His head sprang up, and he raced to the window. “You can open the window for me. Lunn turned off the window alarm this morning when Gaven cut a stinky one. I watched him open the window and then close it when the room smelled better. He didn’t reset the code.” Volker looked out the window. “I can see her.” He arched his back and kneaded the window seal.

Katarina walked to the window, and sure enough a black cat with white paws was looking up at Volker. He twitched his tail, and she relented. Within a second, she had the window open. Volker was lucky that there was no screen to remove. That would have taken several minutes to take off.

Before he left, he turned to her. “Leave it open so I can get back in.” With that said, he leapt for the closest branch on the tree outside her room. With graceful movements, he jumped from branch to branch. One final leap had him on the ground and approaching his happy prey. She grinned and went back to folding her clothes.

A bird flew past her window, and she watched as it flew to the highest branch she could see. Speaking of higher, she looked at the ceiling and wondered what was up there. Lunn had told her not to go to the third floor because the only things up there were manly stuff, and he didn’t want her to get hurt. Hurt how? She twisted her lips to the side as she wondered what kind of manly stuff was up there.

The sound of the doorbell drew her from her wonderings. Going downstairs, she looked through the peephole and saw a woman with red lips and big sunglasses. She wondered if the woman was a friend of Lunn’s, or maybe a work associate of his. Moving to the security panel, she put in the code he had given her. Opening the door, Katarina watched in horror as the woman pushed her way inside. Who was this bitch?

Going to Lunn’s liquor cabinet, she poured herself a drink then stared Katarina down. “Don’t get comfy here. Lunn is mine.” A bark came from the woman’s purse, and a small head sprang up. “It’s okay, Rosie Ann. She won’t be here long. Mama is going to make sure of it.”

Anger was starting to get hold of her. “I don’t know who you are, but you need to leave.”

  Rosie Ann growled.

Katarina looked at the little fur ball. It growled again. “Don’t forget to take your mutt with you.” She headed to the door and opened it wide.

A large man appeared and sneered at her. “You don’t belong here. We’ve been watching you.” His cruel brown eyes ran down the length of her body, and he licked his lips. “I see why Lunn is interested in you, but you don’t look tough enough to play his games.”

She was starting to see red. Pointing her finger out the door, she commanded, “Leave.”

The man looked at her wrist and grinned. “I see he hasn’t played with you yet.” His eyes narrowed. “Or maybe you don’t fight him. Do you just lie there and let him do all the work?”

Pulling her fist back, she was in the process of knocking him out when his hands rushed up and blocked hers then quickly caught her wrists.

He pulled her to him and sniffed her hair. “I like your claws. Maybe you’re better than I thought. Time will tell.” She tried to kick him, but he blocked again and pushed her up against the wall. “You don’t belong here. Lizzann does, and she will be back before you know it. When you are put out on the street, I’ll be by to pick you up.”

Going into beat-down mode, she screamed and tried to head-butt him. He dodged and laughed then took a sniff of her neck. “Sweet.” He tightened his hold on her and licked the side of her face.

Her anger drained away as fear shot through every cell in her body. He was too big for her to fight off, and the woman with him wasn’t going to save her. Her whole body started to shake.

Laughter rumbled from his chest. “I can smell your fear.” He licked her ear and whispered, “I see why he wants you. You’re feisty, yet you melt quickly. Sweet as jalapeño ice cream on a hot sidewalk.”

“Let’s go, Devon. I found out what I needed to know. I’m way better than her.” The dog barked, as if in agreement.

Devon sniffed her again and moaned lightly. He pushed away from her and grinned menacingly. “I’ll see you later.”

Katarina mumbled a spell, “Powers that be, make them leave.”

Lizzann’s red lips twisted. “You’re a strange one. Tell Lunn I came by, and that I expect him to get rid of you real soon.” She took her sunshades off, and her mean brown eyes raked up and down Katarina. “Rosie Ann and I expect you to be homeless in no time.” Lizzann looked at her dog and rubbed its head. “Isn’t that right, baby? She can’t stay here. No, she can’t.”

