The Terrorist's Holiday

“That’ll keep him awake forever.”

David nodded and they turned to go back down.

In the distance, Hamid drove off toward New York. He and El Yacoub had been silent ever since the great disappointment. They waited, hoping that things had just been thrown back a few hours, but nothing happened.

“In the morning, we’ll try to find out what went wrong,” the Claw finally said.

  “And then?”

  “We’ll begin again.”

Hamid nodded. He understood the Claw’s fanaticism, but he recalled Nessim and Yusuf vibrantly alive. He thought about the times they spent together in the Middle East, and he mourned the death of their childhoods. He began to feel very old, way beyond his years.

Rabbi Kaufman came out of the synagogue basement with a group of his followers. The young men stood beside him as he hesitated on the walk. He looked out across the road at a dark alley. Many of the men followed his gaze and stared with him, remembering.

“Stay together,” he said. “Think only that there is danger and death lurking.” Some of them nodded with hate; some nodded with fear.

  “Shalom,” he said.

  “Shalom,” they replied.

In the distance, a police siren wailed. They all turned to listen, wondering for whom it cried.
