The Space Between Rachel and Evie Page 6

by Daya Daniels

People around us danced and moved. This place was full but in this moment, it seemed that the only two people in the room were Luke and me. Taking a deep breath, I craned my neck to look up at him, allowing him to brush his lips over my own. It was slow and teasing, as if he wanted me begging for his kiss, like a good little girl. I parted my lips, while he brushed his own over both of mine. I breathed against his lips, which moved to kiss the tip of my nose again. Pushing up on my tippytoes, I inched forward to kiss Luke, while he pulled away a bit with a laugh. I widened my eyes, not impressed at all by his teasing. Luke wrapped a hand around my waist and pulled me forward, crushing his mouth to mine, stealing my breath away. I moaned into his wet mouth, sinking into the feeling of our tongues tangling together and tasting each other. We kissed for a while, until I pulled away breathless, desperately needing air. I ran a hand along Luke’s jawline, gazing into his piercing green eyes, under the pulsing pink lights.

“Hello, Evie,” Luke mouthed against my lips, giving me a blazing green stare.

I only giggled, running my hands through Luke’s thick brown hair.

“Let’s get out of here,” he suggested, only to meet my enthusiastic nod and silly smile.

  Luke

Evie snuggled against me as we took in the night air, walking along the Las Vegas Strip.

“I missed you, Luke,” she whispered into my chest.

Escaping the loud music, my ears were still ringing. Evie looked even more captivating under the street lights in her bright pink dress. She walked slowly, stopping every few steps to stare at the lights around us.

“This place is awesome, Luke!” Evie laughed.

I loved the lights too, which reminded me so much of home. Evie opened her glazed-over eyes, which were still as alluring as ever. We continued along the Strip, until we reached the fountains in front of the Bellagio.

“Come, Luke, take a picture with me,” she demanded, yanking me closer.

Evie pulled out her iPhone, held it out in front of us. It quickly flashed, nearly blinding me. I needed to make sure that I was around when she decided to look at that picture. Before I could focus my eyes, Evie pressed her lips to mine again. I pinned her against the wall, kissing her hard.

“You’re really strong, Luke, and sexy,” she slurred out with a smirk.

“Thank you,” I replied appreciating the compliment.

An incessant beep coming from my cellular phone, telling me that I had voicemails, caught my attention.

“Do you want to have sex with me, Luke?” Evie asked, giving me an innocent look.

I gave her a small nod, even though I knew it couldn’t be tonight.

“I want you to fuck me, Luke,” Evie said seductively, instantly make me hard. “I haven’t had sex in over a year,” she mumbled.

I sucked in some much-needed oxygen, unable to understand how this was possible, unless it was her choice. Evie was sexy and sweet. I’d no doubt that plenty of men would have been willing to fuck her.

Evie laughed and then in the same moment, began to sob.

“Please don’t cry, Evie,” I whispered, holding her to my chest, while checking my messages at the same time.

“Hey, Luke, it’s Evie. I-um. I’m in Las Vegas tonight at the ah Cosmopolitan. It’s room 503, on the twelfth floor. I know you’re probably busy but I was hoping you could call me back. Maybe we could still meet even though you’re leaving. I don’t know. I really like you.” The soft voice paused and muttered some expletives to herself about sounding desperate.

I stifled a laugh at the self-deprecating murmurings. Evie may not have been full-out drunk when she left me this message, but she’d undoubtedly had a few drinks before calling.

“If you get this, call me back. I would hate for you to leave, without me getting a chance to see you again. Okay, bye.”

I touched the end button on the phone and held Evie tighter against my chest.

“I want to take you somewhere,” I whispered against her soft cheek.

  Luke

“This is so cool, Luke. I’ve never been way out here,” Evie said quietly, walking around the car.

I drove out to the mountains, parking at the edge of a cliff which overlooked the city. Evie shivered softly in the light breeze, so I wrapped a sweater of mine around her. She visibly sniffed it and smiled looking directly at me.

We’d stopped on the way and picked up McDonald’s. Evie needed to eat, to soak up some of the liquor that she’d consumed. It was strange but I just wanted to talk to her. I wanted to hear her voice. I spread a blanket out on the hood of the Camaro, worried less about the paint job and more about Evie’s comfort. I hoisted Evie up and guided her carefully across the top of the car. She placed her back against the windshield, slipping her shoes off and letting them fall to the ground.

“It’s quiet out here and the view is breathtaking, Luke,” she said softly. “Do you come here a lot?”

I gave her a nod and removed my suit jacket and unbuttoned my shirt. I sprawled out next to her. Then we opened all the food containers, eating in silence for a while. Evie’s gaze remained on the night sky, while she leaned against my shoulder.

“Why do you cry, Evie?” I asked her.

Evie jerked her head towards me, giving me a twisted look. “I don’t know. I guess my life just isn’t the way I want it to be and sometimes it makes me sad. That’s all.”

Evie’s eyes bore into mine under the faint light.

  “Don’t you ever cry?”

  “No.”

  “Where are you from?”

I laughed. “Far from here, very far.”

“Like New York City or Massachusetts or Florida?”

I laughed again. “No, much, much further, Evie.”

