  “That’s crazy. He saw that you needed someone to show you the ropes and I was…well, available.”

  She laughed hard. Maybe a bit dramatic, but it came to her like an almost completed puzzle. “You don’t know my dad like I do. He won’t stop at anything to find a man to marry me. And you, well, of course, you’re just like him.”

  Nix growled. “Not only do I think you’re wrong about him trying to play matchmaker, but what does that say for you? You do find me attractive. So, if you’re dad and I are just like, then maybe you appreciate and respect him, and his profession, more than you’d like to own up to.”

  She cringed. “I was lonely when I met you.”

  “Or maybe you were just aching for a real man. Not all those weak ass boys you were choosing.”

  Damn. He was hitting the nail on the head, but if her theory was correct, she couldn’t let her dad win. “You’re full of yourself,” she sighed.

  “Am I really?”

  “I don’t think you know how to take a woman who doesn’t fall at your feet with a flash of that charming smile.”

  “Lady, you’ve been sending me mixed messages since day one. When will you admit that you want me to take control…and take you to bed.” He shot her a heated eye.

  “That’s what you’d like to think. I’m sure the blonde at the cabin feeds into your ego.” She rolled her eyes.

  With a jerk of his hands, he pulled the truck into a pull off spot and parked under a curtain of trees. He undid his seatbelt, reached over and clicked hers open. “For the last and final time, I have never, and will never sleep with Hope. I think you know that, but you keep bringing it up just to give yourself an excuse not to let go and do this.” His arm snaked around her waist and he dragged her closer, his mouth slammed down over hers in a punishing kiss. Melly moaned and slid her hand on his chest, pushing, shoving, but her fight fizzled, taken over by something primal and delicious. Her resistance faded away, leaving a yearning so strong that she was engulfed in pleasure. She succumbed to him, opening her mouth to allow him entry. Nix shoved his tongue inside, licking the roof of her mouth and tingles shot through her. All the resistance she’d thought she’d built against him crumbled as they tore into each like two twisters colliding.

  Nix pulled back, his breathing heavy and his eyes marked with something primal. “We should stop.”

  “No. We shouldn’t.” She pushed him back against his seat and crawled over his lap. The space between him and the steering wheel was cramped, and he reached down and pushed a lever that sent the seat as far back as it would go. She kissed his forehead, each cheek, and a quick one on the lips. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been this hot and bothered in the cab of a truck.”

  He looked at her. “I don’t care, Melly.” He palmed her face in his large hands. “I want to erase your memory of all those other men. I want to ruin you for anyone but me. Just as you’ve ruined me for anyone else.”

  Pressing her lips to his, she loved kissing him—loved how spectacular they were together. She couldn’t get enough. He seemed to own the key to her engine. Taking her from an uncertain, slow pace to a rip-roaring, burning need in seconds. Being here, with him, in his arms was an undeniable heaven. It didn’t make sense. She shouldn’t want him like this. No, need him like this. She didn’t care about tomorrow, or that she had to eventually tell him about the baby. What she cared for was being here with him, even if just for a moment.

  She felt his fingers at her waist and then he dragged her shirt up and off her shoulders. He stared before he dipped his head and kissed the top of her breasts overflowing from the cups of her bra. She was proud of the fact that her breasts were larger, and more sensitive. As his lips moved across the mounds, she dropped her cheek to her shoulder, mesmerizing in how good it felt to have him touch her. With a click of his wrist, he undid the front snap of her bra and the flimsy material flounced away from her breasts that were now mounds of sensitive flesh. He kissed one nipple, rolling his tongue around the bud, dragging it into his mouth. She cried out and gyrated her hips, pressing her inner thighs against the bulge of his zipper.

  “I love your tits. They’re perfect, and your nipples, a perfect shade of rose,” he said against her breast as he left a trail of warm kisses on the journey to her other breast that begged for the same attention. When she thought she’d scream in pleasure, he pulled his head back, sliding his hand down her stomach and undid the button and zipper, and she was a goner.

