of her.
Good thing too, because the idea of birthing an egg gave her nightmares. Her mates, however, found the idea of a livebirth to be something caught between fascinating and horrifying.

The medics were the ones really excited, and that made her mates all the more suspicious, especially Kehtal, whose experience at the hands of the last ones employed at the colony didn’t make him trusting of those of their profession.

Unfortunately, being the first woman carrying a Seshanamitesh hybrid meant that she was going to regular visits. Kehtal set aside his dislike enough to remain by her side, often growling as he scrutinized the medic’s every move.

Lori yawned and rubbed her belly. “You’ll give me an update if you hear anything more from the mining crew?”

Despite being trained as a spa attendant, Eddie had soon discovered that she had an aptitude keeping logs and working the ledger programs that earned her an immediate promotion. With this being the first day out on site, she wanted to make sure she had a clear count for everything coming out of the ground, what the comparative quantities were, if any injuries sustained, and so on. She hated not being there to see the initial reports, but she was already tired, and her mates were looking at her in a way that suggested that they were prepared to haul her back to their nest if she didn’t go willingly on her own two legs.

Eddie nodded. “Get out of here. I need to talk to Vi about a new construction project she’s been wheedling me about anyway.”

Lori sighed gratefully but didn’t get more than a step before Daskh hauled her up off of her feet.

“Come. It is sleep time,” he rumbled with a suggestive, panty-wetting hum.

Lori’s cheeks heated as her males hummed softly around her, letting everyone in the room know exactly how they would be resting. Once they understood that mating didn’t hurt the baby, they were insatiable and didn’t know the meaning of quiet sex.

To her further embarrassment, Vi caught her eye, her grin growing wicked as she mouthed two words. “Have fun.”

Little did her friend know that her males were very much committed to that and more.

Book 2: Serpents of the Night

Lori is the first human on Seshana to be pregnant with hybrid offspring and negotiating this unfamiliar terrain is daunting enough without the added complications that come with the colony attempting to separate from United Earth’s control, and the uncertain silence coming from the shinara. While Darvel works to negotiate terms with the employees they left behind to keep the mines running, their fate is still uncertain with the noble council of the shinara barely tolerating the existence of the humans remaining in the colony. If word gets out about a hybrid preparing to be born, it could throw everything the colony has been working hard for into chaos

Peace needs to be achieved, and while she is trying to juggle the dynamics of her new family, Lori feels like the least qualified person to assist with that. While Slengral’s trouble with possessiveness threatens to tear the family apart, Lori finds herself thrust into the middle of a brewing conflict with the shinara when her mate is summoned to answer for his crime against Vekatha. With the risk of her mate being split from his family for good, can Lori and her mates discover peace with the shinara and each other through discovering the tie that binds their family together.

  Author’s Note

Thank you so much for returning to Seshana with me. This has been over a year in coming since so many people requested to see the original short story Serpent of the Abyss expanded, and I truly appreciate everyone’s patience during that time while Lori’s story had time to grow and develop.

Like with the short story, this originally started out as a m/f romance but with the nurturing bonds between herself and the other two males, and the hostile world surrounding them, it ended up growing into a reverse harem. This was unplanned and an unfortunate result was that there just simply wasn’t anyway to wrap up their story in a single novel that satisfied me. By the time Lori was rescued and joined with her mates the book was already quite long and we hadn’t even started to touch on the issue with the shinara, the reception of her pregnancy among his kind, or the conflict with Vekatha, because you know she’s not just going to let that rest. It is for this reason that Lori and her mates will be getting a second book in Serpents of the Night. This is entirely out of norm for what I planned for this series which was supposed to be a different planet for each book, but it needs to be done. Even more out of habit, next year I will be concluding Seshana’s story with Vi and Ehsash and a mystery male yet to be named.

What is else is coming for Darvel?

December I will be putting out a holiday novella! In both this book and Classified Planet: Turongal I mentioned a particularly pleasure-loving species, the Aturians. The Aturians have been exploited heavily in their relationship with United Earth, especially during the midwinter festivals. When a non-gratas assigned to a work detail on their planet falls into the hands of a bitter male, it will take some holiday magic for them to find their happily ever after.

As always if you enjoyed this book and want to read more from the Darvel series, please leave a review. Reviews are love. Thank you!
