“I was able to transfer sooner, a last-minute option.”
“Oh my God, I can’t believe you’re finally here,” Melonie nearly cried, she was so happy to see him.
“I’ve missed you too. So much.”
***
Melonie woke to find Matt sitting on the chair he’d occupied the first time she ever got her hands on him. He was watching her.
“Hey,” she softly greeted him.
“Hey, yourself.”
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Watching you.”
“Oh?”
“And thinking.”
“About what?”
“How I got so lucky.”
“Come over here, and I’ll show you how much luckier you could get,” she responded with a grin.
“I will. After,” he responded as he came to sit on the bed next to her.
“After what?” she asked.
He didn’t answer her. Instead, he reached out to brush her hair with his fingers, away from her face. He tucked her hair behind her ear before his other hand reached for something on the nightstand. He turned the lamp on before picking up a small, black box she hadn’t noticed. She gasped.
“What is that?”
“Me getting really lucky,” he answered with a smile as he opened the jewel box. A diamond ring.
“Oh my God!” she gasped.
“I was going to do it tomorrow, after taking you out on a date but I sat here, watching you sleep, and I couldn’t wait. I wanted you to be mine from here on. So, Melonie Dawn Lovett, will you marry me?”
She cried as he kneeled next to her bed with the ring. She cried and nodded, unable to speak.
“Yes!” she finally answered. She held her hand out to him and with shaky hands, he slipped the engagement ring on her finger.
EPILOGUE
Two years later…
Melonie sighs as she felt Matt’s arms wrap around her ample waist from behind. No matter how long they’ve been together, she always felt like melting into a puddle when he touched her. Sometimes it only took a look from him to have her panting and moist for him. The past two years had been nothing but perfect. Their bed and breakfast had a very successful first season. So successful, they decided to keep it closed in the winter months rather than keep it open all year round. After a very hectic, tiring, and busy spring season, they decided to hire a young couple to help run the place. The summer and spring months were filled with endless guests. In just two years, the lives of her and her friends have changed drastically.
Melonie and Matt married just before the grand opening of their bed and breakfast which they named Clyde Valley Inn. They celebrated their wedding on the grounds of the bed and breakfast. It was a small, very intimate wedding because Melonie and Matt didn’t have any family besides their friends. A few of Matt’s friends from the military came, and for Melonie, she only had Ashley and Jenny along with their significant others. Ashley’s mother, Sandra, the only mother the three of them really had, was there.
Once Matt had officially retired from the Marines, Ashley and Jenny gave up the day to day work for the business. Ashley and Jenny preferred to be the silent partners, only filling in when necessary and doing the paperwork that needed to be done while Melonie took full control of the business. Ashley opened her business near downtown where she taught yoga and Pilates. Jenny, having a knack for running a business handled all the paper works for the bed and breakfast and Ashley’s business.
“I think it’s time for a rest, Mrs. Thornton,” Matt whispered in her ear after giving her a kiss on her neck.
“I think so too, my feet are killing me,” she replied. Being pregnant was a lot more work than she ever imagined.
“Damn it, Melonie. I told you to lay-”
“I’m fine, just tired. In two months, we’ll be even more tired,” Melonie cut Matt’s most likely overprotective scolding. She loved her husband, but he sometimes got overprotective of her. Not so much overbearing like her father had been, but with Matt, she knew it was from love and deep worry over her safety. In a couple of months, they'll start their new journey as parents, and she couldn't wait.
Sophia Peony
In 6th grade I wanted to be a singer. In high school I wanted to be a lawyer, an astronaut and then a house wife when I thought I was going to marry my high school sweetheart. Then I wanted to be a pilot but found out I was too short to fly. So, I decided to become a photographer. When that didn’t work out, I decided to be a writer.