  I’m a bastard. I shouldn’t be doing this.

  Nix didn’t listen to his own words of wisdom. He couldn’t help himself. He could practically smell the need rolling off Melly in wave after wave. He couldn’t have stopped if his life depended upon it. He was rock hard and watching her dilated pupils and her chest rising and falling with each breath turned him inside out.

  The satisfaction of knowing he’d have her again could not be described. He’d wanted this, envisioned this, from the second he woke up and she’d been gone from his bed. Damn, she looked like a vision of innocence, and yet he knew she had been hardened by loss, betrayal. He also knew she had issues, he’d said as much during their argument, and yet not even that fact drove him away.

  Long, silken strands of her dark hair brushed his hands as he cupped her swollen breasts. He didn’t quite remember them being so large. She dropped her cheek to her shoulder and her hair swung over her full lips that were the color of cherries. Her mouth parted and the sweetest whimper drifted to his ears as he sucked in a breath, feeling all his chains breaking. He’d always prided himself in being tough, demanding that life mold to his desires and not the other way around, and yet it was as if fate had plans for him. He ached to rip the rest of her clothes off, undo his jeans, and fuck her until she screamed, but another part of him wanted to revel in the moment of watching her, bringing her satisfaction.

  He realized he cared for her, another dose of reality he’d told her in their argument. When he cared for someone, he gave them all, protected and loved them. He craved her, needed her more than he needed his next breath, he was a bastard for involving himself with Carson’s daughter, but he’d wither if he didn’t have her. He never claimed to be a a saint.

  Nix tangled his fingers in her hair, wrapping the strands of silk around his knuckles and bringing them to his nose to inhale the tempting scent. Her eyes were so bright as she looked down at him, like she’d gathered a handful of sun rays and planted them in her irises. Touching her was like touching a rainbow, so bright and colorful. He grazed his knuckles along her cheek, taunted by how soft her skin was compared to his callused hands. The need to have her flowed into his bloodstream like a finely aged whiskey. Tremors of need moved through him, over and over. He shouldn’t take her here, in the front seat of his truck, but a storm was brewing in her blue eyes and they entranced him, bound him in an invisible rope like a prisoner.

  “I-I can’t believe how good this feels,” she whispered.

  There was a soft urgency in her voice, one that spoke of a desire that needed nurturing. He knew exactly what she was feeling because he also was full of the same sensation. Her tongue darted out between her plump lips, moistening the cherry plumpness and drawing him deeper into her warm, heavenlike web.

  Nix claimed her mouth, craving to nibble her, but refusing the hunger. He kissed her so hard he was afraid he might bruise the cherry beauties and he softened his kiss, denying himself was like punishment. He pushed his tongue inside, making love to her mouth, sampling her taste and losing himself in the cradle of longing. She softened like honey butter against him, her arms coming up to wrap around his neck, her bare breasts pressing his chest. The cotton of his T-shirt was no defense against the feeling.

  Her purrs came up her throat and he swallowed the sounds as her hands slipped from his neck to slide up inside his shirt. He concentrated on the heady feeling of her short nails scraping his skin, her fingers pressing into him. He wanted her hands everywhere on his body, wou
ld have walked across fiery coals just to have it.

  Nix pulled away, looking into her blue pools of tranquility and her swollen, semi-parted lips still moist from his kiss. He could feel her heart beat, could smell her desire. He brushed his thumb over her nipple and his body quivered.

  “Are you sure you want this here, sweetheart?” He had to be sure.

  “Do you think you could drive another hour to your cabin?”

  “Hell no.”

  “And neither could I,” she admitted.

  He loved the fact that she didn’t feel the need to be coy. He brought his chin up to whisper in her ear, “Tell me you want me. Admit that we’re not just a rebellious act, but that you want me to take you. Say it!” he commanded.

  “I-I,” she gasped the word, pleasure filling her expression. “I want you to take me. I’m wet and ready for you.” Her hunger laced her voice that drove him even closer to an invisible edge of no return.

