Fertile Farms Bundle

Just as it seemed he might never cease staring them down with his doubtful, angry gaze, the other two men returned from having ransacked their home. Without a word they went out behind the officer, the routine old hat to them, nothing needed to be said. “We’ll be back in time for harvest. Don’t try to withhold your duty-bound share. We’ve tallied what you should produce and we will expect it precisely. Anything less is tantamount to treason,” he stated then pivoted on his heel. “Think of your husband out there should you doubt your duty to provide.”
He didn’t close the door behind him, didn’t pay any more heed to them. Though as they watched they could see the fourth individual--more waifish than the slender officer even--return to the wagon, undoubtedly having inspected their fields to do just as he had said.
The two of them didn’t dare move as the wagon was pulling away, only two of them sat upon it as the other pair marched at its side, rifles at the ready.
With such a mighty sigh, Legault slammed the door shut then wrapped both arms around Amy, clutching her tight in a hug. It was relief, pure relief. Then joy. For he laughed and kissed her, “Oh Up Above, Amy... we did it.” He repeated himself softly, kissing her over and over again.
She was crying, but she barely even realized the tears were streaming down her cheeks in giant rivulets. The release of stress, the pain of deception, the cruelty of her father’s memory, it was all too much. She clutched onto him for dear life, and she ignored the mess of the house around her, the work they’d have to do to get it cleaned and fixed, and how hard it’d be in her state. “Don’t get carried away,” she sobbed. “They may be testin’ us.”
Tender and so lovingly he caressed and kissed her, muttering, “They’re not. It’s all okay. We’re gonna be fine, Amy. Just fine.” He held her until the tears stopped, and though their home was a mess, their preparations for supper a shambles, he was right. They never returned that night. Nor any time soon thereafter.

The farm had always been run by us for as long as I can remember. My ma and pa passed when I was just a baby, and so my oldest sister, Rose, she took over. Then the twins, Mary and Lizzy came of age and they started helping out. Then Fiona, she graduated high school, and you guessed it, she started workin’ on the farm too.
But I wanted something more than that. I wanted to go away to the big city, to see the flashing lights and a city that never sleeps. I wanted to lose myself in a new place, and meet new people. But Rose, she didn’t want that, and neither did any of the others. They were pleadin’ with me not to go away for college.
My grades sure were somethin’, and I always was the teacher’s favourite. Reading far beyond my own level, but our town’s library wasn’t at all big, and there was still so much I wanted to learn.
So I guess we came to a compromise. I’d stay until I turned 19 at least, and help out on the farm. In return, they were gonna hire me someone they called a tutor, which I guess was just a teacher who would be able to teach me in private. From home.
I wasn’t lookin’ forward to it, not at all. It was just somethin’ I was agreeing to to get them all off my back for a little while when I finally decided to take off.
But Mr. Roberts, well... he made me have some second thoughts, I’ll admit.
* * *
The first day Mr. Roberts arrived was a pretty momentous occasion for our sleepy lil’ farm. My sisters never saw a whole lot of men folk in their day to day, and neither did I for that matter. The local school house was run by the church, and so boys and girls were taught in separate halves of the buildin’. Which meant even in our school days, we never had much of a run in with fellas.
But when he first got there, I watched from my upstairs window. There he was, a dapper lookin’ fellow, wearin’ a smart lookin’ suit the likes of which I’d never seen. I’ll admit here and now, my opinion about having a tutor immediately changed. If only a little.
Rose was the one most eager to greet him, though not for the reasons ya might think. She was the boss of the farm, as the oldest, and she had it in her head that she was our protector. And a fella on the farm meant she had some idea that she had to scope him out and make sure he’d be safe to have around.
Even she was a lil’ surprised to see such a fancy lookin’ fella at our door though. Tall, dark and handsome would be the cliché way of puttin’ it. He wasn’t big and burly like the few other local farmers we did encounter, he was lean and fair. With a pair of glasses, though they didn’t make him look dorky or nothin’, lil’ bookish perhaps, but that was okay. I loved my books.
