— Aspen —
“Aspen! I need your help. Please.” Yara’s voice is a whirl of whispered devastation slicing through my heart. I stand up from my chair, instantly on edge.
Even if I’m wrapped up in a meeting, I have to take her call and find out what’s wrong. I stalk out of the room, ignoring my pain in the ass supervisor.
“What’s wrong, Yara? Tell me,” I ask, making sure my voice is steady in an effort to give her some form of support.
“Someone killed my parents, Aspen. I have nowhere to go, and now I’m pregnant. I never should have gone to that masked party at the new club downtown. Then I never would have met Luigi. And now he’s here. He’s back. He must have put something in my drink that night. I didn’t want to...I couldn’t do anything...he...I don’t want to…but he took what he wanted anyway…I couldn’t—” A sob rips from her before she starts again, “He took my ID…knew where I lived. He has these crazy eyes. Luigi is here. He raped me, Aspen...I don’t know what to do, it’s—”
There’s rough, manly cursing as Yara’s scream pierces through the phone.
“What’s wrong? Hang in there, Yara. I’m coming,” I rush out my words while my promise is half a lie as I’m not even in the country.
A man growls out some more curses before the call disconnects.
“Yara,” I gasp. “Fuck, no. No, no, no.”
I check the screen and see the call has indeed disconnected. I try to call her but it goes straight to voicemail. My heart is beating in my ears and I curse myself for being out of the country. I’m miles and miles away from my one and only friend.
Right when I’m about to call the police in the US to have an officer swing by her house to check, there’s a clearing of a throat drawing my attention.
I don’t have to look up to see it’s Lanshes, my asshole supervisor. “Asp, we need you back in the meeting. Now. Whatever you are doing will have to wait.”
Asp. I hate it when he shortens my name. Hell, I hate everything that comes out of his egocentric mouth. But I can’t snap at him or he will turn on me and make things harder.
“You’re right, I’ll be right there. Sorry, I really have to pee. But then we’ll discuss how we can assess the hostage situation.”
His eyes narrow. “After you walked out, I decided we will go in tonight and free the hostage. You’ll have time on your hands soon enough to deal with your personal stuff and I can get back to my case involving Shea. But first we will handle the hostage situation tonight so we can be on a plane back to the US at midnight.”
I grind my teeth. Asshole. It’s crazy to go in without information, dammit. But I can’t snap at him or he’ll bench me and then go ahead with his decision anyway, risking others in the process. Others being Dale in this case since he’s my only other colleague here.
And what Lanshes is suggesting means we will go in blind. Lanshes is so full of himself he probably thinks he can get away with headbutting a bullet. I once loved my job but this guy makes me want to quit.
“I’ll be right there,” I manage to sweetly reply and head for the ladies’ room.
Once inside I quickly make the call and try to get the police to swing by. When I hear back from the police, they tell me her apartment is empty and there is no sign of a struggle or anything. I have to wait to report her missing since there isn’t any indication she’s actually in any trouble, though I know it in my gut something is very wrong.
The meeting with Dale and Lanshes spirals to insanity and the promise I made Yara is yet again postponed. But, dammit...hang in there, Yara. Even if I have to go to hell and back...I’m coming for you, no matter what.
CHAPTER ONE
Present day
— Aspen —
Firm hands have my hips in a punishing grip. Repulsion flows through my veins but I manage to shove it down. Focus, Aspen, and it will all be over within a few breaths. Sliding up the skimpy, black mini skirt I’m wearing, I prepare myself to give me some more room to work with.
He’s staring at my bra covered breasts and says, “My cock is going to rip your tight pussy open when I make you ride me. But first I’ll make you suck me off. Get rid of the bra. Show me your breasts before you get on your knees.”
Like hell I will get on my knees for you, asshole. My heart is pounding in my ears and yet my breathing is steady. I was trained to do these things and it has been part of my job for years. Though, this isn’t a job, and yet it’s the moment I’ve been working up to for the last few weeks.
My right hand slides to my bra. I let the fingers of my other hand tease the cleft of my breasts to make sure his attention is fixed on that spot. In one easy swoop I take out the underwire I’ve sharpened—altered it into a weapon—and I slice his throat before he even realizes the breath he just took was his final one.
Gurgles fill the room. His eyes are wide and locked on mine as I watch the life drain right out of him. Blood is pulsing out of his severed jugular and I take a moment to make sure the job I did was thorough—there can’t be any room for mistakes. Confident enough, I have one final thing to do since there’s something he needs to know.
I lean in and whisper in a harsh voice, “You fucked with the wrong bitch, asshole. Yara’s revenge is bittersweet, don’t you think? Even if she didn’t slice your throat herself, the result is the same.”