  “Yes, baby. Yes.” He kissed the tip of her nose. His hands shook with need. He hadn’t wanted any woman more, never thought he could be reached in such a way. He’d go to his grave only wanting her and the reality tore into him like razor claws. His brothers would think he was insane, but Nix didn’t doubt his emotions. He’d be willing to give up everything, even his career, to make this beautiful woman his for life. He wanted more with her and it shocked him all the way down to his dirty boots. Hell, truth be known, the moment he saw her he knew he wanted her. She’d claimed his heart and she had no clue. It was all so simple and yet so complicated too.

  He walked his finger down her spine until he reached the plump firmness of her ass. He wanted to let his tongue follow the same path, but for now, in the cramped truck he’d have to wait.

  Chapter 12

  THE WAY THAT Nix was with her, dominant and yet so tender, made her pleasantly flustered. His touch was commanding her to lower her defenses, to give him everything. Her heart beat so fast she feared it would bounce right out of her chest. She peered down at his zipper, full with his erection. She already knew just how thick and long he was, and her inner thighs trembled with anticipation. Not that size mattered, but she certainly wouldn’t complain that he had a little extra.

  She swallowed and dropped her hand to his waist. Should she despise this man for turning her world upside down? Or should she reveal to him that they had created a life together? A sliver of her felt they were being tugged by her father’s strings, but even Carson couldn’t know that she and Nix would be this good together. So right.

  Fact was, her secret, that she was carrying his baby, could be a big reason why she was soaking wet right now. She’d read that a pregnant woman’s hormones made her crave sex more.

  He moaned and she felt his need, like she had a large engine contained under her thighs.

  His fingers were on her spine, lowering to her bottom where he made figure eights with his thumb. She could feel the sensation all through into her core, in every part of her sensitized body. Her breaths came in pants, incontrollable, just like the feelings in her. Her nipples were so tight and her clit pulsed in eagerness. There shouldn’t be any surprise that he did this to her. From the moment she saw him, she’d wanted him. Lord had she wanted him.

  “Let’s get these things off. Now,” he growled.

  She wasn’t sure how they managed it so smoothly, or maybe she was just wrapped up in the mood, but her jeans and panties were off and deposited somewhere in the cab, which she didn’t care where. All that mattered was that they were the only two people in the world, hidden by the trees outside and the fogged windows inside. This was exactly what she loved about country life.

  His hand came to her hip, his thumb making the same shape on her inner thigh, so close to her mons that one inch and he’d have been inflicting the same pleasurable havoc on her tingling lips. She wanted his touch there. She stared into his eyes and swore she saw something comparable to love, but before she could dissect it, he had his mouth on hers, taking possession, and she liked his assertiveness. He’d been right when he’d accused her of settling for weak men when what she needed was someone who could stand up to her, not dread her challenging personality. Her stubborn attitude has driven off a few along the way.

  She braced her hands on his shoulders and moved her bare bottom across his lap, reminding him that she was naked and ready.

  While he continued to kiss her, he moved his hand to her mons, but didn’t touch her yet she could feel the warmth of his palm. His tongue thrust in and out of her mouth, teasing her, telling a story of what they’d share soon. He pulled away, staring into her gaze as he moved his finger through her soaked folds.

  Melly’s breath hitched and she nibbled her bottom lip, riding the waves of the passion pouncing on her nerve endings. Their gazes held as he teased her clit, tugging the sensitive flesh while pleasure grew inside her. Her juice flowed, soaking her inner thighs, and she was almost embarrassed at how drenched she was for him. He didn’t seem to mind because his grunts of pleasure made her smile.

  He pressed his lips to hers, kissed her hard, then drew back, but only a mere inch. He held her gaze steady as he brought his hand up, glistening with her juices and sucked her from the digits. He moaned as if he were licking an ice cream cone and desire cascaded over her. His pupils dilated and his skin flushed. She imagined her eyes and skin did the same.

