And when she did make mistakes, she simply dusted herself off and tried again.
She had grown much closer to her aunts and she looked forward to their monthly coven meetings. They liked coming to Dean’s Kitchen, but just last month, Dean had driven her up to Springlake to see her aunts. They had held their coven meeting in Aunt Ursa’s kitchen, and she’d had a great time catching up with her cousins and playing with their lively, exuberant children.
The three witches discussed spells and potions and the latest discoveries and developments in the magical world. But they also talked about anything and everything under the sun and made weird and wonderful plans together. Life was an adventure, and Layla was about to embark on the next stage of her truly amazing life.
She was getting married. And her aunts were helping her plan her wedding.
Dean came out with a big plate of dumplings and sat down to join them. Layla laced her fingers through Dean’s and smiled as her aunts began to talk excitedly about the wedding. She and Dean were mated and she had moved in with him. They were planning to have their wedding in a few months’ time and they both wanted Max to be present.
They wanted Max there as their brother, and not just as a friend, a guest. Max was now a frequent patron of The Magic Oven and Dean’s Kitchen. He was Layla’s biggest customer and through Max, she’d gotten many more customers and orders. Max was more comfortable around them, but there was still no sign that he remembered anything. But there was still time. They had time, and they had each other.
Dean put his arm around Layla’s waist and kissed her hair. She turned and saw the fierce love and pride shining in his eyes. Leaning her cheek against her mate’s strong shoulder, she let out a happy sigh.
Dean was her rock, her best friend, her love and her life. He loved her, supported her, believed in her and cherished her. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her.
As long as they were together, there was nothing they couldn’t overcome.
“As for the wedding cake, what design would you like?” Aunt Ruth was asking.
“I can help you bake it,” Aunt Ursa said excitedly. “I’m quite an accomplished baker, you know.”
“I’m thinking...” Layla tapped her chin. “The cake should be shaped like...”
“A large soup pot!” Dean and Layla said together.
They stared at each other and laughed.
“Yeah, that’s how we met.”
“Because of a pot.”
Aunt Ruth and Aunt Ursa clapped and laughed delightedly. “Ah yes, the pot! That’s a great idea!”
They laughed and continued eating, drinking and talking late into the night.
Her aunts were planning a fairytale wedding for her. But Layla knew that she was already living her happily ever after.
Her life was filled with love, joy and magic.
She had her mate, her family around her, and she was doing what she loved. She was a baker and a witch. There was magic everywhere, in every moment, in everyone.
The best part was, you didn’t need a spell to create the most powerful and beautiful magic of all.
