Payton (Dreamcatchers Romantic Suspense Series Book 3)

Keila broke away from Jason’s embrace and kicked fiercely at a pile of sand. “When we find her, I get to kill her.”
“Is it just her? Did you see anyone else?” Reece cut in.
“That’s all I know except for what she looks like. This woman—you’ll know her when you see her. Her eyes suck you in, but there’s only evil in their depths.”
“You have to come with us, Payton.” Emily grabbed her hand. “Please. We need you and I want to make sure you stay safe.”
Payton looked between the girls. She was no longer scared of them, but that didn’t mean she was ready to lay her life in their hands. Payton may have fought back her demons, but the battle wasn’t over.
She looked back at Cole. Everything about the man screamed safe and home to her. Could she trust these women as much as she trusted him? Payton let her light free and moved it to surround them, but it wasn’t Emily or Keila’s thoughts that flooded her mind. It was Lainey’s.
Lainey, standing just inside the juice bar, handing a customer their order. The vision came quickly, tumbling through her mind. As Lainey looked over at them, her eyes first landed on Keila, surrounded by a red, passionate glow. Lainey’s eyes moved to Emily and the glow turned orange. Lastly, Lainey turned her eyes to Payton and a haze of blue filled Payton’s mind.
Lainey. Payton had always felt rejuvenated, happy, in her presence. Apparently it hadn’t just been the blueberry smoothie. That was clear as fuck now.
Payton turned back to the women. “I’m sorry, but I’m not going with you.”
“But—” Keila said, but Payton continued.
“I’ll tell you everything I know, and we’ll keep in touch, but I need to be here.” She stepped toward Cole, placing a hand on his chest, and he pulled her in close. “This is my home now. I’m needed here.”
Emily placed a hand on Keila’s arm. “Okay, but please, don’t do anything stupid. I’ll be checking in on you.” She gave Payton a sad smile before embracing her in a gentle hug, then she took Keila’s hand and melted away. Jason exchanged cell numbers with Cole before the men quickly followed.
Cole kissed her. “I’m proud of you.”
Payton smiled and pulled her light back inside her mind. “I’ll be right back.” She walked into the juice bar.
“Hey there!” Lainey was smiling over to her.
“Hey.” Payton hesitated. The colors had seemed so bright, so vivid, in her mind. But did Lainey know she was special, or was she as clueless as Payton had been? No, she wouldn’t freak her friend out just yet. She’d watch her, be with her, tell her just enough. And if she was right, maybe she’d be able to save Lainey when Lainey’s own monster in the basement came calling.
“What’s up?” Lainey asked.
Payton smiled. “Nothing important. Can you take five? I need to talk to you.”
