She turned away from her window to see Branson standing at the door to her office. “When did you get here?” she asked, even as he shut the door behind him.
“Just a few minutes ago. I came to take the owner of the company to lunch.”
She smiled and started to grab her purse, but he came to stand in front of her, looking oddly hesitant. “I know you don’t like gifts, but I found something I think you’ll like.”
She tilted her head to one side, trying to guess what he’d bought her now. Last week, it had been new office chairs for her and her four employees. “We just got a new printer. And new teleconferencing software. I think we’re good—”
“It’s not for the company. And it’s not that big,” he said as he pulled out a tiny box, no bigger than the palm of his hand. He came around the desk and took one of her hands in his, still holding out the box. “I think you know what this one means.”
She looked down, worried that she didn’t. Was this really a ring? They’d been dating for some time, and of course they loved each other, but getting married…that was a big step for her casual, “everything will work out” love of her life.
“Will this make you believe me?” he asked, dropping down on one knee and looking up at her. “Nicole…will you marry me and make me the happiest man alive?”
“Aren’t you going to show me the ring first?”
“I’m a little nervous,” he said, and he cracked open the box.
The ring was gorgeous. He’d been paying attention to all the hints she’d been dropping along the way.
“I know where the wedding needs to be,” he said.
“Somewhere on a beach?”
“You know me so well.”
She smiled. She decided not to mention that her friend Tiffany had also gotten married on a beach. It didn’t matter. Every one of her friends could get married on a beach, and it would still feel special to her. As long as she had him. The one man who knew her so well.
“You already know my answer, don’t you?” she asked.
“Maybe I want to hear you say it.”
“Yes, you crazy man. Now kiss me.”

Back in Red Canyon, years ago, he left her hanging by suddenly joining the military, leaving without a word. She never forgave him for that night, and now she has to go back to the very town he lives in, contending with small town life, family medical issues, and the ghosts of a past relationship.
She hopes Brandon will avoid her, but that’s short-lived. He steps back into her life in a way she doesn’t want, or at least, so she thinks.
