The doorbell rings and I jolt into action. Fuck. I so don’t want to do this, but I’ll have to. I make my way to the door, Wilder staying a little behind me. I wish I could hold him close, but that’s not our positions right now. This is my house, this is the family I have to deal with. When I open the door, two very official looking people stare at me and I don’t like their look.
“Yes?” I try to put on my strongest voice.
“We are here regarding concerns about the safety of an underage child, Madeline?” One of the two looks at his notes.
“That’s my daughter.” My heart’s beating like crazy and I’m feeling a little faint. What’s going on?
“We are here to bring her under her grandparents’ care where she will be kept safe and where she will live in a stable environment.”
“Safe?” I’m not sure I’m understanding this. “But she’s fine.”
“Did you not lose your husband just recently?”
“Yes.” What does that have anything to do with this?
“And are you not living with an unknown Alpha you only just met?”
I look at Wilder, and I think I must look the same as him. Panicked, scared and white as a sheet. “Yes, but my Alpha left half the house to him. He’s here to help out. You can’t take my daughter from me.” They can’t. Can they?
“We’re just bringing her to a more stable environment where she’ll have two people who are both related to her to look after her. Just until you’ve got yourself back into a good situation.” I can read the look in the man’s eyes. I’m a slut. A sleaze. I sleep around and don’t care enough about my daughter.
When I look past them to Logan’s parents, they look smug. There is no other way to describe it. They’ve found the one way that will hurt everyone the most. “Please. Don’t do this to me. I love my daughter. I love Maddy.”
But they stay quiet and other people stand between us, guarding them from my view.
I can’t believe this. My knees buckle under me, but then Wilder’s hand is on my back, supporting me.
“Will it be better if I leave?” His voice is tense and I can’t believe what he’s saying. Him? Leaving?
“And who are you?” One of the men looks at him like he’s some sort of dirt he found under his shoe.
“I’m the one who Logan left half this house to, and who he appointed to look after his family.” Wilder’s voice is strong, but I can hear the tension.
“Logan’s parents have not received any such request from their son. So, by law, they are the ones who will be taking custody of the child in question. Now, if you’ll excuse us.” He pushes past us, walking into the hallway. “Where is Madeline?”
“No. Wait.” I can’t just have them storm into her room. “Let me get her. Please.”
“We don’t want to upset the child. But she will have to come with us. She needs a bag with clothes and some toys. Also, anything else she may need for school or other activities. One of us will help you out.” The man points to the only Omega in this whole group, not counting Logan’s mother. “You help him out.”
I shake as I walk to the stairs, going up the stairs and Maddy is already looking out her door as I see her. “Hi, sweetie. I’m going to pack a bag for you and you’re going to stay with your grandparents for a while. Isn’t that fun? You’ve never done that before. A new adventure.” I try to keep my voice upbeat, but even Maddy won’t fall for it. She never stays at her grandparents, for good reasons. One, her grandparents have no interest in her, and two, we didn’t want her to be influenced by their archaic ideas.
“Daddy? What’s going on?” Her voice wavers and I take her into my arms, almost crying myself, but I have to stay strong.
“It will be fine. It’s just for a little while.”
“Why?”
That’s the best question. Why would they do that? “Just until we clear some things up.” I carefully let her go and grab a bag, starting to put clothes in it. “Can you put your favourite toys in your own bag?”
Maddy nods, quiet, and I know she’s on the verge of tears. I can’t explain it to her, I can’t say why this is happening, because she wouldn’t get it. I don’t even get it. I don’t get how they could do something this evil.
The Omega stays in the doorway, looking at us.
When I’ve packed the bag with clothes, I put in some of her favourite books, at least ones she can read herself. But as I try to close the bag, my fingers fiddle and it drops onto the floor with a loud noise.
“Daddy.” Maddy is over to me immediately, wrapping her tiny arms around me.
Tears cloud my view, but it’s not enough to disguise the look of disgust on the Omega’s face. I can’t do this. I can’t do this. I can’t just give my daughter away to these people. I take Maddy in my arms.
“I’m so sorry, sweetie. You’ll be back here as soon as we fix this.” I kiss the side of her head, keeping her close as she’s also crying. How heartless can you be to do this? To split a child from their only living parent?
“Oh. Grow up.” The Omega moves, taking Maddy’s bags in one hand and with the other hand he starts pulling on Maddy’s arm. “Come along. We’ve waited long enough.”
“No, please.” Don’t do this. Please.
But he keeps tugging, and I have to let Maddy go, or she’d get hurt. Even more hurt.
“Daddy.” Maddy cries out, but the Omega pulls her along to the stairs. I follow them, I can’t let her out of my view. When he’s at the stairs one of the other people is there and picks up Maddy, carrying her down the stairs.
Maddy! A sound escapes me and I see the Omega take one look at me before he follows them. How could he? How could he actively help to take a child from their father? Why? I haven’t done anything wrong. Maddy hasn’t done anything wrong. None of us have done anything wrong. Why are we the ones being punished?
I hear sounds of a scuffle downstairs and Maddy crying out for Wilder. I’m not sure where I find the energy, but I somehow make it down the stairs.
Two Alphas are holding Wilder, pushing him back against the wall. The guy that originally talked to me is standing nearby, a red mark on his face. Wilder hit him.
The Alpha looks at me. “You’ll hear from us. I hope they never give you custody over your daughter again. It’s not safe here.” And then he walks out, the Omega with Maddy is already outside and the other two Alphas follow him quickly.
I make my way to the door, standing on the step and the only thing I can do is watch how they’re taking away my daughter. My daughter who is crying out for me and Wilder. My beautiful daughter who has no idea what’s going on. Why she’s not allowed to live with her own daddy.
Wilder’s arms around me are strong, holding me up, keeping me together a little before I really break down.
Then I realise what he’s doing. “Wild... This is not a good idea.” Him holding me like this, in front of all these people.
“I don’t care.” His voice is broken too and I’m sure I hear tears in it. “There is nothing else they can hurt us with. This is already the lowest of the lowest. I can’t watch you fall and not do anything.”
The cars start and one by one they drive off, in the reverse order that they got here, first Logan’s parents, and then the rest of them.
My breath starts coming out in short bursts and I really feel faint right now. I can’t do this. I can’t do this anymore.
“Shhh. Shhh. Keep breathing.” Wilder turns me so I face him. “Come on, deep breaths. I don’t want you to faint on me. Please.” He looks... horrible. Deep lines in his face, his eyes filled with tears.
He pulls us back a little and closes the door. Then he slowly slides us both to the floor.
It’s only then that I fully break down, having been able to keep myself somewhat together before. I can’t believe this just happened. I can’t believe they took Maddy. I can’t believe how much they want to hurt me, Wilder and even Logan. Going directly against Logan’s wishes, just to hurt someone else.
