  “Okay.” She walked out.

He strolled over to look at the sketch of the man they identified. “Make copies of this,” he told Simon. “Show it to everyone in the house and ask if they’ve seen him loitering about. Send four of our best men to the hall where the concert took place and have them question each man and woman who worked there. See if anyone remembers seeing him.”

“He wasn’t on the official rooster. Somehow, they managed to make a fake pass,” Martin said.

“Of course, they did, but he would have come in before yesterday to study the place. They were familiar with it, so one of them must have worked there for a few days to get to know the layout. It’s obvious they were aware of every place where there was a camera. I want our people to talk to the security people over there and see if they can identify him.”

  “Yes, sir.”

The work seemed to be endless. There were a lot of details they needed to cover. Keran began to make a timeline of events. He inputted all the information they found today. And yet, he did all that while his attention was focused on the phone. Call, call, call! He wanted to shout, and yet the phone didn’t ring. The kidnappers had nerves of steel. The longer they kept Justin, the greater the chance that the investigation would reveal something that would give away their identities and whereabouts. He expected them to wrap this thing up within a couple of days and then scram. He was willing to pay whatever money they demanded as long as they didn’t hurt his child.

For that to happen though, they needed to make contact.

He was totally at their mercy, and they damned well knew that.

Was this personal? Their way to exact revenge on him for something he did? Moneyed men often ended up making enemies they didn’t know. It might be possible that these were disgruntled employees or people he fired from some factory or another. As ideas came into his mind, he rushed off emails to his secretary and told her to do some research. The more avenues they explored, the greater chance they had of finding the culprits.

Someone came in and left a tray for him on the desk. He didn’t want to eat, didn’t feel hungry at all, but for his son, he needed to keep up his strength. Keran ate a sandwich that he didn’t even taste, as he sat and went over the list he’d formed. He would start getting some answers soon. Once his men spread out and began to question people, they would find something. It wasn’t possible for these men to avoid detection. One of them was seen by many people. Devyn and Simon saw him, so that meant he must have talked to others too.

All they had to do was find him.

He prayed fervently that they would.

Martin came in. “The man who talked to Devyn and Simon is in the police database. He was convicted ten years ago of theft at a financial institution. He served his sentence and got out two years ago. Since then, no one has seen or heard from him.”

He felt a lot more hopeful. They were on the right track already. “We’ll find him,” he said.

“I got his name and last known address, and I’m already sending someone to the town where he lived to get all the relevant information. I believe he’s not the head man. He must be serving them in his capacity as a person who can do smart jobs. He had to look convincing as someone who worked there, so he was probably hired for that part.” He hesitated. “There’s a good chance that even if we find him, he wouldn’t know where they took Justin. He may have been paid there and told to get lost. If these are professional kidnappers, they would know enough about keeping the chain separate, so one link in the chain doesn’t know about another.”

“He’s the only lead we have, so let’s hope we get something from him,” Keran barked. “Find out everything about this guy and get it on my table. I want to nail that son of a bitch.”

“If we locate him, do you want to bring him in for questioning here, or do we need to inform the police and let them do their thing?”

Keran tapped his fingers on the desk. “Get him here first, and then we’ll hand him over.”

“The police might not like it.”

“Then they better make sure they find him first,” he said.

  Martin nodded and left.

Finally, the first step in the long road ahead was revealed. It would all unravel. He would make damned sure it did. Whatever this man knew, he would tell them because if he didn’t, Keran would make his life a living hell. Never in his life did he ever break the law. He’d always respected the police, but in this case, he was eager to make an exception.

They didn’t know what they did when they kidnapped his son. They awoke the animal, the beast, in him and now, it wouldn’t quietly sit back without a fight. Keran was spoiling for a battle, and he was going to get one.

  Soon. Soon.

  Chapter Nine

Devyn was exhausted by the time she returned from the police station. Her work with the police artist produced pretty much the same result as the sketch that was created in Keran’s office, but she supposed it was important to be thorough. A whole day went by and still there was no call from the kidnappers.

Why the hell were they so quiet?

  Didn’t they want money?

She hoped they would contact Keran soon. When she got to the house, it seemed eerily quiet. The light in Keran’s study was on, so it meant he and some of the others were hard at work. She debated about going in, but she didn’t want to disturb them. Instead, she walked out through the back door and sat on one of the chairs on the patio. There was a light breeze. She raised her head, closed her eyes, and took some deep, calming breaths. It was important to be in control. She couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. Justin’s life was at stake. Nothing could go wrong. She’d already committed a grave error and now she had to make up for it by finding Justin.

Devyn felt as if her hands were tied behind her back. There wasn’t anything else she could do at this juncture. When she opened her eyes, she was startled. Shocked was more like it. Under the grove of trees straight ahead, she saw an animal. Its eyes glowed in the dark. Is it dog? A deer? As the animal padded back and forth, she saw the shape of its muscles. A wolf. It had to be that. What was it doing on Keran’s property? How did it get in? When she opened her mouth to scream, the wolf leapt forward. For a moment, she thought it was going to come straight for her, but it stopped right at the edge of the grove. Its gaze appeared to be fixed on her. She really wanted to yell or dash inside the house, but the power of its gaze was such that she was pinned to the spot.

