"Best not to forget that."
"And just how do you plan to get your daughter to—well—cooperate?"
"She won't. Willingly. But, she does think she's intelligent enough to outsmart me, and that will be her downfall."
"Sometimes, daughters can surprise you."
"You are not wrong, KarNavan. You are not wrong. However, my daughter's greatest weakness is that she doesn't like others to get hurt. And she thinks she can stop me. She will try. And when she does—" he gave a reviling nod.
"Forgive me if I overstep here, but as I said, sometimes, daughters can surprise you. If your daughter is anything like you—" he let that hang in the air.
"She has no chance." It was firmly stated.
KarNavan nodded that he understood.
"Ah. Here's what I'm looking for. You'll do just fine," he mumbled greedily. He reached out and grabbed a jar. "Yes, this should do the deed. Hold this." He passed the jar to KarNavan and ambled toward the exit. "And be careful with that. There's enough magic in there to blow us all into the next century, and I'm not in a hurry to get there, yet."
It was an arduous climb up the stairs. Fazendiin still moving painfully, awkwardly, and pathetically slowly. It was long past the timer he'd given everyone else. No one called him on it. Only waited, in silent fascination.
He led his army into a great hall. It was like stepping back in time or into some grand ballroom. In the center was a marble dais, in which he had KarNavan set the jar.
"I suggest you all take firm stances." It was his only warning and explanation. A crystal-like stem began to rise out of the center of the dais. Fazendiin uncorked the magic-filled jar and placed the entire jar inside the stem. He held his palm over it, and using magic, made a tiny cut on his palm. His blood was required to activate the stored magic.
He began to chant, almost trance-like. And a moment later the ground underneath them began to tremble and shake. A ringing vibration almost brought them to their knees—they had been warned.
The walls, floors, fixtures—croaked and moaned almost like—they were moving.
Fazendiin's chanting grew louder and stronger. His gaze intent and focused. And almost as soon as it had started, it ended. The creaking and moaning stopped. The vibrations under their feet, ebbed. Everything around them, settled.
Fazendiin leaned against the dais for a moment, looking ragged. KarNavan knew better than to point it out, or question, or even offer assistance. He motioned for his army to follow him outside. At first glance, nothing had changed. The estate looked the same. The familiar stately grounds and gardens. But outside the estate—KarNavan's jaw fell open, near as deep as the gate was wide.
The main house had felt like it was moving, because it had moved!
The Grosvenor had moved an entire estate! Which made sense seeing as where it had been, was clearly not its original location, however—if they'd been under the impression the Grosvenor wielded great power—well, this was far beyond what KarNavan had ever imagined. He'd picked the right side for his people. If his daughter did not come through and their Plan B failed, perhaps this would not be so bad.
Unless— the mere thought of it gave his heart a little squeezing tingle of excitement. If his daughter was right? If there was a way to take the Grosvenor out of power, keep their immortality, and all this power too? It was enough to brighten anyone's mood.
Except for maybe the Svoda, or any other magical being in existence.
An ominous shape slid up alongside him as the rest of the army fanned out when Ardon started barking orders.
KarNavan glanced sideways at his King. "Hell of a show, My Lord."
"That is the point. Just let them try to take back their precious island now."
The estate was sitting smack dab in the center of the Svoda island. Its new centerpiece.
"Your orders, My Lord?"
"Prepare for war. I have a future to plan."
