Kiss the Bricks

Elena turned fierce. “I hated the story he told then, and we will say nothing to him now. He’s about glory for himself and doesn’t care about his subjects.”

Tony smiled. “We’ll give Lyla Thomas the exclusive. She’s always treated PJ and you right.”

  There’s another kind of justice.

The other stop we made was the Frame Savings condo in downtown, where my father and his family were staying for the week—and where my stepmother, Amelia, had a plate of cookies and a pitcher of lemonade waiting. We sat around the large living room, its floor-to-ceiling windows open for the breeze and the view of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and I told them the story. I also thanked my father and Eddie for their help. My father, predictably, got stuck on the danger we were in the evening before.

“My grandfather was at the most risk,” I reminded him.

“But you could all have been—”

Amelia put a hand on my father’s arm. “They weren’t. They were smart and resourceful.”

“Don’t forget lucky,” Eddie put in, making Ryan laugh.

I nodded. “It’s over now. PJ is laid to rest—hopefully in the media as well—and tonight we’ll focus on racing and nothing else. All right?”

They all agreed, and my father walked us to the door. He cleared his throat before he opened it. “I assume your grandfather will be at the banquet this evening?”

I nodded. “At the same table. Will that be a problem?”

“Not for me. I hope it’s not one for him.”

I glanced at Ryan. “Ryan’s spent more time with him the last couple days. Has he said anything?”

“Nothing specific, but I think he’s mellowing.” He looked at James. “He’ll be fine tonight—but don’t expect any heart-to-hearts. Though I think you’d like each other, given the chance.”

James’ smile was rueful. “Perhaps that can be a future goal. In the meantime, Kate, let me know how I can help you.”

When I read the information from my grandmother.

I felt the weight of those secrets on my shoulders, and I straightened. Took a deep breath. “I’ll let you know. That’s what family’s for—support when we need it.”

My father’s eyes got shiny, and he cleared his throat before opening the door. “However, tonight, we forget all of that, and we celebrate a great effort, a great driver, and a bright future together.”

I kissed his cheek and took Ryan’s hand. “I like the sound of that.”
