Coinneach, Mrs.—One of the Protestant residents of Fraser’s Ridge, she attends Roger’s first sermon and notices that he seems nervous, as he’s sweating quite a bit. [Ashes]
Coles, Simon—Lawyer to the Thackerays. He receives a message from Anne Thackeray for her sister, Barbara; the letter offers limited information regarding her situation and gives a location somewhere in Southwark. [HS]
x Collet, Captain—(unknown) John Collet was a Swiss mapmaker who joined the British army and eventually became the commanding officer at Fort Johnston. [Ashes]
Collet, Corporal—After working under Lord John’s command for more than two years, he and his company function like a well-oiled machine. [BL]

x Cope, General—(1690–1760) John Cope was commander-in-chief of Scotland during the Jacobite uprising of 1745; he was defeated by Bonnie Prince Charles’s forces during an early-morning surprise attack at Prestonpans. Corey, Lieutenant—A Middlebrook Encampment officer who may have lied about Benjamin Grey’s death while a prisoner at the encampment. [MOBY]
x Cornbury, Lord—(1710–1753) Heir to the Earl of Clarendon. He tried to persuade the French to support an invasion to install the Old Pretender and overthrow King George; the French withdrew support, but the Jacobite association followed Cornbury even as he became god father to Lord John’s eldest stepbrother, Paul DeVane. x Cornell, Samuel—(1731–1781) Member of the Governor’s Royal Council and wealthy merchant from Edenton. Cornell was included in a council of war held by Governor Tryon and other leaders prior to the Battle of Alamance; he passed information to Jamie about Stephen Bonnet’s possible activities near the Outer Banks, most notably just where the contraband was supposedly unloaded. Crawford, Mrs.—One of Wilmington’s prominent hostesses, her musical evenings are in direct competition with those of Mrs. Dunning, and while her assembly lacked a poet of comic verse, lovely-smelling wax-myrtle candles were burned, prompting Claire and company to go on an outing to locate wax-myrtle berries. Cresswell, Captain—The white superintendent appointed by the Crown to oversee the maroons living on Jamaica; he disappeared prior to Lord John’s arrival and his whereabouts are unknown. [PZ]
Crombie, Hiram—A dour Scots Protestant immigrant and leader of the Protestant fisher-folk who settled on Fraser’s Ridge, he doesn’t always see eye to eye with the Catholic Frasers. Hiram studies the Indian languages from Ian and Jamie so he may minister God’s word to the tribes near the Ridge. [All]
Crombie, Mairi—Wife of Presbyterian settler Hiram Crombie and daughter of old Mrs. Wilson, who dies twice in one day. [Ashes]

Crossley, Mr.—A botanist friend of Mr. Stanhope, Crossley possesses an extensive ornamental garden in England. Stanhope wishes to exchange the roots and seeds of the North Carolina native flora for some of Crossley’s herbal garden specimens and offers to share the forthcoming specimens with Claire for use in medicines and healing. Crupp, Amos—Proprietor of the Wilmington newspaper, the Gazette, and the printer who changed the date of the fire on Fraser’s Ridge to save space, inevitably causing Brianna and Roger to travel to the eighteenth century. [Ashes, Echo]
Crusoe—A stable-hand at Lord Dunsany’s estate, Helwater, located in the Lake District of England. [SP]
Culper, Abel—The citizen with whom William is billeted after being sent to Long Island for fighting with Lieutenant “Chinless Ned” Markham over a crude cartoon. [Echo]
Culper, Abigail—One of Abel Culper’s elderly sisters, who dote on William; he returns the favor by bringing gifts of food or drink. [Echo]

x Dartmouth, Lord; William Legge—(1731–1801) Second Earl of Dartmouth, secretary of state for the colonies during the early part of the Revolution, and a proponent of educating and Christianizing the Indians. He helped finance a charitable Indian school in Connecticut but refused to be coerced into financially backing the New Hampshire college that its founder named in the earl’s honor. [Ashes]

x Deane, Silas—(1737–1789) American merchant and lawyer, agent sent to France to seek military assistance; conspired with Beaumarchais to use the fictitious Hortalez et Cie company to import weapons and ammunition into America for the Continental army. He was later accused of treason for unknowingly sharing information with British double agent Edward Bancroft but was not prosecuted, due to a lack of evidence at the time of the indiscretion. [Echo]
Deborah—Brianna’s twentieth-century friend who performed tarot readings when Brianna was at college; though Brianna would never let Deb read her cards, she dreams of a reading where the Hanged Man card keeps appearing, making her reflect on Roger’s dilemma. [Fiery Cross]

Duncan, Geillis (aka Geilie, Geillis Abernathy, and Gillian Edgars)—A mysterious young woman and fellow time traveler from the twentieth century, whom Claire meets upon her arrival in the eighteenth century. Accused of being a witch and murderess in Scotland, Geillis is sentenced to be burned but is given a temporary reprieve by reason of pregnancy; she bears a child to Dougal MacKenzie. With his help, she escapes to Paris, then makes her way to the West Indies, soon becoming the rich widow of plantation owner Mr. Abernathy.