  “Your taste. A mixture of passion fruit and a splash of salt to bring out the sweetness.” A description she’d never heard before. With his moist fingers, he gripped her chin and brought her mouth to his. He shoved his tongue into her mouth and she could taste herself. She’d never been turned on more. He pulled back. “See. Sweet and savory. Heaven.”

  “Yes.” But she referred to his flavors.

  “You look so beautiful, baby. How do you feel?”

  “Like I’m on a cloud,”’ she admitted.

  He tipped her head, running his tongue along the slender line of her neck, pausing where her pulse beat rapidly. “My destiny is to make you feel like this each and every day.”

  She moaned deep in her chest, processing his promise.

  “Understand this much, sunshine. I’ll not let you go. Not without a fight.”

  ~~~**~~~
  Once the words were out, Nix understood there was no drawing them back or denying that he meant them. He’d lost his mind, but he didn’t care. He had also lost his heart…
  He was usually the one who had all the control, but not now, not with Melly.
  The rule of being a lawman meant keeping his head clear and he was good when it came to his career, but this was different. Melly wasn’t a criminal he could put behind a closed door and throw away the key. He wasn’t used to feeling such strong emotions, or vulnerable. He moved his hand to her slick mons again, wet and tasty. Nix skimmed his fingers against the slick lips and groaned at how the sweet cream covered his knuckles. She couldn’t deny that she wanted him. The proof was in the pudding, or the cream so to speak.
  The taste of her was on his lips and tongue, and like a skilled engineer, he thought of ways that he could place her so that he could bury his face into her sugary rapture. Pushing the lever on the steering wheel, it slid to the highest setting. Perfect. Grasping her thighs, he lifted her and settled her bottom on the wheel. “Spread your legs,” he demanded.
  “Nix?” she whispered.
  “Spread them.” She did and the scent of her excitement filled his nostrils.
  He placed his hands on her inner thighs and spread her wider. “I must have more of you,” he growled. Her gasp was music to his ears.
  He bought her foot up and she resisted him. “Trust me, baby,” he urged. She relaxed and he brought her leg over one shoulder, opening her completely for him. Her mons glistened, dewy and pink. The rosette of her ass puckered and was shiny from the trickle of juice from her mons.
  Unable to resist another second, he bent his head and suckled in the lush swollen lips, flattening his tongue against the tender flesh that
trembled. He continued to lick and suckle until he’d cleaned every dew drop and was so hard in his jeans that he wondered if he’d be bent for life. He didn’t want to pull away from the precious nectar, but he couldn’t hold back from claiming her another second. He reached down and hurriedly undid his buckle and zipper in record time and lifted his solid cock from the confines of the denim.
  Giving her one last lick from pucker to slit, he lifted her and brought her down onto his erection. She took him, slowly, adjusting to her tight body, and their bodies united.
  Chapter 13
  AFTER THE POST orgasmic high faded some and they were sitting in his truck, now dressed and silent, Melly thought about what he’d accused her of. That she was rebelling against her father, pushing away everyone who cared. Although hard to admit, she knew he was right to some extent. In her journey to be a better person, find her place in life, she had made a promise to her unborn child that she’d give him or her the best possible upbringing. To allow him or her to experience the memories she’d had on the ranch growing up.
  To do this, she needed Nix to know the truth. The time was right.
  “I have something to tell you.” She couldn’t look at him, couldn’t make eye contact because if she did she might lose her bravery. “There’s a reason why I can’t walk away from the ranch. This is not to rebel against my father. I did think I had to prove something to him, but that’s not even the real reason. I want my children to know what it’s like growing up and loving the horses, the land, having wonderful memories. That’s a precious gift.”
  Nix nodded. “I understand. You’ll give that to a child one day, maybe here, or maybe not. But home is where the heart is.”
  “My heart is here, Nix. And here.” She planted a hand against her stomach that was full of butterflies.
  His forehead creased. “What?”
  She searched for the right words, but the best thing was just to say it. “The night you and I slept together we, well…” She moistened her lips. “We created a child together.”