Evie pursed her lips and dropped the question.

“There.” I pointed up towards the sky.

“What?” she asked knotting her brows.

  “That’s where I’m from.”

She looked at me and back up to the sky and then back to me again. Then she exploded into laughter, trying to muffle the sound by covering her perfect little mouth with her hand. Her reaction caused me to laugh a little even though I was unsure of what was so funny. I reached in my pocket for my cigarettes, pulling one out. It would be my last one for a while but for some reason after holding it, I didn’t want it right now. Evie continued to laugh hysterically, while I watched her only amused.

The straps of her pink dress began to slide down her shoulders and her bottom hem was hiked up so high that I could see the top of her inner thighs. I got the feeling she wanted me to see and the boldness was only making me hard.

“You know I always wanted to go up there…to space!” she joked. “I always thought about it when I was a little kid, wondering what it would be like. Get away from all the craziness on this earth! It must be peaceful. I always wanted to visit Mars.”

I knew Evie loved astronomy, even though we’d never discussed it.

“What did you want to be growing up?” I asked her, running my fingers over her warm cheek.

Evie nodded, chuckling. “A scientist, a space explorer, an astronomer. I had some unique ideas about what I wanted to be when I got older but I knew it wasn’t happening. I’m horrible at math and my grades in school were never great…in every subject.

“I can’t say I actually even tried after graduating from high school. When all my friends went off to college, I kind of stayed here in Rachel. I figured I would never get in. Guess you could say I gave up before even trying.”

Evie dug her hand into the box of McNuggets, pulling two out, one in each hand.

“You know my dad believes in aliens. He always had these crazy stories from working at Area 51 when I was a kid. I think most of them he made up, since they always seemed to be told around Halloween time.” Evie giggled.

“Do you believe in aliens?” Evie asked.

I cringed, knowing I despised the word. “Yes, I do but I prefer the term ‘other worldly
beings.’ Besides, Evie, aren’t aliens scary little green men with long fingers and big bulgy eyes?”

Evie continued to giggle. “I guess they are.” She paused in thought.

“So, what kind of alien are you then?” She giggled.

I leaned in to Evie, pulling her into my chest.

“I’m the kind that won’t hurt you,” I whispered into her ear, kissing it softly.

Evie looked up and gave me a ridiculously sexy smile. “What kind of alien would I be? A Martian!” Evie laughed, making antennas with her fingers, poking out from her forehead.

  She really was drunk.

“You would make a better-looking Neptunian,” I joked.

“Okay, funny guy, is that where you’re from? Do you live on Neptune then?”

I laughed, giving her a smirk. “No, I live much further than there.”

We stared up into the sky for the next two hours, while Evie pointed out the Milky Way and the Cassiopeia constellations.

“Do you know the story?” she asked softly.

I did but I told her no anyway. I was enjoying listening to her just talk. Every now and again I picked up the slur in her speech, which only made the woman in my arms even more adorable.

“To appease the monster, Cepheus and Cassiopeia chained their daughter Andromeda to a rock as a sacrifice, but Andromeda was saved from the monster’s jaw by the hero Perseus. It’s one of the most famous rescue stories in history! I can’t believe you don’t know it.” She chuckled.

Mars could be seen tonight with the naked eye. The red color glowed against the distance of the blackness. I relaxed, listening to Evie continue. Evie knew quite a bit about the night sky above, which impressed me. She began to grow quiet, when her eyelids started to become heavy, telling me that sleep for her wasn’t too far away. I knew large amounts of alcohol had that effect on the human body.

I pulled her to my chest and she twisted her body to straddle me, settling herself into my lap. Her pussy was flush against my hard cock, through the material of our clothes. She grinded herself into it, making me groan followed by a soft chuckle. She was teasing me but Evie truly didn’t know what she was getting herself into.

Running a hand through Evie’s thick hair, I kissed her, tasting her mouth. It was slow and sensuous. Evie kissed me back hungrily, raking her fingers through my hair until she was panting. Evie nuzzled her face into mine in a weird drunk/affectionate gesture and then she went still for what seemed like eternity. I listened to her soft breathing. Then, she spoke.

“I want you to make love to me, Luke.”

“I can’t tonight, Evie, but soon,” I promised her, which wasn’t true since I knew I could easily have fucked her against the roof of this car but I wanted more. I wanted to give her more. Besides, she was also drunk.

“When are you leaving?” she breathed out.

“I have to leave tonight.” I stared up at the sky wishing there was some way I could stay but I knew I couldn’t.

If I left, I wasn’t sure when Ascela would be sending me back. It could be years, if ever. Evie let out a long breath and then wetness from her cheek slicked the skin on mine.

“I don’t want you to leave me,” she whispered with a sniffle.

I felt my chest tighten at her plea. “What do you want me to do, Evie?” I asked taking a deep breath and wiping her face with my palm, without looking at her.

“Take me home, Luke.” She was drifting off to sleep.

I wrapped my arms around Evie, listening to her breathing steady. She was out. I’d made my decision. I would face the repercussions in full force when they came.

