Webber asks me. “How does it feel? You’re going to be a full-fledged doctor now. Completely responsible for all your decisions.”

  She’s smiling at me.

“It doesn’t feel real to be honest,” I say. “I feel like I’m not ready.”

She laughs. “You’re definitely ready.” Then she leans in closer and lowers her voice. “I’ll tell you a secret. None of us thought we were ready. And in some cases, it was actually true. But in your case, you’re definitely ready.”

“Thank you,” I say. “That means a lot to me. And I just want to tell you that I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. I know I haven’t been the easiest student to work with but I feel like I’ve learned so much from you.”

  “Likewise,” Webber says.

Madison says, “Hey when you two get done gushing over each other there’s a laceration in room one with your name on it Jess.”

I roll my eyes at her. “Thanks, Madison. I’m going to miss you too.”

I walk into room one and pick up the chart. The patient is laying on the bed with his back to me. His back that’s covered by a leather jacket which says Rebel Storm in big red letters. I know that jacket and I know that back.

  “Dylan?”

He sits up and faces me when he hears my voice. His hand is wrapped in a bloody bandage and he’s grinning from ear to ear.

“Dylan? What the hell? Are you okay?”

He shrugs. “I think I’ll survive. The thing is, you work so damn much I decided I would just cut myself so that I can see you.”

  “That’s not funny. What happened?”

He’s still grinning, not saying anything.

  “What?”

“Nothing. You just look sexy in your doctor outfit.”

“Yeah?” I look over my shoulder to make sure nobody is listening. “Are you going to try to fuck me at the hospital again? You know this is my last day of residency, so there’s still a chance for you to get me kicked out.”

  “I would never.”

  We both laugh.

“Are you going to look at my hand or what?” he says. “What does it take to get some service around here?”

“If you don’t watch out, I’m going to order an enema. You still haven’t told me how you did this.”

I put on some gloves—but god knows I’m not afraid of getting his fluids on me—and start unwrapping his hand. “Who the hell wrapped this thing? There’s a whole roll of freaking bandages here.”

Dylan is still grinning. He’s hiding something.

I stop unwrapping. “What? What are you smiling about? This isn’t funny. Don’t think you’re going to get out of our dinner date tonight. I’ve been looking forward to it all week. I still can’t believe you actually asked me out on a real date.”

“Don’t worry, we’re going,” he says. “Just unwrap my damn hand please.”

I finally get the bandage off. “What’s in your hand?”

His hand is balled up into a fist, holding onto something.

“Dylan, I don’t have time for games. Please open you hand.”

Still smiling, he opens it. There’s a white box there.

“What is that? Dylan, what the hell is that?” My heart is racing. I know exactly what it is. “You’re not really cut are you?”

Dylan’s not smiling anymore. He has the serious look on his face that I don’t see much these days. He gets down on one knee in front of me and opens the box. There’s a ring inside.

A group of nurses have gathered around. God, it’s impossible to get any privacy around here.

Dylan’s voice is choking up as he starts to talk. “Jess, I love you. I think you’re beautiful. I think you make me a better person. I think we make an incredible team, and, if you’ll have me, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you please marry me?”

Tears are streaming down my face. I’m speechless. I had no idea this was coming. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted it, but I wasn’t sure what he thought.

“Oh my god,” is all I manage to say.

Dylan is still down on one knee, looking up at me. He’s waiting for something. My mind is like jello.

One of the nurses whispers, “Say yes.”

“Yes! Of course, yes! Get up.”

Dylan comes up to me and we kiss, right there in the middle of the hospital, right there in front of the entire hospital staff. Everyone is clapping, and whistling, and Dylan is kissing me, holding me. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
