I tried to stand up, but my legs were wobbly. My head felt like it would explode and the pain in my ear throbbed. I could only see out of one eye as the other one was swelling shut. I fell back down to the floor still clutching the side of my bed. My back was facing outward and that’s when I felt a pound then searing pain radiate through my backside. He had kicked me in the kidney while still wearing his steel-toed boots.

I could no longer hold on to the bed, so I rolled over on my back. I saw him, the Beast, looming over me. His eyes blazed and his lips curled. He was going to kill me, I knew it. I hoped it would be fast, just get it over with. I saw his foot come up, then crash down on my stomach, cracking two ribs. I felt blood trickle down my face and into my mouth. Tastes salty I thought. My brain was trying to make sense out of something that didn’t make any at all.

I put up my hands, trying in futility to stop any more blows, to plead with him to stop. However, he was in a blind rage. Only one thing would stop him.

The bullet entered the back of his head and exited his right eye. I heard the pop and watched as he swayed back and forth then fell backwards. It was all in slow motion and I would play that scene over and over in my mind through the years. Then I saw him…Eli.

He bent over and picked me up as if I was light as a feather. I heard other voices and could make out Judge, Bruce and Frito before I passed out.

When I awoke, I was in one of the backrooms of the clubhouse. The right side of my head was bandaged over my ear and eye. My ribs were also bandaged. My head pounded and it hurt when I breathed. Lila was sitting in a chair reading.

  “What’s going on…ohh I’m so thirsty,” I croaked.

“Nat, baby, you’re going to be alright. Here take a sip of water,” Lila said as she brought me a glass with a straw. I took a long sip then fell back onto my pillow.

“You have to rest young lady. You’ve been through something traumatic, but you’re going to be okay.”

“What happened to my dad,” I asked.

  “Eli will explain honey.”

“Did I go to the hospital?”

“No hon, the MC has a doctor so he took care of you. You’re going to be just fine, but you have to rest. Try and swallow this pain pill and then sleep.”

I did as I was told and eventually fell into a deep and thankfully dreamless sleep.

I was in and out the next few days, mainly because of the sleeping pills the MC Doctor prescribed. While I didn’t want to sleep that long, it likely helped me heal faster. When I was finally able to get out of bed and put some clothes on, I saw my face for the first time since it happened. My eye was swollen and all different shades of a dark and warped rainbow, but I could still see out of it. My eardrum was ruptured but the doctor assured me it would heal and my hearing would return. I lifted my pajama top and examined the bruises on my stomach and back. The bandage wraps were gone and all that was left were gigantic purple and black bruises. I still ached and took my fair share of Tylenol 3s.

Eli, of course, was by my side much of the time. He explained to me how he had heard the yelling when he drove up. He brought Judge, Bruce and Frito along just in case my dad became hostile about me leaving. He thought a show of force would cool his heels.

When Eli came in and saw me on the floor covered in blood and my father ready to bash my skull in with his lifted boot, he fired his gun. He didn’t push or knock him away. Just placed the gun at the back of his head and fired. Simple and effective.

Eli wasn’t the type to suffer fools and my dad was no exception. He wasn’t going to let this happen again. Bruce and Judge wrapped my father’s body in trash bags and took it across the county line to a state forestry where they buried him so deep no animals would dig up his bones. Frito stayed and cleaned up the mess in the house and Eli brought me to the MC where their doctor, Dr. Chainey, took care of me.

I asked Eli to take me to my father’s grave. He didn’t want to, but finally relented. As I looked down at his final resting place, I felt for once in my life calmness settle over me. Then I leaned over and spit on his grave. My last final act to a father who was no father at all. My hero stood before me, the man who saved my life. I loved him. More than I thought possible. We had a lot of living to do, and I was more than ready.