  CHAPTER TWO

  Evie

Opening my eyes, I yawned. Running my hands over the bare skin on my legs that were twisted in white sheets, I realized I had nothing else on besides a white T-shirt.

Squinting my tired eyes, I scanned the room, taking in my surroundings. I was alone in a large circular room, with sparkling white tile floors and low ambient lighting that filled the space. The furnishings were minimal. Everything was white as well as the walls but it lacked the sterile feeling that I thought it would have had. There were no windows. Except for the sound of a low humming, it was deathly quiet. I groaned when the pounding headache overcame me. I sat forward on the edge of the bed. I shut my eyes again, hoping to stop the spinning of the room and the contents of my stomach, which were about to find their way on the shiny floor at my feet.

There was a small table next to where I lay with two small pills on it, near a glass of water. I peered closer to the little white tabs, noticing that they were aspirin. A small note left next to them read “Take these.” I popped the pills into my mouth and took two gulps of the water, flopping back onto the bed to look at the ceiling.

I wasn’t sure where I was but the hammering in my head was all I could concentrate on. The scent of Luke was saturated in the fibers of the T-shirt I was wearing. Maybe I went home with him? This had to be his hotel room.

I remembered very little from last night. Hopefully, I hadn’t embarrassed myself too much. Remember, Evie, remember, I scolded myself. What did I remember?

Luke, dancing, lots of shots, fountains of water, feeling horny, bright lights, kissing Luke. I vividly remembered kissing Luke. I smiled. McDonald’s, the mountains, staring up at the sky, the hood of Luke’s car. I sighed.

I normally wasn’t so wild but something snapped in me last night. I had fun with Luke. I wanted to see where we could take this. I remembered he said he had to leave and I begged him not to.

I groaned again, clutching my head in both hands. The ripping headache I had was overtaking all logical thought. I closed my eyes and wrapped myself back in the sheets, falling off to sleep.

  Luke

I was employed by an agency called Ascela. Upon my return, I spent the first few hours being debriefed by the Council, which were a large group of leaders that all the agencies, including Ascela, reported to. One elder was selected from each distant galaxy to represent its own lifeform.

The Council were responsible for establishing law and order throughout the fifth dimension. Together they wielded power over everything and maintained the checks and balances in order to keep peace and avoid war. Direct defiance of the Council’s rules could result in harsh punishment including expulsion of any official, agent or civilian from their own galaxy.

It was my duty to monitor and report any developments regarding nuclear arms on Earth, since the Cold War.

The last meeting with Viktor Krushkev revealed that Russia had in fact tripled its nuclear armament, in complete opposition of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons abided by the world’s most powerful nations.

Viktor Krushkev had been employed by the Russian government for nearly forty years, as a scientist, and had top secret information about its development and capabilities. Krushkev disappeared approximately three hundred days ago and was suspected of stealing the latest nuke that the Russians built.

We suspected that the nuclear weapon he was in possession of was similar to the RDS-220 hydrogen bomb built by the Russians in 1961, which they called the Tsar Bomba. Krushkev swore he had no details on movement or exact specifications of the nuke. I wasn’t inclined to believe him. Krushkev’s loyalty always went to the highest bidder but after some solid intel, it was confirmed that the nuke was up for auction on the black market to terrorists.

A missing nuclear weapon of this size was a threat to both Earth itself and its inhabitants. The intel was filtered to various agencies, and the United States government and the United Kingdom were also made aware. There usually wasn’t much they could do besides bargain with Russia. Russia would simply deny the existence of the nuke and have Viktor Krushkev assassinated.

It was imperative that Viktor Krushkev not be harmed, until we could locate the weapon.

Our agency Ascela developed the power to deactivate nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants after 1959, but we had to know where they were being kept. Wi
thout that information, we were lost in the dark.

Ascela had only recently begun monitoring thirty countries on Earth, where there are four hundred and forty-four nuclear reactors for electricity generation. At last intel, there were sixty-three new nuclear power plants in fifteen different countries being built. Earth relied entirely too much on nuclear energy. It was Ascela’s and the Interstellar Alliance’s mission to protect Earth, which served a dual purpose. The first was to sustain life on Earth, its humankind and Mother Nature. The second was to preserve Earth’s natural resources for our planet’s benefit. Water was our priority. We would need Earth’s natural resources in the event of the death of our planet. If Earth was destroyed, it could potentially be the end of existence for all.

With all the latest developments over the last century in space exploration, NASA was reaching further and further outside of Earth’s solar system and to the edges. We suspected there to be good reason for this, since we knew that humans would eventually seek to populate outer space, to maintain the existence of their kind.

We doubted that humans would ever achieve the rate of space travel that we had in the last trillion years, but they were now making expedited progress. Ascela would never leave Earth’s space operations unchecked. We kept a close eye on every single development that Earth was making in space travel.

Earth’s inhabitants were deemed as irresponsible after hundreds of years of humans mining Earth’s natural resources, such as gold, silver, iron, and copper, decreasing Earth’s mass. Global warming from pollution led to years of drought and famine. Earth’s many world wars and nuclear testing that led to radiation emissions had catastrophic effects for hundreds of years. Earth was dying a slow death but the planet needed to be preserved.
