But Diana had seen the essence of pure evil in Paula’s eyes as she raised that rebar to strike, and she had known the horror of a living death. Gentle Matthew claimed Diana would someday find a way to forgive her attacker, and she believed him because his love would lead her there.
But in the meantime, as Danny and Gracie rushed up to say goodbye, Diana wondered aloud as she looked out at the fields where Tom Dooley’s ghost still roamed. “Did any good come of this whole stinking mess?”
Danny instinctively understood as he patted his greyhound’s sleek head. “Well sure, Diana. I got me a good dog.”