I never heard their first talk, but I could imagine how it went, knowing Rose well enough, and their body language.
She stomped on up, past my three other sisters who were there to greet him first. Rose pushed on up to the front, hair tied back in a ponytail, her old work shirt tied up in front, skin tanned and glistenin’ from a hard mornings work as she stood there in her jeans.
She was welcomin’ him, but layin’ down the rules too. She was big on rules, especially for guests. But while she barked and blustered, I could see Mary and Lizzy talkin’ between each other with masked excitement, eyin’ him up and gigglin’. Then there was Fiona, lookin’ stern as she could manage, though that’s how she always was. I knew beneath it all that she was just as excited for the touch of change, almost as much as me she wanted sometin’ else. Don’t think she ever liked bein’ the “middle child”. Felt she never got enough due.
Which was why when Mr. Roberts started to greetin’ them all, takin’ Fiona’s hand first of all and kissin’ the back of it, I could tell she was smitten. Though the twins weren’t fussed at bein’ second and third place. While Rose would have none of that fancy do!
* * *
My first time meetin’ him came shortly after of course. Well, shorts a relative thing. Rose kept him out there for ages, showin’ him around, impressin’ upon him the importance of his duties to teach me. She could go on a while, I’ll tell you.
I swear, she thought she really was my ma.
But this part of the story ain’t about me and Mr. Roberts, not yet.
My sisters didn’t tend to notice me so much, ‘cause I was quiet and kept to myself. Or so they thought. But truth of the matter was, I was a great listener, and I had a knack for sneakin’ about, keepin’ tabs on what everyone else was doin’. Usually it weren’t nothin’ too interestin’, but with Mr. Roberts on our farm, things took a turn for the interesting, and I wanted to be in on it.
Fiona had changed her clothes since Mr. Roberts first arrived, even though it was only a couple hours later. That weren’t like her at all, but then again, Fiona was a different kinda woman altogether when there was a fella involved I was learnin’.
I knew she had an inklin’ to leave the farm. We’d talked about it in times past, but she never wanted to do it by her lonesome. And she never wanted to do it with me much either. Fact of the matter was, though she’d never admit it, I think she just wanted to meet a fella and move off together.
Seein’ her dolled up in a nice dress as she went out to the guest house confirmed it. She brought a plate with her, holdin’ a lil’ mini cake she’d baked herself to bring to the man as a dessert.
When Mr. Roberts answered the door, his tie was gone, and his collar undone, but the man looked only more handsome still.
“Oh hello Fiona, sorry, I wasn’t expecting company, I was just unpacking and trying to settle in,” he said, a bright, friendly smile upon his face as he held the door open. “Come on in,” he invited immediately.
Fiona goin’ into the tutor’s room? Well, that was against one of the rules, and I knew it. Could have screamed bloody murder and Rose’d come running, and she’d chase him out of the house then
and there just for invitin’ Fiona in. We were all pretty close in age, me and my sisters, but Rose acted like she was fifty when she was only half that.
Now, I know Fiona didn’t always get lots of attention, but truth be told, it wasn’t her looks. She was a pretty girl, and none too stupid. But she just always was overshadowed by Rose. Or the twins. They teased her somethin’ awful at times, so Fiona sometimes acted like she was the loneliest girl in the world.
“Sure, I’d love to Mr. Roberts,” she said with a cheerful smile on those ruby lips of hers. She even got dolled up with makeup!
Now, here’s about where my knowledge of the situation might be expected to die off, but I knew our farm in and out, better than any of my sisters even. And every place had its own little peep holes or quiet nooks to nose in on, and the guest house was no exception.
“What’s that you have there?” he said, eying the little cake with fascination as Fiona waltzed on in, swayin’ her hips so wide.
It was a little weird, watchin’ her like that, I had to admit. Kinda exciting, though. I just knew somethin’ funny was goin’ on with how she was movin’ and biting down on her lower lip like she was real nervous as she offered him her baked good.