Dread settled in her belly. These people were truly insane. Like don’t fuck with them kind of insane. The coldness of their eyes gave her the impression they would gladly harm anybody they didn’t like.

Lizzann turned her crazy attention back to Katarina. “Don’t forget to give Lunn my message, little freak.”

The twisted look in her eyes made Katarina shiver. She didn’t stop shaking until she saw them drive away. After closing and locking the front door, she reentered the security code. A moment later, she dropped onto the couch and buried her face in her hands. The thought of what they could have done to her had her shaking all over again. She’d learned a valuable lesson. Never open the door to strangers.

Devon had said they’d been watching her. Katarina’s heart lodged in her throat. Could they be the ones who’d trashed her place? The frightening realization that she was being stalked chilled her to the bone.

“You didn’t handle that too well.”

She looked around and spotted Volker sitting on the stairs licking his paw. “How long have you been there? Why didn’t you help me out?”

“I’ve been here since the minute you foolishly let them in. I didn’t help because your life was not in danger. I also needed to see what you’d do on your own.” He swished his tail and stared at her intently. “Your spell was late in coming, and it sucked. It wasn’t clear, and you mumbled it. When I got turned into a cat, the spell was crystal clear and thunderous.”

She rhythmically tapped her knee to release some of her pent-up energy. “Thanks for the info.” Although she didn’t care for his sarcastic tone, she took his words to heart.

Volker’s ears perked up, and he sniffed the air. “I’ll be back in a bit. She’s calling me again. Don’t let anyone else in the house.” His last words came out as a command.

With that tone, she believed he was a real warrior. A bossy one.

Remembering Devon had licked her, she rushed to the downstairs restroom and splashed her face and neck with soap and water. When she was done drying her skin she pulled out a clean towel and took the dirty one upstairs to the laundry room. With two fingers, she dropped it into the dirty towel basket. A shiver snaked up her spine as she turned and left the room. That had been a close one, too close.

Mind whirling, she wondered if Lunn was really friends with those people. He seemed too smart for that. She’d have to act like everything was fine when they came home tonight. When she gave Lunn Lizzann’s message, she’d watch his reaction closely. Crossing her fingers, she hoped he wasn’t in some crazy relationship with that nutty bitch.

  Chapter Eight

Gaven walked into Lunn’s house and dropped a few movies onto the coffee table. Tonight was going to be their first movie night. Lunn thought they all needed a little more getting to know you time. He agreed, but was afraid to get too close to Katarina. She was a fine manager, and he didn’t want to lose her. A picture of her curvy body entered his mind. His blood sang in his veins. She wasn’t the only educated person on the earth, and that technically made her replaceable. He’d have to give that some more thought.

Movement from the stairs caught his attention, and he turned to see who was there. Katarina smiled at him, and his heart melted. He loved her smile. His balls rolled and heated up every time he saw her. She was so deep under his skin he didn’t think a surgeon could get her out. Truth be told, he didn’t want her out. He wanted her in his bed for a very long time. Maybe he should sta
rt looking for a new manager. She took what looked like a fortifying breath and walked over to him and picked up one of the movies. The scent of flowers enveloped him, and he knew he needed a new manager. He was going to die if he didn’t touch and taste her soon.

“Aw, you got a chick flick for me.” Violet eyes stared up at him.

His cock jerked, but his jeans held it at bay. “Anything for you, honey.” Damn he loved her eyes. When he took her, he planned on looking into her eyes the whole time. Whoa, when had he decided to take her?

The doorbell rang, and Katarina jumped then stepped closer to Gaven. She reminded him of a scared kitten. That was a new reaction for her. “I’ll get it.” He walked over to the door and reached out to open it.

She jumped in front of the door and whispered, “Look through the peephole first. Those crazy people may be back.”

He took in her pale skin and wide eyes. What the hell had happened to her? Wanting to keep her calm, he did as she requested. Looking down into her eyes, he whispered, “It’s just the pizza delivery guy. Lunn ordered a pizza then got called out to see a house. He asked me to watch for the pizza.”

