Omega's Sanctuary

“When can we name them?” Edward asked, nuzzling the neck of his fated mate, tracing his mark with his tongue as they lounged in the grass coated in morning dew. It was summertime, and the forest was teaming with life and abundance. Edward was still uncomfortable being completely naked, so he still had a pair of black boxers on. His lover was completely nude along with the children and the other members of their pack. His omega still required monthly blood transfusions to hold back his symptoms, but was otherwise healthy. After a little probing and a lot of talking, the whole pack agreed to clinical trials on the condition they wouldn’t be forced to integrate with humans or other shifters. That was fine with Edward, their de facto leader though he refused to admit it. The A.S.A. was bummed because it was a missed publicity campaign, but agreed to the terms to keep the peace. Edward grinned as he watched Augustus Cato and Idamae weave through the crowd, his wife obviously scandalized but nonetheless excited to be in the presence of other shifters, her husband drunk and merry. Forming alliances with the Shee Kaax sleuth of Ursidae transformare shifters was a welcomed blessing. Though bears tended to stay to themselves, the less fighting that went on between them the better. Plus, Cato was still reaching out to other transformare to forge new alliances. After all, shifter unity was the only thing holding back human domination.

Edward grinned as Siku smiled up at him coyly before nipping at his ear, whispering, “When the time is right, we’ll know.”

“Hmmm… I guess we should let them decide what they want to be called. But we already claim they’re boys! Why not give them a first name and let them change it when they’re older? I’m telling you, they’d love the name Xolotl and Alonso!” Edward pleaded his case, but knew Siku wasn’t buying it. His father’s name held symbolic meaning, a spiritual continuation of his decimated pack. Xolotl was one of his mother’s favorite old world gods. When Siku and he had a female cub, Edward was determined to name her Axochitl, too. Technically, after their unofficial wedding ceremony biting each other’s tails and running in a circle, Edward had become Qiġñiq Edward Reyes-Lobo. His name was a mouthful, but Qiġñiq Xolotl and Alonso? In his mind, it was perfect!

“Sssh. Watch or you’ll miss it. Savaiññiq is preparing them for the naming ceremony. Then, we can bestow more names on them. So, watch my fated. Watch and listen.” The pack, including Cato and Idamae fell silent as Savaiññiq raised her arms in the air. Their first-born cub mimicked her movements, then pointed skyward, khaki-brown skin and curly black hair absorbing the light as he babbled, golden eyes wide with wonder.

“What do you see, my sons?” She asked. The sky was clear, a warm blue hue.

But instead of naming the sun, or even a cloud, he shouted clear as day, “Uvluġiaq!” He clutched his small fist and opened it repeatedly, the way his father Siku did when he sang “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” a lullaby he learned from Edward.

His brother followed soon after, exclaiming, “Tatqiq!” He held his hands together over his head, mimicking the moon as his father Edward did when he sang “Luna Lunera,” his parents unofficial wedding song. His silver eyes sparkled with joy.

Both boys fell over laughing. Then, their bodies went rigid and curled into tight balls. Slowly, their flesh was replaced by fur. Their paws and bellies were bright white mixed with golden yellow like Edward’s, and their faces, backs, and tails jet black like Siku’s. They were a perfect blend of their parents, unique cross-breeds of a subspecies all but extinct, and a pack on the rebound.

Savaiññiq beamed down at them ear to ear, releasing a loud howl as she shifted in the blink of an eye. Edward leaped to his feet as Siku did the same, eighteen other howls joining theirs. Cato thumped his chest and Idamae clapped, everyone swept up in the emotion. The pack and their friends danced into the night as the full moon rose high in the sky and the Qiġñiq pack was reborn.

  AFTERWORD

Thank you for reading Omega’s Sanctuary! I’m by no means an expert in indigenous languages or any language other than English for that matter. So, if any readers out there see an error, don’t feel shy about emailing me. That said, I’ve been a fan of omegaverse for a long time, but wanted to explore omegaverse in a world where shapeshifters are also present. When the common AβΩ (Alpha/Beta/Omega) classification scheme also includes literal werewolves, I’ve always wondered how society may react. I hope you enjoyed this gay winter fling as much as I did writing it! Until next time!
