I take a deep breath to keep the tears at bay. She dangles the keys again and winks. “I love you, Tessa. Thank you for always being there for me.”
“I love you too, and don’t worry, you’re going to pay me back with my wedding this summer.”
“Reese.” I hear my dad’s voice filled with awe. He stops to stand next to me. “You look beautiful,” he says, blinking hard a few times, battling his own tears.
“Thanks, Dad.”
“Tessa, won’t be long and this will be you.”
“I can’t wait.” She grins at him.
“You ready to do this?” Dad asks.
“Yes.” I nod and slip my hand through his offered arm.
“I’ll see you down there,” Tessa says, pushing open the double doors. She begins her slow trek down the aisle.
My eyes scan the room, taking it all in. They land on a figure in the back row on the left-hand side of the room. The bride’s side. Cooper. His eyes lock on mine, and I can see the pain and sorrow written all over his face. He mouths, “I love you,” and I feel a slight tremble in my knees. I will never forget my best friend sitting in the back row of my wedding, looking as though he’s at a funeral. The look on his face will forever haunt me.
Agony.