Katarina turned and peeked out the hole. Her shoulders dropped, and she stepped back.

After paying for the pizza, he raised a brow and ordered her to follow him into the kitchen. Once there, he put the food down and then turned all his attention on her. “What was that all about?”

“Some bad people came to the house today a—”

The sound of the front door opening and closing halted their conversation. Stepping out of the kitchen, he looked to see who’d come in. He relaxed when he saw Lunn. “We have a problem.”

Lunn set his keys down on the kitchen counter and looked them both over. “What kind of problem?”

Cutting his gaze to Katarina, he said, “We’ll let her tell us.” He started plotting ways to up Lunn’s security system as Katarina stared sadly at Lunn. What the hell had happened?

Lunn’s eyes took in Katarina’s nervous stance. He walked up to her and took her hand in his. “What happened?”

Katarina pulled from Lunn’s grasp, wrung her hands and then took a deep breath. “This is embarrassing. I did something stupid today. I opened the door to strangers, and they pushed their way in.”

  They both looked her over.

Lunn’s body stiffened, and he demanded, “Did they hurt you?”

Her eyes glazed for a second, and Gaven watched as she took a shuddering breath. That broke his heart. Anger started boiling in his belly.

Katarina looked up at Lunn. “They didn’t hurt me physically.” She cringed and shuddered. “The big guy, Devon, just pushed me up against the wall and licked my face and ear. I couldn’t even see him at first. I guess he was hiding. He was scary, but so was the woman with him. She’s the one I opened the door for. Her name was Lizzann.”

Lunn scooped Katarina up and set her down on the counter. He noted the way Lunn’s arms caged her in. Looking into her eyes, he stated, “Devon will pay for touching you. Right now I need to know what that crazy bitch said to you.”

Gaven watched relief soften her eyes. What was this all about?

She stared back at Lunn. Her hands moved to his arms. “She said that she expected you to get rid of me soon. That she belonged here. Devon said the same thing. He said they’d been watching me for a while, and that he’d come by and pick me up when you tossed me out.” Katarina’s hands tightened. “Were they telling the truth? Are you in a relationship with her?”

“No. Lizzann and her brother came to my old club a couple of times with a friend. I didn’t think they were the type of people we wanted in the club, so I did a scene with her once to test a theory I had. Let’s just say she was as crazy as I thought she’d be. She came here once with that same friend when I threw a party. After that I made sure her friend was no longer a member of our club.” Lunn turned to look at Gaven. “I need you to call some of your friends and see what they know about Lizzann, Devon, and the B&Es that happened to Katarina.”

“Sure thing. You said ‘old club.’ Did you finally sell your part of the club?” Gaven knew Lunn had been needing a change and had been debating selling out.

“Yes. I signed the paperwork recently. With this new development, I’m glad I have more time to spend at home.”

  “I’m happy for you.”

“So am I. Why didn’t you tell us?” she asked. A frown wrinkled her brow.

“I was waiting until I was used to no longer being a club owner. It was a big part of my life for a long time. Now I have other priorities,” Lunn answered honestly and then turned to stare at Katarina. “We’ll make sure they don’t touch you again. How are you handling it?”

“Better now that you two are here. I shouldn’t have answered the door.”

Lunn’s body tensed. “No, you shouldn’t have. Don’t ever do it again. Devon will wish he was dead if he ever touches you again, and so will any other man that means you harm. Have you noticed anything missing from your things?”

“A few pictures, a pair of panties, a pair of shoes, and a scarf. I don’t think it means much, though, because I’ve moved a lot lately.”

Those items didn’t sound so innocent to him. Gaven knew what he needed to do. Stepping out of the kitchen, he went upstairs to make his call. He’d make sure Devon paid for touching Katarina. Nobody except Lunn touched his woman.

  * * * *

Katarina felt at home caged in Lunn’s arms. Her heart had done a summersault in her chest when Lunn had told her about Lizzann. Deep down she’d known neither of her men would go for a crazy woman like Lizzann. Being so close to Lunn was making her body tingle with desire. Devon’s actions today made her realize how unpredictable life could be. If you didn’t grab what you wanted today, it could be gone tomorrow.

