Valentine Kisses: A Kiss to Last a Lifetime
Page 39
He cut her off. “I'm sure a beautiful girl like you has had lots of men give you gifts of flowers and candy, but I wanted to do something special, just for you, book nerd. ”
She was silent. Her heart was racing.
Hank just said he thinks I'm beautiful.
“It’s obviously a book,” she said, pretending she was disappointed.
“What's better than flowers and candy?.” Hank grinned.
Charlie grinned back at him. She couldn't stop smiling, especially after he used his nickname for her. She tore away the paper and found a dog-eared used library book. She turned it over and read the title out-loud.
“The Clue in the Diary,” Charlie said. “I know this book. This is the one when we meet Ned Nickerson for the first time. You’ve been talking to my fairy godmother.”
“Maybe,” he said mysteriously. “She thinks Ned and I might have a few things in common.”
“Ned was my first book boyfriend.”
“Really? And here I was just starting to like the guy.”
“He’s no competition for you.”
"Really?"
Charlie nodded. The way Hank was looking at her made her feel beautiful.
“Maybe you're just starting to realize the men of your imagination aren’t the only ones who want you. Maybe there’s one in real life waiting for you to notice him.”
“I’ve noticed,” Charlie said. “I really like you too. I’m just afraid.”
“I’m scared to death,” he said.
“Really?”
He nodded. “Yep. But I think you may be worth the risk. So I'm willing to put my heart on the line. What do you say, Charlie? Will you be my Valentine? I know a place that's having a really good party.”
“Yes,” she laughed. “I will be your Valentine. As long as you agree to be mine.”
Hank stood and pulled Charlie up to her feet. He held her face in his hands as his thumb swept along her jawline. His touch caused tingles of pleasure to radiate out throughout her body.
Charlie looked up into his eyes. A real man was looking back at her. Steady Dependable. And so handsome.
Sweet Baby James!
He was better than any of her book boyfriends.
She could hardly breathe as Hank slowly brought his mouth down on hers. His kiss was so sweet. So tender. So soft.
“Hank?” Charlie whispered against his lips. “I have to tell you something. I think I've changed my mind.”
“What?” he asked. He tucked a strand of her red-gold hair behind her ear so he was looking straight into her eyes. His intense gaze made her feel fluttery but she grinned up at him anyway.
“I fucking love Valentine’s Day.”