A few more seconds pass before his life on this fucked-up planet is over. I slowly step away from the body and glance down at my slick, crimson covered hands. I’m still holding the underwire of my bra in my hand and I can’t believe it worked. I did it. Well, half of it since I still have to find the button of the safe room Luigi locked-up my friend, Yara, in. A friend this asshole here kidnapped and kept hidden for almost three months.
I was out of the country when she suddenly disappeared right after she told me she was pregnant by a guy who took her against her will. It took me weeks to find out a way to find and end the asshole who was responsible. He wasn’t some lowlife scum, and my hands were tied due to my job. I had to endure the process of quitting while healing from an injury, all of it adding more time until I c
ould set my plan into motion.
I knew exactly where Yara was but I couldn’t get to her; she was too well hidden by Luigi. And to complicate matters, the asshole holding her, Luigi Rusposito, is the son of Shea Rusposito, a mob boss who controls half the city. This little technicality makes Luigi untouchable. Well, he was untouchable. Seeing his heart stopped beating at the lack of blood after I sliced his throat.
I’d say the whole untouchable angle was a load of crap since it was quite easy to get underneath his defenses and get him alone in his office. I have been planning it for months and the timing was perfect as well. Add the fact I also have a body in the alley ready to take the blame as the killer, I’d say up till now everything is going smoothly.
I hear the door swing open. I spin on my heels and face the new threat and mentally curse myself for not leaving the room a few seconds ago. I freaking jinxed myself by thinking everything is going smoothly up till now. I knew the door was unlocked because Luigi always keeps two bodyguards near, though he sent them away to get a drink because he thought I wasn’t a threat, and he could get his dick wet without any interference; he thought wrong.
A guy wearing a tweed flat hat, a leather cut with patches, and black jeans steps inside followed by two other burly looking bikers. Shit. I’ve read Luigi’s father meets with an MC sometimes, though their connection isn’t clear. I did notice some of them were in the main room of the stripper bar, but didn’t think anything of it.
The way the guy in the front holds his body—while shooting a piercing glare from underneath the hat—makes it seem like he owns the world. He looks very capable of handling everything himself, though he also radiates the vibe of letting others kill and do his dirty work; the outer resemblance of a vicious leader who oversees everything and only gets his hands bloody when needed.
I know he’s not Shea, the father of the dude I just murdered in cold blood. No. Standing in front of me is none other than Kinney Fallon. MC President. Ruthless. Deadly. Unforgiving. And known for trading in lethal favors. When you’ve hit rock bottom and have nowhere to go, he will give you one single option. Though you have to return the favor, no questions asked, and no knowledge upfront of what the favor you vow to do for him is. It’s like selling your soul to the devil.
And with his eyes set on me, there’s no mistake; I’m staring into the eyes of the devil. On his right is his second in command—Vice President of the Fallon Brothers—Nics, otherwise known as Nicholas. Brass knuckles is what this guy is known for. And on Kinney’s right is his enforcer, Kier. That man likes his knives and carries at least three at all times.
I never go into a job without knowing every detail and every connection. Shit. This isn’t a job and I quit a few weeks ago. Focus, Aspen. I need to rescue Yara and at least get her out safe and alive. With the knowledge I have on the guy in front of me, I think of the only way to make it still possible for me to save Yara.
“Kinney Fallon, I need one favor and in return I’ll give you two,” I tell him and let my eyes slide to his enforcer and then to his VP before they land back on Kinney.
I have to keep an eye on the other two. Kinney might be the president—and just as, if not more, lethal as the other two guys in the room—but I’ve read this man only dirties his hands when he absolutely has no other choice. He has no conscience, and no family. The two names inked on his forearm are a vivid reminder. Mackenzie, and Mackyla. Twin sisters who both died in a car accident a little over eight years ago.
“Let’s hear it, little fluff,” Kinney says, a hint of his Irish accent shimmering through his voice, reminding me this man’s background is a direct link to the Irish mafia.
Yet there isn’t a direct link to tie him to any mob business, he either keeps it well hidden or just fully focuses on his MC. Another thing the government hasn’t been able to tie any dirty things to, even though it’s clear this man isn’t an honest businessman at all; he just manages to hide his dirty shit well.
And seriously, little fluff? My hair might be a short bob and standing on end due to the whole “fluffing it up with my hands to shake my tits act” before I killed Luigi, but I am by no means a little fluff. I could react one of two ways, though in the end there is no choice. Playing coy doesn’t work since I’m still holding the weapon I killed Luigi with.
Bitchy attitude it is. I roll my eyes and state, “Give me your word you will get the woman Luigi was holding hostage safely out of here. Tell her I said ‘six clovers.’ And for fuck’s sake, call me little fluff again and I’ll cut off your beans and bacon and turn them into a mess of fluffy red goo.”
The corner of his mouth twitches but his stare keeps the hard and cold look. His enforcer moves slightly to the side, catching my attention. Dammit, Kinney is too much of a distraction.
