  Schnell, Jacob—One of Lizzie Wemyss’s suitors, son of a German cobbler and a friend of the Muellers; as Jacob is a Lutheran and lives near Salem, Jamie doesn’t think he’ll be a suitable match for Lizzie. [Fiery Cross]

  Schnell, Lieutenant—Jamie’s aide-de-camp at Monmouth. [MOBY]

  x Schuyler, Philip John, General—(1733–1804) Commander of the Northern Department of the Continental army. After losing Fort Ticonderoga to the British army in 1777, Schuyler was reprimanded and relieved of command by General Horatio Gates. More than a year later, a court-martial acquitted Schuyler of charges of incompetence, and he resigned his commission in 1779. [Echo]

  x Seaforth, Earl of—A patron of the Brahan Seer, and responsible for some of the Seer’s prophecies being written down to edify future ages. [MOBY]

  Seaumais Ruaidh—See “Jacob MacKenzie” and “Jamie Fraser.” (Jacobus is the Latin name equivalent of James, so both Jacob and James are treated the same in terms of translation.)

  Seona—A Scottish woman with a lazy eye from Surry County, and cousin to Archie, Hilda McGillivray’s husband; her name is mentioned as a possible bride for Ronnie Sinclair. [Ashes]

  Seppings—The butler at Lavender House, a meeting place for homosexual men. [PM]

  Sequoyah—A Cherokee who brought the bones of a dead settler to Jamie to prove the Cherokee were not killing settlers. [Ashes]

  Shaffstall, Abe—A militiaman who kindly shares food and drink with Lord John, after he is discovered by the Reverend Woodsworth’s militia company. [MOBY]

  Shelby—A parlor maid employed at Fanshawe’s manor, she relayed information to Barbara regarding the severity of Marcus Fanshawe’s injuries. [HS]

  Sheridan, Lady—A woman attending the wedding of Benedicta Grey and General Sir George Stanley. She gives Lord John a flirtatious smile over her fan while he’s attempting to alert a woman—any woman—to Olivia’s distress due to her advanced pregnancy. [BL]

  Sheriff of Orange County; David Anstruther—He carries a letter from Governor Tryon to the Regulators, telling them to disassemble and go home or else prepare to fight. [Fiery Cross]

  Sherston, Hubert—An acquaintance of Jocasta Cameron. After Roger’s terrible ordeal at Alamance, he is carried to the Sherstons’ home in Hillsborough, to recuperate. [Fiery Cross]

  Sherston, Phoebe (identified as Penelope in early editions)—The impulsive wife of Hubert Sherston, she appears after the Battle of Alamance with food, then offers her Hillsborough home to Roger and Brianna while Roger recuperates from his near-death experience; Brianna has been commissioned to paint the portrait of Mrs. Sherston, so she and Roger stay until he’s able to be moved.   x Shippen, Edward—(1729–1806) Philadelphia Loyalist and father of Peggy Shippen. [MOBY]

  x Shippen, Peggy—(1760–1804) Born into a prominent Philadelphia family, she helped Peggy Chew and John André with the decorations for the mischianza; she later became the second wife of Benedict Arnold, shortly before he switched sides and became a traitor to the Continental army. In our story, we see her briefly when Claire is summoned (by Benedict Arnold, then a friend of the Shippen family) to attend Peggy’s cousin, Tench Bledsoe, who has been attacked and badly injured by the Sons of Liberty in Philadelphia. Claire observes the young Miss Shippen’s eyeing of General Arnold, like that of “a fisherman who has just seen a fat trout swim right under the lure.” [Echo, MOBY]

  Sholto, Mr.—Owner of one of the largest apothecaries in Philadelphia, he supplies Lord John—and thereby Claire—with the vitriol (sulfuric acid) for the creation of the ether to be used on both Henri-Christian and Henry Grey. [Echo]

  Shoreditch, Jebediah, Corporal—A Continental soldier wounded after bravely charging the Great Redoubt at Saratoga; he is recuperating but, due to his injuries, needs help attending to the call of nature. [Echo]

  Sibelius, Dr.—The doctor who was caring for Governor Martin’s wife in New Bern prior to Claire’s arrest, he is a proponent of bloodletting and dosing his pregnant patient with laudanum, practices that Claire frowns upon. [Ashes]

  Simmonds—One of the surgeons assigned to Hal’s regiment in Prussia. [BL]

  Simms, Fogarty—Proprietor of the Chronicle, the local newspaper for Cross Creek. When a riotious crowd tries to tar-and-feather him for publishing unpopular opinions, Jamie Fraser comes to his aid, distracting the crowd. His efforts are aided by Fergus, who slashes a feather mattress and rains feathers over the astonished crowd, enabling Jamie to snatch Simms away to safety. [Ashes]

