  And then I got it. I felt a word, a phrase rise up from my memory … my memory? ‘Auhsoru ny settii thosm!’

  Then the hull began to grow, upward I mean. I felt myself expanding as I *Channeled* all that pain, that excess energy, rushed into me from So’Yeth, through me, through the orb and into the ship.

  Between the main and missile-deck, the missile and berth-deck, and the berth and G-deck the hull grew an extra foot in height. Oars emerged from these new decks and touched into the water in three tiers. Those wooden elves began pulling with all their might, as long as I could funnel all that energy through.

  The oars moved in a staggered rotation, at all times one set of oars were in the water. Combined with the sails, we started making some fast time … but it wasn’t enough. Those red seams were bypassing us and everything was chaos and pandemonium.

  *Faster … faster … faster* I urged, putting all my own essence into things. I could not tell what Jha’Ley was saying, but he was doing his thing. We started skimming water on my, on the Lohri’s belly. I felt something reach down, a dagger board, to keep contact with the sea as we got so fast the hull’s bottom no longer touched.

  All around me I heard the tribal drums with their savage rhythm. Again I saw the dancing warriors and my blood quickened. The sound … the sound … could I absorb the sound? Yes-s-s … I drew the vibration of the music into me from across unknown boundaries and merged the power with that of So’Yahr, then I drew from So’Mahnu, the essence of the sea, and channeled that in as well.

  We began to overtake the red lines, but as we did I could feel the compass suddenly begin to spin erratically as a blanket of dead essence wrapped around me. But So’Yeth was still there as we outran the undersea eruption.

  Finally, there was no more pain, no more abundance of power, and I collapsed. I looked up and saw my momma’s smiling face as she said, “Well done, my son. Your mohnutha is proud of you.”

  In a surreal voice that was not truly mine I replied, “Thank you Shei’Lu …” and I fell asleep.

  Epilogue

  WE SAILED UNDER partial canvas for days, going by the sands of the hourglasses to measure time. Our heading was based on Jha’Ley’s hunch alone. The compass was worthless, unless you wished entertainment by watching its gyrating and spinning. The orb was firm and unmoving, budging only a bit when I raised my hand above it. I was not able to repeat my merging, but why?

  We hoped to see the sky. Had a new star appeared, causing the same types of disaster as the green one had? Is that what caused my own experience? It made sense it was connected, although the green one had caused nothing of the like in my case.

  Jha’Ley kept vigilance on something else, he was staring at his chronometer. Only a select few knew the meaning of this. He was watching the hands spin radically forward, then backward, forward a bit, back again, then forward.

  I was beside him when his body language changed; the hands came to a slow stop. The mist cleared and far before us was an ominous rocky island. Eventually we could see a city of sorts with vessels of all sizes and designs at port.

  A man asked, “Where are we?”

  Jha’Ley replied, “We have reached Fn’Jaht gentlemen.”

  Caroll quietly asked, “When may we be, captain?”

  Jha’Ley paused, then answered with a smile, “Two days before the eruption. Mister Telroy, all ahead. Our fortune lies in Layuno.”

  I SWAM IN near panic, pulling myself deeper and deeper and into an underwater ravine; what happened to my friends I didn’t know. My *Warmth* effect was only good as long as I could focus, and that focus was nearly dashed … a bad thing in the deep, freezing waters of Torsham’s Vault.

  We knew of the creature’s existence, but the sea covers a lot of territory and it could have been anywhere. There had been no sign of it until now and it had caught us by complete surprise. Were my friends dead, injured, worse? Where were they?

  No heat signatures were inside the ledge. Quickly I kept moving through a tunnel in the vast rock. Peering out the other end and looking up into the turbulent water, I let my gaze follow the submerged mountains, then down into a series of caverns.

  How far down had I gone? My pulse had yet to slow and my webbed hands were hard at work. In places I pulled myself along by just grabbing rock, still keeping focus on *Adaptation* as I very much needed to keep breathing.