Butterflies fluttered in her stomach, but she couldn’t let them stop her. After a nervous lick of her lips, she looked at Lunn’s perfectly chiseled lips. Leaning forward, she pressed her lips to his. He didn’t move a muscle. She lightly kissed his firm lips, loving the feel and taste of them.

She was so into exploring his lips and tasting him that she didn’t notice at first that he wasn’t kissing her back. Upon that realization, her stomach knotted, and she pulled back. Not looking at him, she mumbled embarrassedly, “I’m sorry. I…I shouldn’t have—” To her utter horror, she saw Gaven leaning against the doorframe.

“Well, well. What’s going on in here?”

“About time you came back. My control was about to snap, but I don’t feel like eating alone so I’m glad you finally arrived,” he said to Gaven.

Feeling like a kid caught with its hand in the cookie jar, she scooted back on the counter, trying to get farther away from Lunn. Her lust-scrambled brain couldn’t tell if Lunn was talking about eating her or the pizza. In case it was the pizza, she said, “I’m sorry, boss. I—”

“You’re fired.” Gaven’s voice was husky with desire.

She whipped her head to look at him. His brown eyes were dark with passion. Had he been standing there for a bit? Oh God, he’d just fired her. “No need to fire me. I promise not to touch Lunn or you.” She wasn’t sure she could keep that promise if she stayed here with them much longer.

“I think your mouth is cashing checks your body can’t pay. I see how much you want Lunn. I’ve also seen the way you look at me. Those pretty violet eyes of yours have been begging us to taste you from day one.” Gaven stepped in close and then leaned forward and took her lips in a passionate kiss. With one hand at the nape of her neck, he kissed her soundly. Their tongues sparred, each thrusting in for a taste then retreating. He tasted like bubble gum. He must have been chewing some recently. It tasted good on him. So good. She clutched at his shirt and sank her tongue into his mouth for another taste.

She was gasping and trembling by the time he leaned back.

“Now that he’s here I’ll gladly give you what you want. Holding my passion in check was one of the h
ardest things I’ve ever done.” Lunn pulled her in closer and cupped her head in his large hands, trapping her as he explored her mouth hungrily. The rake of his tongue across hers had her clit throbbing even harder. He tasted of hot, unique male. She would gladly nibble his mouth forever. His right hand moved down her back and settled on her hips and then tugged her closer. The feel of his hard body pressed to hers sent a jolt of electricity through her. Grasping his shoulders, she opened wider for him. Groaning, he explored every inch of her mouth as he held her tightly to him. When he inched back, she wanted to grab him up and demand he continue.

Lunn was breathing heavily as he fixed one of her problems. “You can work for me. I don’t have a problem making love to my personal assistant. Life is short. I want to make mine as pleasurable as possible.” He stroked her cheek and nuzzled her neck. “We both want you. Can you handle that?” After placing a kiss to her shoulder, he pulled back and stared into her eyes.

Moisture eased from her heated core when she looked from Lunn’s dark-blue eyes to Gaven’s darkened brown eyes. They both wanted her, and she had been waiting for years to have them. Nothing would stop her from accepting both of them. “Yes, I want both of you.”

Lunn was moving in for another kiss when the doorbell rang. When he eased from between her legs, she cursed the person at the door’s bad timing.

Gaven shifted his erection to a more comfortable position in his jeans and opened the door. He grinned at his friend. “Joe, how’s it going? Did you get a break in Katarina’s case?” He stepped back so Joe could come in.

Lunn and Katarina walked into the living room and waited anxiously to hear the news.

“Katarina, this is Joe Martinez. He’s the detective working on your case.”

“Hi.” She smiled and reached out her hand.

Joe took her hand and gave it a quick shake. “Hello. It’s nice to meet you, Katarina.”

Lunn shook Joe’s hand and then pumped him for information. “Did you find anything out?”