  Simon and Peter—Germain Fraser’s pet frogs—one green and one yellow—which he tosses in Percy Wainwright’s path on the Wilmington docks. [Echo]

  Simpson, Mr.—An official employed at the Arsenal at Woolwich, where Lord John has been summoned for a royal inquiry. [HS]

  Simpson, Mrs. (Zachary)—Wife of the farmer storing Jamie’s printing press, and breeder of the short-legged chicken known as the Scots Dumpy. [MOBY]

  Simpson, Zachary—A farmer outside Savannah, Georgia, hired by Richard Bell to store Jamie’s printing press in his barn. [MOBY]

  Sinclair, Ronnie—A bachelor and one of the ex-prisoners from Ardsmuir who make Fraser’s Ridge their home; a cooper by trade, his skill in making whisky casks earns him land and a shop—which is a focus for gossip and news from the surrounding countryside. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Sister Amos—The head nurse when Claire was a nurse during WWII. [MOBY]

  Sister Anne-Joseph—One of the nuns who work in the stable. She warns Sister Gregory (Joan), who is helping with the milking, that Mirabeau the cow has a bad temper and has kicked three nuns and spilled the milk twice in less than a week. [SB]

  Sister Eudoxia—An elderly Anglican nun and distant relative of Lady Dunsany’s, Jamie met her when she stayed at Helwater for a time; she explained to Jamie about “fridstools” as a solitary place of meditation and reflection. [SP]

  Sister Eustacia—The senior nun in charge of the postulants at the Convent of Angels. [SB]

  Sister George—The stout nun from the Convent of Angels who carries the household fund to the market, zealously protecting it—and the food it purchases—against pickpockets and thieves. [SB]

  Sister Jeanne-Marie—One of the nuns who is upset after Mirabeau kicks not only the nuns but the milk pail, as well. [SB]

  Sister Marie Romaine—A nun at Brianna’s parochial school, who cautioned that Catholics were not allowed to do divination of any kind because it was a seduction of the devil; the nun’s warning worked well for Bree, preventing her from having her college friend read her tarot cards. [Fiery Cross]

  Sister Marie-Amadeus—One of the supervisory nuns at L’ Hôpital des Anges, she directs the postulants on their duties. [SB]

  Sister Mathilde—A nun from le Couvent des Anges. [SB]

  Sister Miséricorde de Dieu; Mercy—One of the postulants at le Couvent des Anges. [SB]

  Sister Philomène—A timid young nun who blushes easily. [SB]

  Siverly, Gerald, Major—Charlie Carruthers’s commanding officer in Canada, he is cruel and corrupt, raiding and plundering the villages. Instead of sharing the bounty with his men, as is the army’s custom, he withholds it to sell in the private market, then begins to withhold the soldiers’ pay, causing his men to mutiny and physically protest his practices. Carruthers, knowing he hasn’t long to live, has compiled a damning dossier of Siverly’s crimes, which he confides to his good friend (and onetime lover) John Grey, saying that he trusts Lord John to see justice done. John is determined to do just that, despite the slightly awkward fact that Siverly saved his life during the Battle of Quebec, and he shows the dossier to his brother, Hal, who—a career soldier and the colonel of his own regiment—is shocked and infuriated, then determines to convict Siverly of his crimes. To this end, he dragoons Jamie Fraser, a priso
ner of war, to accompany John to Ireland and bring Siverly back to face court-martial. Their attempt is foiled by Siverly’s murder. There are several suspects (Lord John himself is arrested on suspicion, he having found the body), but the crime is ultimately proved to have been committed by Jamie’s erstwhile Irish Jacobite friend Tobias Quinn.   Siverly, Marcus—Gerald Siverly’s father. One of the Wild Geese—the Irish brigades that fought for the Stuarts during the Williamite wars of the late-seventeenth century. [SP]

  Siverly, Mrs.—The estranged wife of Gerald Siverly. She moved back to live with her parents when her husband was sent to Canada, and she stayed with them after her husband’s return. [SP]

  Siward—One of the characters in Shakespeare’s “Scottish play,” Macbeth, and possibly the secret name given to Victor Arbuthnot by other conspirators involved in the Jacobite plot to kill King George and sit James Stuart in his place. [BL]

  Six Turtles—One of the Montauk Five, a group of twentieth-century Native American purists who disappeared in 1968. [Fiery Cross]

  Sleeps with Snakes—One of Ian’s Mohawk comrades and a renowned storyteller for the tribe. [Ashes]

  Smith, John—See “Bill Marsden.”

