“But Noble, you are a hero!” Prince William exclaimed. Dominique and her mother agreed, clapping their hands and cheering for the young knight.

Noble laughed. “No, no hero am I—but here is one!” He reached down and picked up Hero who was sleeping at his feet. “He tried to protect Granny, as small as he is, and was injured in the attempt. Then despite his hurts, he followed the trail of the Dark Knight and led me to Granny in the cave. He led me once again in the fire and the smoke to find you, William, and the others, and to rescue you.”

Hero reached up and licked Noble’s chin. “Forgive me, Your Majesty. I am sorry to tell you, you were wrong!” he chuckled. “This is no lapdog, no soft piece of fluff! Greater than your finest greyhound or mastiff—the best hunting dog in the kingdom is our little Hero, for he hunted down the Dark Knight and caught him! He has lived up to his name, just as I said he would—Hero! You cannot judge a hero by his size or might, it would seem.”

King Stephen looked at the young knight standing before him and said with a smile, “No, you are quite right, Sir Noble. You certainly cannot.”

Noble kissed his dog on the nose and ruffled his fur. He bent over to set the pup down on the floor and suddenly groaned. Oh no! The little hero had piddled on his boot once again!