“Come at me, Kier. I’m ready to fight head on, all three of you for that matter. I didn’t even break a sweat killing Luigi,” I taunt and widen my stance as I grip the metal weapon I’m still holding.
Kinney clicks his tongue in disapproval. “Now, now, saucy one. Call me intrigued. You’ve been caught red-handed at a murder scene. Another intriguing matter since Luigi is, or was, a hard one to reach. Believe me, a lot of others before you have tried and I even dare say his time was up. It’s actually why we were paying him a visit. Tell me your name and I’ll grant you your favor, earning me two of yours in return.”
I narrow my eyes. “Maybe we need to back this up a little, since you just mentioned others have tried to kill Luigi, and it’s actually why you were paying him a visit. You might say I already did you a favor.”
Kinney slowly shakes his head. “The killing part might have been the hardest part, yet the after effect is a hard hit to walk away from.”
Now it’s my turn to shake my head. “All taken care of. There’s a dead guy in the alley out back. All I need to do is dirty him up with some of Luigi’s blood to make him fit the bill. His killer is dead and a solid tie with motive along with it.”
“Explain,” Kinney snaps.
Kier shifts and inches closer, making me growl, “Try me and see who has the longest breath.”
“Kier.” Kinney’s voice is a mere whisper but it’s enough to call his guard dog off. His gaze holds mine when he says, “Are you holding the underwire of your bra? You didn’t even give the fucker a glimpse of those tits before you killed him?”
I simply shrug. “There was no need. I like to do a job with minimum distraction and in a short timeframe. Prolonging the situation leaves room for errors, errors can get you killed. Needless to say; can we speed this up?”
“I’m going to need a name if we’re going to exchange favors. I like to know who I’m dealing with,” Kinney says but it’s Nics who takes out his phone, ready to run a check to see who they’re dealing with.
Dammit. They can’t know or I’m as good as dead.
“We will do the whole ‘getting to know you better’ when we’re out of here. For now, all you need to know is the fact that I’m good for the favors I will grant you.” I keep my eyes locked with Kinney.
“Not good enough,” he grunts and he suddenly seems bored.
I grind my teeth and finally snap, “My first name is Aspen. I’ll add another favor to the other two I promised you for compensation. As soon as I know my friend is safe and we’re out of here, I will give you my full name.”
“I never bargain, Aspen. And the way you hold yourself, the scene we stumbled onto, and the little details passing your lips, I’d say you know exactly who I am. So, don’t fucking play me.” His voice isn’t raised but it holds a solid don’t-fuck-with-me tone.
“You’re right,” I snap, deciding honesty works best in this situation. “I know exactly who you are. It’s the fucking reason I can’t give you my name just yet since you wouldn’t believe any explanation I give when Nics runs my name. See the guy behind me? I’m good for three favors if they fall into the same work like category.”
Kinney stalks forward and completely ignores the sha
rp, handmade weapon I’m still gripping. He leans in, making it easier for me to slice his throat in one swoop if I’m fast enough. And let me tell you; I am damn fast. Yet, my breath hitches when I inhale his spicy scent with a hint of leather and cinnamon.
“Three guys are standing before you while you’re caught in a life or death situation. You aren’t behaving like a normal woman would. One with the outer appearance of a lady of pleasure who is scantily clad, nice damn curves and tits ready to serve a man’s cock, hands, or mouth. And I’m not even mentioning your pussy or ass. See what I’m getting at here, Aspen without-a-last-name? You might want to explain yourself, and do it fast because I’m about to offer your brain some air and decorate the wall behind you along with it. You know why?” He inhales deep, eyes closing for a brief second until his hard, cold stare is keeping me pinned in place as he adds, “You reek of one of two things. Either an assassin, or some kind of government agent. Seeing as you would have no problem with giving me your name if you were an assassin—me being in a position to hand you well-paid jobs—I’d say you fit in the government department.”
“Kier,” I snap in a menacing tone while I keep my eyes locked with Kinney. “Find the button of the safe room and get my friend out of here safely so I can give this asshole my full name.” Or kill him, my mind offers in an afterthought.
There’s a sly smile spreading his face. “No bitch will ever be able to control the Fallon Brothers.”
I take a deep breath to concentrate on what’s to come. I let the underwire I was holding drop to the floor as I slip past Kinney. He tries to grab me but I plant my right foot with force against his kidney. These guys are massive and skilled but I’m trained and tiny, easily dodging their attacks.
It’s too damn hard to focus on staying alive while at the same time finding the button to open the safe room. Insane since I have this whole room locked inside my head, so I try to think and fight at the same time. This is the reason my legs are swooped out from underneath me as my face crashes against the floor. A heavy body presses all his weight on me, my cheek is hugging the floor due to the tight grip on my neck.
