Making Magic
Welcome to Making Magic, a little section at the end of the book where I can give readers a glimpse at what I do. It’s not edited and my launch team doesn’t read it because it’s kind of a last minute thing. Therefore typos will surely follow.
It’s always a tricky thing to know when to end a series. But I’ve decided to end this one while it’s strong and finish on a high point—at least I hope I am! It’s been tremendous fun to write and is the best selling series I’ve ever had. So why stop?
There are a few reasons, but first and foremost is that change fuels creativity. Doing something new is the way to keep the fires of story and character creation burning. Staying with a series for too long risks my getting repetitive and then me finding the writing monotonous. However a close second is what’s sometimes called reader fatigue. It’s that time when you see a new book in the series is coming but you don’t care because it feels like the overarching story will never really end. You get tired of waiting to find out what’s really going on and how it will all end. And finally, related to reader fatigue, is that point when a series gets too long and new readers are daunted. You look at the string of ten books and think “do I really want to start that?” I’ve experienced all of these are both a writer and a reader. Although I know there are some super long series out there, it’s not something I aspire to. Don’t get me wrong. If the epic story comes along that demands to go on and on, I’ll have to write it. But for this series, five feels like the right place to bring it to a close.
But fear not. In Book 4 you may remember Lachlan telling Kinley about a group of legendary highlanders known as the Skaraven. If I’m not mistaken—and how could I be—we’ll be seeing them up close and personal in the next series.
Thank you so much for making this series so wonderful for me! I’m super excited about the Skaraven so I hope you’ll join me in those stories too.
Thank you for reading, thank you for reviewing, and I’ll see you between the covers soon.
XOXO,
Hazel