  Smith, Watson, Colonel—Smith is a turncoat, a British officer who has taken service with the Continental army. Lord John meets him when the militiamen who took him from Jamie Fraser bring him to their commanding officer—Smith, whom Lord John last met over cucumber sandwiches in his sister-in-law’s drawing room. The slight social awkwardness of this meeting is quickly submerged by the real possibility that John may be hanged as a spy once Smith sends him to General Wayne—and by the interesting fact that John feels a considerable physical attraction to Smith. Neither hanging nor seduction lies in the cards, though, as John’s niece, Dorothea, helps him to escape before either possibility can eventuate. [MOBY]

  Soeur Immaculata—Mother Superior at the Ursuline convent where William spends his winter while in Quebec with Captain Randall-Isaacs; she claims to know Lord John, who possibly met her when he was part of the invading force during the Battle of Quebec in September of 1759. [Echo]

  Sophronia—Young slave belonging to Mr. Bradshaw; she suffers from an embarrassing fistula that occurred while she attempted to give birth to her owner’s child. [MOBY]

  Sorrel, Mr.—A Philadelphia neighbor of Fergus’s family, and also an annoying and ardent admirer of Fergus’s wife, Marsali. [MOBY]

  x Spencer, Joseph, Colonel—(1714–1789) An obstinate old soldier and veteran of two previous colonial wars. He’s a friend of Hal’s, who warns William not to play cards with the wily old colonel. [Echo]

  Springer, Robert—See “Otter-Tooth.”

  Sprocket, Mrs.—Wife of William Sprocket. [MOBY]

  Sprocket, William—Fellow Quaker; he and his wife were forced from meeting, but they support Denzell and Dottie (and Rachel and Ian) in their desire to marry. [MOBY]

  x St. Clair, Arthur, General—(1737–1818) Head of the New Jersey militia, who attained the rank of general in the Continental army; after the humiliation of abandoning Fort Ticonderoga to British General Burgoyne’s forces, he was court-martialed for the loss but was exonorated during the trial. Jamie Fraser, present during the lead-up to the attack on Ticonderoga, had frequent arguments with St. Clair over his incompetent preparation. [Echo]

  x St. Germain, Robert François Quesnay de (aka Comte St. Germain)1—A very mysterious man, once a member of Louis’s French court; a noble with a reputation for dabbling in the occult and Prince Charles Stuart’s business partner; he is also suspected of being the secret biological father of Fergus “Claudel” Fraser. Different accounts also give the family name as Rakoczy, and the Comte is reported on (vaguely) from a number of different locations in Europe over a surprising span of time—not all that surprising, given his capacity for time travel.   x St. Leger, Barry, Colonel—(1733–1789) Officer selected by General Burgoyne to lead combined forces of two thousand men in the western offensive for the Saratoga campaign, a large number of Joseph Brant’s Mohawks being part of this contingency. After several difficulties, St. Leger attempted to rejoin Burgoyne’s main army at Saratoga but only got as far as Fort Ticonderoga before Burgoyne surrendered his army in September 1777. [Echo]

  Stactoe, Lieutenant—A surgeon with the Continental army at Fort Ticonderoga, he is more concerned with keeping Claire away from the patients and his instruments than with the cleanliness of his instruments and welfare of his patients. [Echo]

  Stan—The builder hired by Brianna to renovate and update Lallybroch after the MacKenzies return to the twentieth century. [Ashes]

  Standing Bear—One of the Cherokee elders from Bird’s tribe; he receives the honor of possessing one of the rifles that Jamie has promised Bird. [Ashes]

  Stanhope, Lloyd—One of Phillip Wylie’s friends and cohorts at Jocasta and Duncan’s wedding. While also quite prosperous, Stanhope is more subdued than Wylie in his dress; he’s amused by Wylie’s attraction to the much older Claire—and by her disdainful reaction. [Fiery Cross]

  Stanley, George, General, Sir—Third husband to Benedicta Grey and stepfather to Lord John, Hal; he’s also stepfather to Percy Wainwright, son of Stanley’s deceased first wife. [BL, HS, SP, Echo]

  Stapleton, Neil; Neil the Cunt (aka Goldie-Locks)—A secretary for Hubert Bowles; he keeps a secret life as a homosexual man employed by a government official. [PM, BL, HS]

  x Stark, John, Colonel—(1728–1822) Later promoted to brigadier general, Stark gained fame due to his cry before the attack on Baum’s Hessian dragoons at the Battle of Bennington, proclaiming victory or his wife would become a widow. He is also one of several officers present at Bunker Hill credited with giving the instruction, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes!” [Ashes, Echo]

  x Stark, Molly—(1737–1814) The wife of Colonel John Stark, she gained fame due to her husband’s cry before the Bennington attack on Baum’s Hessian dragoons, proclaiming victory or his wife would become a widow. [Echo]

