Now we are done. Let's go home.

No one in town really knew much about the battle that didn't really take place, and nobody knew what started the fires. All they knew for sure was that the Wizard Vail was dead and his keep a mound of ash and rubble caused by a gigantic fire.

The four of them talked about it between themselves quietly as they rubbed down their horses. They decided to spend the night in the stable because it really was cleaner than the inn, and paid the stable keeper a little extra for allowing them to stay. They were just drifting off to sleep when a nightmarish cackle cut through the evening quiet.

An old hag appeared before them. Her gray hair held bits of twigs and straw that stuck out from her head like porcupine quills. Her wrinkles were so deep a butter knife could be lost in it and her apron so greasy and spotted you could use it as a well-seasoned frying pan. Not that anyone would want to. She held a walking stick in one hand and the reins to a sturdy looking mule in the other.

"You," she said, pointing her stick at Ellora, "I heard you want to make a bargain with me."

  Ellora nodded.

"Well, then I see you at my mountain home, and don't be late." She twirled the walking stick around once in the air and both her and the mule disappeared.

"Did you see that," Christol asked.

"I think we all saw it, except for Jogli."

"I felt it. I know her magic well."

"Well, what are we going to do?" Ellora asked.

"I guess we're going for a long, long ride," Christol answered, and rolled over in his sleeping robes and promptly fell asleep.
