“We have men here who say they have been sent by their government.” He says into his phone. He nods his head as though listening to the person on the phone tell him what to do.
“Yes sir.” He says before putting the phone back in his pocket.
“Our chief is on his way to see you.” He says with a growl. The men take a step back. As would anyone. The man is huge and obviously annoyed with us. It’s only a few minutes before we hear another vehicle coming. A large black truck pulls up beside the red Tahoe. The man steps out of the truck and I suck in a deep breath. His hair is longer than the other mans, reaching his waste, like a long, black waterfall. He’s not as large as the other man, though, his presence seems to suck the oxygen out of the air. This is a man of considerable power and I can feel it as if it were tangible. Then his eyes meet mine and I feel like I am falling into those beautiful green depths. Again, it feels like he can see right through me only far more powerful. I feel drawn to him in a way that’s unexplainable.
He finally looks at each of the men as if weighing their intent and finding them lacking. I can’t blame him. These men are in this only for themselves. They want the prize they would receive for studying them. Nothing more. I want to study them because I am intrigued.
“She may stay. The rest of you must leave, now. You’re are not welcome here again. If you try to trespass on our private property again, you will be shot. You have been warned.” The chief says with absolute command to his voice. He is not to be trifled with. He turns to the large man.
“Help the woman get her belongings.” The chief says and the large man looks at him with a shocked expression before schooling his features. He comes over to me and I feel the breath catch in my lungs. He is even larger the closer he gets. He must be close to seven feet tall. I feel tiny and insignificant next to him.
“Which are your belongings?” He asks and I unglue my tongue from the roof of my mouth.
“The pink luggage and bag.” I tell him and he smirks.
“I should have known.” He says before open the back hatchback and pulling out my suitcase. I rush to the door I just got out of and grab my purse. He is already striding toward the chief. I do not even stop to spare the men I travelled with a glance as I make my way past them. The chief is staring at me with his jaw clenched and he seems so formidable. I want to run my fingers over his firm jaw but I fear it wouldn’t be welcome. He almost seems angry.
“Are you attached to any of those men?” He asks and I shake my head wearily at him.
“No.” I say and watch as his lip twitches in what could have been a start of a smile. He turns to the giant of a man.
“Put them in my truck. She will be staying with me.” He tells him and I am shocked. I would have thought he would dump me with a woman and ignore me during my stay. I guess I’m wrong.
“What is your name?” The chief asks me and I swallow hard before answering him.
“My name is Dr. Corrin Davies.” I tell him in a tremulous voice. I normally have more backbone then this. He is just so intimidating that I can’t contain some of the fear I’m feeling.
“What’s your name?” I ask with a little more assertiveness.
“I am Chief Mason. You may call me Mason.” He says and again his lip twitches slightly as though he wants to smile, but it doesn’t quite happen.
“Make sure they leave. Travis will be taking over for you in an hour.” Mason tells the hulking man who lays my luggage into the back of his chief’s truck.
“Yes sir.” He says as he goes back over to his own truck.
“Leave.” He calls to the other doctors in the group. I want to laugh at the others as they climb into their car, I do not though it’s a struggle. Mason leads me over to the truck and opens the passenger door. He lifts me by taking a hip in each of his strong hands and sits me in the seat. He leans in and pulls my seatbelt across me. He snaps it in place and stares into my eyes. From only a few inches away I can see the gold flecks within the green. He seems to struggle with something, but I’m unsure of what that is. He finally moves away from me and shuts my door. He goes around to the other side and climbs in.
He drives us in silence and I look around me as he pulls into a small village. The houses are all brick and look modern. I am shocked to see how well they are flourishing. They have a small store and a gas station. There is even a diner. It looks like any other town. I feel like such an idiot for thinking that they would live in teepees and live off the land. We are in a modern age and it’s not like they haven’t seen man made things. If they had been in the rainforest and never saw another human outside of themselves, it would be much different I am sure.
He pulls into a driveway of the largest of the houses. It’s much too large to belong to one man. I will probably be meeting his family. For some reason that’s very disappointing, yet I try not to think about why that is. A man who looks like the man we just left steps up to the vehicle.
“How did he get here before us?” I must have said it out loud as Mason chuckles.
“That is Travis, Tyler’s twin brother. They are the enforcers for our village.” He says and I store that away. Enforcers must be like police. They are probably the protectors of the tribe. They must be identical twins since I can’t seem to tell them apart. Maybe I will someday. Travis stops in his tracks when he sees me. He growls until Mason steps out of the truck.
“Be at ease. She is a guest here. Her name is Corrin and she will be staying with me.” He tells Travis. Travis turns and bends his head to the side, showing his neck.
“As you wish.” He says and Mason nods his head at him.
“Her luggage is in the back. Put her in the room next to mine.” Mason tell Travis who looks at his chief and you can see the puzzlement in his eyes. You can tell they are unused to outsiders and especially one staying in residence with their chief. Yippy, I’m the first, I think to myself in complete sarcasm. The big guy Travis pulls the luggage out and heads toward the house. Mason comes around as I open the door and helps me down from the large vehicle. Having his hands on me has a profound effect. My nipples tighten to peaks and a moisture leaks from my feminine folds on to my soft pink panties.
He takes a deep breath and growls. I yelp with worry as he brings his nose to my neck.
“Be at ease.” He says in my ear. I shiver as I feel his breath in my ear. I have never had this kind of visceral response to a man before. I was starting to think I was A-sexual and would never want a man. It wasn’t like I was attracted to women either. I just felt nothing for either sex. I didn’t let it upset me. I just worked harder on becoming the youngest woman to receive her PHD in anthropology. I studied other cultures and I loved it because in one way I belonged, I was different. I embraced it like I did everything else. This man changes everything for me. Apparently, my thing is big, Native American, growly men.
“Come, I will show you to your room. We are having a bonfire tonight and you are my guest.” He says as he takes my arm and steers me into the house and up a wide staircase. My mouth drops as I look around at the beautiful home. I never would have guessed at how beautiful it is. Large sky lights take up most of the vaulted ceiling. A large chandelier hangs from the center, draped in large crystals. At the top of the staircase he turns left and leads me down a long hallway. There are only three doors. One on the left side and two on the right.
He stops in front of the first door on the right. He opens it and I find myself in a large bedroom. The bed is large with a canopy hanging over the top of the four posts. The wood looks hand-carved and elegantly done. I walk over to it and run my hand over the carving in the headboard. It’s a depiction of a wolf with his mate and pups. It is so detailed that the wolves look real.
“This is beautiful.” I say as I continue to run my hand over the wood. Mason shivers as he watches and I wonder if I’m annoying him so I drop my hand.
“Unpack and get ready. I will come back for you in two hours.” He says gruffly before leaving the room and s
hutting the door behind him. I sit down on the bed and take a deep breath. This has been the strangest day and I know more is to come. I only hope that I can assimilate in to their culture.
