I laughed, shaking my head. Would I ever figure this thing out?
I wasn’t ready to give up on everything—not yet, but man, did I have a ton to think about. My birthday was coming up, and even if I didn’t have the relationship I’d hoped for last Valentine’s Day when I started this experiment, I was a whole lot clearer about who I was and what I’d be willing to settle for—and not settle for.
Maybe it was time for a mini-retreat to the mountains. I hadn’t taken a real vacation in forever and hadn’t even been to my cabin for at least two years. I remembered my vow to stop being a workaholic, and decided it was time for me to take some time off, just by myself, time to think and figure this out. Just like my staff, I could do with a vacation.
And Rhonda could handle things while I was gone.
I loaded the van and turned over the keys to one of the other board members, glad to be finished with my obligations for a while.
Then, instead of sticking around as I planned earlier, I headed home before the fireworks started. Since I was alone anyway, I’d be a lot happier if I grabbed a bottle of wine and watched the celebration on TV instead of getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.
At least I’d be in good company, with someone I both liked and respected.

About the Author
Life has many twists and turns, and things don't always turn out the way we hope. In my reading and my writing, I like strong women and compelling stories with mystery and suspense. Like most romance writers, I am a romantic at heart. But I believe romance takes many forms, so in my heart it’s the classic Romanticism of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
I have many creative interests that include painting, quilting, and glass art, as well as being a writer.
When I’m not traveling to Costa Rica or Mexico to get away from our wettest winter months, I live on California’s Redwood Coast with my husband and two kitties. We have a wonderful ocean view, and when the fog comes in—as it always does in the summer—I’m usually either curled up with a good book, or busy writing, painting, or hovering around a warm kiln making fused glass jewelry.