There seemed to be something hauntingly familiar about the animal. As if she’d seen it before, almost as if she knew it.

  How was that possible?

Then, just as suddenly, it sprinted towards the main gate and bounded out of view. For a few moments, she sat still. It was hard to believe she just saw a wolf. And yet, it had been real. Not a figment of her imagination. Devyn stood and crept inside. She wanted to go and tell Keran about the wolf, but something told her he wouldn’t want to be disturbed.

Devyn went to her room instead. She took a shower, changed into her night clothes, and went to bed. Whatever it was, she could talk about it tomorrow. Sleep eluded her. After tossing and turning for a while, she got out of bed. Maybe it might help to get a glass of warm milk. When she padded outside, she heard a sound in the classroom. Devyn froze. Who could that be? Her first instinct was to hurry out of there, but after taking a few calming breaths while chiding herself for overreacting, she quietly opened the door and stepped through.

A lamp was lit in the far corner. On the carpet sat Keran. He was holding a book in his hand.

She stood frozen when he didn’t look up. Perhaps he didn’t want to be disturbed. But then she saw the way his shoulders bunched and coiled.

  He looked upset.

Devyn walked over and took a seat next to him on the carpet.

He held Justin’s scrap book of his favorite singer.

“We will get him back,” she whispered.

Keran gripped her hand but still didn’t look at her.

/>   When he didn’t say anything, she lifted her hand and caressed his cheek. “He’ll come back soon and then all will be well.” When he glanced at her, she was shocked to see the tears in his eyes. Devyn never thought she’d see a day when he would be so vulnerable. She leaned forward in an attempt to hug him. “Oh, Keran.”

His lips found hers, or perhaps her lips found his. Devyn was hazy on the details. All she remembered later on was that the kiss set her on fire. Even though a voice screamed inside her head to stop and not to indulge in this, she simply couldn’t obey anymore. More than desire, it was her need to comfort him that took precedence. This was the best way she could show him she was there for him through these difficult times.

Her lips clung to his while her arms snaked around his neck. Her fingers speared through his hair and clutched the wavy strands as she deepened the kiss. Her tongue stroked his, and the dance was exotic, wild. She tasted each nook and cranny of his mouth. His hands settled on her waist and slipped beneath her shirt. When he cupped her breasts, she gasped and lifted her head. When she stared into his eyes, all she saw was a stormy desire and a need to possess. This look matched the yearning that was burning its way through her nerves. When he ripped the shirt off her, she didn’t utter one word of protest. He pressed her down on the carpet, and before she could take a deep breath, his head bent and he kissed, nibbled and sucked her nipple.

A hot lance of heat careened through her nerves—raw and powerful. Flames of passion licked her skin while he paid homage to her breast. His hand squeezed around it while his tongue stroked and fondled the aching bud until it became hard and swollen. She ran a hand over his back and the muscles that bulged under the tips of her fingers delighted her.

“Oh, Keran,” she murmured when he shifted his attention to the other breast.

The heat, the need, drove her damn near insane. He lavished his attention on her breasts until her body arched under him. It wasn’t enough that she only took. Devyn wanted to give. When she pulled his shirt out of his jeans, he sat. Their gazes met and locked. Although she felt a little exposed and vulnerable, Devyn simply couldn’t shift or make a move to cover her breasts. He took off his shirt and the sight of his hard abs made her salivate. She longed to run her hands over his chest.

He removed his jeans, and his manhood popped up, hard and ready.

Before she could take a good look at it or make an attempt to grasp it, he lay down over her again. His mouth claimed hers once more and all sane thoughts fled from her mind. Her hand traveled down his skin until she found his hard member. It throbbed in her hand as she pumped it up and down experimentally. Almost as if on cue, her satiny center moistened.

  She was ready.

It seemed that he was too. He took position over her and the tip of his erection brushed against her center.

She let his organ go and instead, clutched his shoulders. Devyn couldn’t wait anymore. She wanted this more than anything she ever wanted before. When he plunged into her depths, she sighed. Her sheath expanded and stretched to accommodate him, and the waves of pleasure that coursed through her veins intensified. She was dragged along the current of passion and could do nothing to stem the flow.

He thrust in and out at breakneck speed. His breath exploded out of his mouth with each stroke.

Devyn was in for the ride of her life. She’d never felt this vulnerable and this ecstatic at the same time. No man had ever brought her to this state of mind. There was something special about Keran.

She didn’t know what it was.

While she clung to him and he pounded into her, desire ran through her veins much like molten lava. It burned and sizzled. She was a victim of the passion that overcame every inch of her body. When his pelvic bone ground into hers, she moaned under him.

  Now, she was close.

