Every. Single. Morning.
And one of those mornings, a few days after their mating, he’d woken to the sight of mating marks around his wrists. A sign of the god’s approval of their joining.
They’d even managed to sneak in a trip to Earth, strictly against orders of course, to recover the contents of Jac’s house. Her belongings, things handed down to her from family that no longer lived, meant a lot to her… As soon she’d mentioned them, he’d decided that they need to be recovered.
Which was why he was now standing in the middle of a room filled with dusty boxes.
Curiosity got the better of him when she didn’t answer, and he lifted the lid on the nearest one. A soft package was the first thing he came to. Carefully, he unwrapped the layers around it to find his hands filled with white silky material.
It was a small dress.
Confused, he held it up. It was old, obviously handmade, but didn’t look that valuable. It had to be sentimental, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. As far as he knew the only white dresses human females wore were wedding dresses, but this wouldn’t fit an adult female. It would barely fit a baby.
“Ahh… I see you couldn’t resist taking a look.”
Jac’s voice at the door made him look up, and he smiled instinctively at the sight of his mate leaning in the door frame.
“No. I hope you don’t mind?” he asked quickly, not sure if he’d stumbled on some hitherto unknown human taboo. By and large, Jac’s race was still a complete mystery to him, even more so now that he was getting to know her.
“No. I don’t mind at all,” she said with a smile, pushing off from the door frame and walking toward him. “Actually, you finding that leads me into something else that I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
“Oh? What’s that?” he asked, still confused by the little dress. “And what is this? It can’t be one of your wedding dresses… But if you want one I’ll get you one,” he offered quickly, eager to do whatever it took to keep his mate happy.
“We can talk about a wedding, if you like. After.” She took the dress from him and laid it out carefully across one of the boxes. “But this isn’t a wedding dress. It’s something else.”
“After. After what?”
She smiled as she settled herself against him, reaching up on her tiptoes to press a kiss against his lips.
“After I get my figure back. Apparently having a baby tends to ruin it a little. For a while anyway.” She leaned back to look into his stunned face. “It’s a christening gown. Now I’m not religious, but it’s also cute for a naming ceremony… Whether it’s a human one or a Latharian one.”
“Are you…” He couldn’t get the words out. His jaw moved, his lips were open but no sound emerged.
She reached up, put two fingers under his jaw and closed his mouth.
“Yes, Rynn. I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a daddy.”
