  When she was still, and they held each other’s eyes for too long a moment he kissed her. His lips came to hers and she kissed him. Her lips were tight and stiff and closed but he pressed his to hers and she twisted her face up in remorse but she didn’t pull away. He let her go then, stepped back and looked her up and down. Then he left. Opened the door, stepped out to their brick stoop and walked down the manicured walkway that Pete had snipped with shears just this last Saturday morning. They were beginning to bud. She watched him walk all the way out to their driveway, out onto the cul-de-sac and get into a lifted pickup truck parked in front of their house. It started up with a mechanical rumble, exhaust shaking and clattering. She thought he might hammer out of here, squeal and roar, but he put it in gear and the truck eased itself out to the stop sign at the end of the street, signaled then turned left. She closed the door and she got down on her knees and she cried.