Devyn felt the end coming. Even though she wanted this ride to reach its peak, so she could find release from this blissful torture, she also wanted it to go on and on. “Keran,” she said his name again.

Almost as if he understood the need of her heart, Keran picked up the pace.

Her hips moved like pistons to keep in tune with his rhythm. The orgasm that exploded through her muscles made her shudder. Her toes curled and hot lances of ecstasy rippled through her entire body.

A moment later, he came inside her. In one quick move, he rolled off her and lay by her side.

For some time, they lay still. Devyn didn’t quite know what to say. She’d done the unthinkable. This shouldn’t have happed—and yet it did. Maybe it was meant to be. Perhaps they belonged together, and that was the reason why they couldn’t stay away from each other.

  “Thank you,” he said.

She turned to stare at his handsome face. Oh, God! She wanted to gobble him up. Even though she’d barely finished making love to him, if given a chance, she would do the same thing over again. “For what?”

  “For giving yourself to me.”

She was somewhat surprised that she’d wanted so badly to comfort him. The man had the ability to peek into her heart and read the emotions. “I really like you.”

His hand snaked over the skin of her stomach and settled on her soft flesh. “I like you too.”

The warmth of his touch seeped into her and made her wish she could do more with him. She put her hand over his. For now, it would have to do.

Silence reigned in the room. While it should have made her feel nervous, it felt comforting in a way. They didn’t need words between them. Just his presence was enough to instill a sense of peace in her. “Did you find out anything about Justin yet?”

He hesitated for the briefest of moments. “We have some leads, but nothing has panned out. It’s…a bit disconcerting that they haven’t contacted me yet.”

“They’ll do it soon,” she assured him. “After all, what else can they do? They kidnapped him for a purpose, and they’ll fulfill it.”

“I can spend any amount of money necessary to bring him back. Just—pray that he’s okay, that they haven’t hurt him. He’s just a little boy.”

Devyn turned towards him and put her hand on his cheek. “He’s a strong boy,” she reminded him of the words he uttered not too long ago. Of course, he was a father and he felt afraid for his son. She’d spent such little time with the boy and even her heart lurched whenever she thought he might be at the mercy of some ruthless people who would probably do anything for money.

How did Keran bear the pain?

He was a strong man. A really strong man, indeed.

She was lucky she’d made his acquaintance. She just felt that destiny brought her to his door and now, she would make sure she stayed right here until he was doing better. When Justin was home then she would think about the future. Until that time, her life belonged to Keran. She would do anything, anything at all, to make him feel better. If she had to give her own life to make this situation better, she would do so willingly.

  Chapter Ten

  I love him.

Devyn wanted to announce her feelings at the top of her voice, but the grief that clung to her heart didn’t allow her to do so. Keran’s son would always remain his priority and for now, he could only focus on him, but when Justin was safely back home, she would tell him how she felt. Maybe it was possible he also harbored some strong feelings for her and if it was true, they might actually have a future together.

She looked forward to that day.

Until then, all she could do was be strong for Keran and for Justin. To pray the child returned home safely. She was grateful that Keran didn’t seem to hold it against her that she couldn’t keep his son safe. No matter what he said, she would always hold herself accountable for her role in his kidnapping. The boy deserved better. She should have done better, been more prepared.

From the instant Justin returned, she would watch him like a hawk and she wouldn’t take his security for granted. Her thoughts remained focused on Justin as she showered and changed in her room. All night she’d slept with Kera
n in the classroom. They made love twice. In the morning, he left her because he had an early meeting with Martin, his Head of Security. Heat fused her cheeks as she recalled the way Keran worshipped her body. His hands on her skin had been demanding and rough. She loved the way he kissed every inch of her plus sized form. No man ever treated her quite like this before. He seemed enraptured with her. Why had they wasted so much time trying to ignore each other?

They were meant to be together.

She knew this now and could only hope he thought the same way.

After she ate her breakfast, Devyn paused in front of the study door. She wanted to go in and be a part of the investigation but when she heard raised voices, she changed her mind. Maybe Keran wouldn’t like the intrusion. If he wanted her to help, he would ask her. If there was any way she could speed up this process, she would have done it, but she couldn’t do anything else other than what she was already doing. Rather than sit inside and wallow in misery, she walked outside. She cast a glance at the flowers Justin helped plant not too long ago. She could only hope the boy would come back before they actually bloomed. She wanted him home now.

He belonged here with his father and with her.

Devyn wanted to gaze into his bright eyes and see the intelligence lurking there. She wanted to run her fingers over his cherubic face and kiss his cheeks. She craved his spontaneous hugs. The feelings she had for him were all maternal. If he was her own son, she couldn’t have loved him more. The thoughts she had of leaving this place were long gone. Even if things didn’t work out between Keran and her, the idea of leaving Justin truly terrified and upset her. He was more than her responsibility; he was her first love. She first fell in love with the child and then the father.

  Love?

Strange, how she could feel so strongly about two people whom she recently met. It’d barely been four months since she met them but already, they were a significant part of her life and she couldn’t imagine a life without them.