“I made this just for you, Mr. Roberts,” she said, as she blushed real bright.
It was a pretty lookin’ lil’ cake too, I had to give her that. Chocolate, looked like a lil’ volcano with some chocolate sauce runnin’ down the sides to the base. It set my tummy to rumblin’ then and there, but I had more important things to keep track of.
“Wow, it looks delicious! So fast too,” he exclaimed in surprise, smiling as he took the cake from her and laid it down on the small table that was his own personal eating nook, just two chairs and a table next to his mini-kitchen.
I was watchin’ from my hidey-hole that I crept into from beneath, and I could see it all.
“Would you like to share it with me?” he asked, fetching two forks from the drawer as I studied his room. He wasn’t lying, he was fast settlin’ in, putting out his suits, a little ornate globe and an array of books he’d brought with them.
I couldn’t wait to get my hands on ‘em! But it wasn’t the time…
Naw, I was learnin’ about something different altogether. I was learning about how men and womenfolk talk together. I practiced pressing my lips together like Fiona was doing, but it felt strange.
“I would love that,” she said, and even her voice was different. Had a strange little lilt to it. Like it was a bit lower, and she really emphasized the world ‘love’.
She went to sit down, but then Mr. Roberts did a surprisin’ thing, he took hold of the chair for her and pulled it out, offerin’ it up to her like she was some sorta princess or somethin’. Guess he just had some refined manners that the local boys didn’t.
“Such a gentleman,” Fiona said, and she came over, holding her red dress up at one side between her index finger and thumb as she sat down more dainty than I’d ever seen her behave. It was such a strange shift in her behaviour, but I couldn’t help but be entranced by it. I was learnin’ something real different. Like for instance, that beneath her red dress, Fiona weren’t wearin’ a stitch! Nothin’! I could even see her bush!
“Ah well, when a man entertains a lovely lady in his residence after she brings him a delicious looking cake, he has to treat her right,” he said, setting the table, pouring them both up some milk before he sat down with her.
He was pretty smooth, my new tutor-to-be. I wondered if he’d treat me like that, but I shook the thought from my head. I was just the baby of the family. No one wanted to treat me like that, and I never could have thought to make him a cake like that. I should’ve, though. That would have made him like me loads more and wanna teach me even better.
She crossed her legs and I couldn’t see between them no more except for along the sides, her tan legs nice and muscular from all her hard work around the farm. Fiona wasn’t a slouch.
She might’ve chafed at Rose always bein’ so bossy, but she worked as hard as any, harder! Just to prove she was as good as any of the rest of us.
They dug into the cake, but right away Mr. Roberts was taken. You’d think he’d just bitten into the most delightfully tasty thing he’d ever put in his mouth!
“Mmm mmm! Oh my, Fiona, you must be the baker of the family,” he said with such appreciation, and I bought it, didn’t think someone could fake such enjoyment of a simple cake!
But oh, Fiona, she was bright red, and I watched as the top of her foot ran up his shin a little. I thought that was weird, her messin’ up his nice pants like that. But he didn’t look upset at all, and she was grinning like some fool.
“Thank you for sayin’ so, Mr. Roberts, but normally I leave the cookin’ and bakin’ to the twins. It’s only when special company comes by that I like to break out my… culinary skills,” she said, her voice like I’d never heard it before, so… enticing and erotic.
For his part, Mr. Roberts reached on over, placed his big hand upon her knee, right at the edge of her dress skirts and gave a squeeze as he smiled.
“A shame you don’t get to exercise those skills a bit more then, you’re clearly well suited to them,” he said with a smile.
And I knew for a fact that Fiona never cared for baking and cooking, heck, she downright loathed it normally! Or at least, pretended to. But suddenly with Mr. Roberts there you’d think she was Martha Stewart! Heck, I wouldn’t have been surprised if the twins had baked that cake and she was just takin’ credit.
