Forever (Eternity #1)

Now running a security consultant business based in Portland, far enough away to keep his home life quite separate—he’d learned that lesson well—yet close enough to make it an easy commute, he adjusted easily. Most of his crew had scattered to the four winds, some to make their way legitimately, others not. The ones who took him up on his offer to go legit were working out well, assuming the mantle of keeping the law almost as easily as breaking it. Dean presumed it was because protection was protection in their eyes, and he didn’t doubt his leadership had something to do with it. Providing security, acting as bodyguards and installing and monitoring high-tech security systems perhaps wasn’t as challenging as their former lives, but it paid equally well and one didn’t have to look over one’s shoulder constantly. He never thought about who might assumed his role back in Sacramento.

“I’ve invited Sandra and Enrico for dinner on Saturday.” Amy snuggled closer, her eyes shut. Dean had been correct about Enrico. The man was well established in Dean’s business and had managed to convince Sandra to move to Eugene, although they weren’t living together. There was more going on in that relationship than he was privy to, but he figured to stay out of it. Amy meddled enough for the both of them.

“What about Randy and Andrea?” His lieutenant was as indispensible as always. Dean gave him his head and his own portion of the security business, but they still worked closely together.

Violet eyes blinked open and studied him. “Andrea finally convinced that man to take some time off. They’re going camping. Really camping. No flush toilets. Andrea wants to try it before she has the baby. I can’t imagine.”

He laughed. It felt good to just laugh at mundane things. It felt better not to have to guard his thoughts and hide how he felt. He remembered Randy talking about going back to nature, but hadn’t felt the need to pay such close attention to detail as he had in his past life. Another blessing.

Baby number two hitched under his hand, pressing upwards as though seeking his touch. Fucking lucky. He could think it because it was true.

“I gotta crash, Dean. I’m pretty much done in.” Amy stretched, her arms now above her head and he feasted his eyes on her curves. Maybe she’d have some energy once she was undressed and prone in their bed…

“You go ahead, sweetheart. I’ll do a walk through.” He hadn’t gotten soft even if his life was vastly different. It was his job to keep his family safe. “And I’ll check on Emma.”

Rising to her feet with a little assistance Amy gifted him with her smile. She still wore her hair long, although braided it or left it in a ponytail as often as not. And he still loved to weave his hands through it, annoying the hell out of her when he freed it from its confinement.

Walking her down the hallway leading to the stairs, looping an arm around her shoulders, he reveled in her warmth and her scent, marveled yet again at his fucking luck. Dean Chambray sincerely hoped Amy Chambray had her forever, because he was definitely living his.