  Stebbings, Worth, Captain—Captain of the British naval cutter Pitt, he boards the Teal with the intention to press its men—including Ian and Jamie—into His Majesty’s navy. [Echo]

  Steffens, Kaptain—An officer in von Namtzen’s regiment. [SU]

  Stern, Laurence—A German Jewish naturalist who meets Claire in a mangrove swamp on Hispaniola, when she flees the Porpoise in search of Jamie. Jamie has heard of the philosopher during his conversations with Lord John during his own captivity. [Fiery Cross, Echo, SP]

  Still Water—Brother to Cherokee chief Tsisqua (Bird-who-sings-in-the-morning) and war chief for the village. [Echo]

  Stoelers, Herman—The lean, pleasant manager of Beardsley’s trading post in the backcountry of the Carolina mountains. (Also, coincidentally, the name of the husband of my good friend, Elva Stoelers.) [MOBY]

  Stokes, Iphigenia—Timothy O’Connell’s London mistress. She is a woman of Greek descent, a seamstress, and one of a family of petty smugglers of contraband goods but not smuggled secrets, though she is known to Hubert Bowles and his Black Chamber. [PM]

  Stornaway, Mr.—A resident of Fraser’s Ridge who passes a stone; the stone is later shown to Jem and Germain. [Ashes]

  Stoughton, Howard—Master founder of the Royal Armory, he has been at the heart of a plot to steal copper from army artillery to sell to the British navy at a profit. [HS]

  Strasse, Heinrich—A suitor for Senga McGillivray’s hand. He is dashing and handsome but also a poor Lutheran; still, strong-willed Senga chooses him as her husband over her mother’s favored suitor, Ronnie Sinclair. [Ashes]

  Strong Walker—One of the Montauk Five, a group of twentieth-century Native American purists who disappeared in 1968. [Fiery Cross]

  x Stuart, Charles Edward (aka Prince Tearlach)—(1720–1788) The Young Pretender; Bonnie Prince Charlie; son of James (III of England, VII of Scotland). Heir to the exiled Catholic royal dynasty, in 1745 he attempted t
o invade and overthrow British rule in Scotland. Despite leading over six thousand loyal Scottish troops to battle, he suffered the worst defeat on native soil, at Culloden Moor on April 16, 1746, when the Duke of Cumberland crushed the Scots using superior artillery firepower across an open battlefield. When it became clear his cause was defeated, Charles abandoned his troops and fled for the coast, where he escaped to Italy and lived out his days in exile. [SP, All]

  x Stuart, John—(1718–1779) A former militia captain, Stuart gained valuable knowledge working with the Native Americans and was appointed by the British government as superintendent in the Indian Department to oversee relations with all the southern tribes; he was so successful that when the Revolutionary War broke out, most of the tribes in the area supported the British. [Ashes]

  Stubbs—Owner of a Fleet Street printing shop where copies of Harry Quarry’s book of erotic poetry could be purchased (no apparent relation to Malcolm Stubbs). [SP]

  Stubbs, Bryce—Malcolm’s brother with the Forty-sixth Foot (soldiers), stationed in Calcutta as part of Robert Clive’s assault against the Nawab of Bengal. [PM]

  Stubbs, Cromwell Percival John Malcolm—The name given to Olivia Stubbs’s baby, in honor of the two men who helped deliver him—John and Percy—as well as in reference to Oliver Cromwell, whom John jokingly told his cousin Olivia her newborn son resembled. [BL, CA]

  Stubbs, Malcolm, Captain—An officer in Lord John’s regiment, he later marries John’s cousin, Olivia, but is assigned to duty in Canada before their first child is born. He also has an illegitimate child with an Indian mistress in Canada, but he abandons the boy when he is seriously wounded during the Battle of Quebec and is subsequently sent back to England. (Lord John takes the boy after the death of his mother from smallpox and confides him to the care of a Catholic orphanage, giving him the name John Cinnamon, for the color of his hair.) [PM, BL, CA]

  Stubbs, Melissa—Malcolm’s twin sister, whom Malcolm is eager to introduce to Lord John as a possible match. [PM]

  Stubbs, Olivia (aka Olivia Pearsall)—Lord John’s cousin, formerly Olivia Pearsall. Orphaned as a child, she is Hal’s ward and lives with John and Hal’s mother, Benedicta Grey. She was betrothed to Joseph Trevelyan when she was sixteen, but the contract was canceled; she later marries Malcolm Stubbs, a lieutenant in Lord John’s regiment, who is assigned duty in Canada. She gives birth to their first child under the organ loft during the wedding ceremony for Benedicta and Sir George Stanley. [PM, BL, HS, CA]