Her foot kept rubbin’ on him, and she shimmied a little bit closer to him, bringing the fork to her lips and pressing the cake between them. And she made a sound, but it wasn’t a normal dinner-time sound. It was more like a moan, and she was lookin’ at him the entire time. That was really strange, I figured, but I didn’t know nothin’ about this sort of thing.
I’d have to practice when I got to my room, makin’ that sound.
They continued a while like that, the two of ‘em eating and looking at one another across the table like somethin’ was strange. If I didn’t know better I’d say they wanted to eat each other more than the cake.
There on her knee, Mr. Roberts’ hand lingered, and her foot — still in that high heel I’d never seen her wear before! — kept tracin’ up and down his calf.
I knew the cake was done because I heard the forks hit their plates, but still they kept touchin’ one another a little.
“Mr. Roberts,” my sister began, as if somethin’ was on her mind rather serious, “I know you’re going to be busy with teaching Lily, but…” she stopped there.
“Go on,” he said, urging her as his hand rubbed up from her knee to her thigh, raising her dress a little and letting his palm and those long fingers touch her thigh. “What’s on your mind?”
“Well… I was thinkin’ you and I could spend some time together now and then. Get to know one another. I’d be ever so interested in hearin’ your stories about travel and such. Maybe… tonight. After the other girls have gone to bed,” she said, an impish lil’ smile on her ruby lips.
“Fiona,” he said and it sounded more like a wolf growlin’ than a man speaking, and he leaned closer to her.
“I’d enjoy that quite a lot.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Fiona was gonna get her behind tanned if Rose ever found out about this!
Yet there she was, Mr. Roberts barely havin’ time to get through the door and she was enticin’ him off to do things that were strictly not allowed. More than that, her high heeled shoe was left upon the floor and her bare foot trailed up from his calf in between his thighs so brazen like I figured he’d jump up!
But he didn’t.
“There’s a creek nearby, where the farm gets its water. But there’s some trees off to the west, and that’s where the old tree house is. You and me can have some private time there, lookin’ out over the water… the moon and all above us,” she said so sultrily, I had no idea where she go
t it from!
Mr. Roberts stiffened in his seat a little, and I could see he was breathin’ heavier.
“I’ll meet you there then,” he said.
“After all the lights go out in the farmhouse,” she added, smilin’ so happily with herself.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, nor what I was hearin’. One thing I knew for certain, though. There was no way I was going to miss what was to happen later that night.
* * *
I knew full well what treehouse Fiona was talkin’ about. I’d spent much of my time up there readin’ to get out of chores over the years. Never did I think Fiona would be usin’ it for somethin’ so… naughty, though.
But soon as the lights went out, I waited for it: the sound of Fiona sneakin’ off. It was so soft you’d have to be expectin’ it to hear. She was a crafty one, craftier than I gave her credit for, that’s for sure.
I went after her shortly thereafter, my PJs nice and thick, so I didn’t need to worry none about gettin’ cold. But her? I could see her ahead in the moonlight dressed in the same outfit as earlier, but holdin’ her heels in her hand until she got to the edge of the farm, and slipped ‘em back on.
I had to be cautious, because I didn’t know when Mr. Roberts would be comin’ behind, but as Fiona got into her heels and waited, I took my station.
Y’see, later on, Rose found out about my secret tree house, and she’d come and drag me back to the farm to do chores. So I created a second little hideaway in the trees. Tucked in underneath the treehouse was a lil’ box, obscured by the branches and leaves, where I was able to hide out.
I had to get into the treehouse before either of ‘em though, slide the secret hatch out of the way and climb down in. None too soon either, ‘cause I heard a giggle and a laugh.
I was beneath ‘em again, but this time I had a much better vantage point. My little hideaway was made to avoid Rose, but for that I needed to keep a good eye on her too. It helped that when Mr. Roberts and her climbed up, they turned on a lantern, lightin’ them both up so I could see ‘em clear as day.
