Rob
“Will you be my Valentine?”
“Excuse me?” Rob swiveled to face the man who was leaning on the bar beside him. Just what I don’t need. A drunk alpha who wants a quick fuck. His fingers tightened around the stem of his wine glass and he took a gulp, enjoying the burn as he threw the rich merlot down his throat. He figured if he ignored the asshole beside him, he’d pester someone else.
“Well?”
Fuck! Rob had been looking forward to being by himself all day. One hour to read, have a drink and enjoy the balmy tropical air. Is that too much to ask? He jerked his head at a dripping wet omega who’d just climbed out of the nearby pool. The omega swaggered toward a sun lounger as water spilled from his bronzed chest but his eyes never left the alpha at Rob’s side. “Ask him. I’m sure he’s into chocolates, flowers and other shit associated with an over-commercialized holiday.”
“Bitter much?”
Rob took a deep breath and gripped his glass. He counted to ten, hoping the urge to empty his wine on the alpha’s head would fade. “Look buddy, I’m not interested.” He pointed to the pool surrounded by swaying palm trees and beyond to the white, sandy beach. “There are plenty of omegas who’d enjoy a night in your bed. But I’m not one of them.”
“Pity.”
Rob kept his eyes on the wine as he swirled it, not wanting to glance at the intense green eyes that were boring into him. What is his problem? “I didn’t come here looking for a pickup, a one-night stand or a mate. I came for peace and quiet and to do some work.”
“I’m not offering any of those things.”
The omega’s eyes flicked to the tall, muscular alpha beside him who had an unmistakable smirk on his face. He’s enjoying this. He tried to ignore the man’s intoxicating musky aroma as it tickled his nostrils and curled its tendrils around him. He leaned away from the alpha and his provocative scent and concentrated on his irritation at the interruption. “So, you looked around the bar, found the one guy who was minding his own business and thought you’d ruin his night?”
“Nope.”
Rob waited, expecting the alpha to continue. The silence, along with the humid air and the irresistible fragrance, weighed on him until the tension was so tight, he couldn’t stand it any more. “Okay, I’ll bite.” He threw his hands in the air. “What the fuck are you doing?”
The corner of the alpha’s eyes crinkled, and he plonked himself on the stool beside Rob. “I already told you.”
The omega groaned inwardly as his companion grinned. “Jesus, you’re a man of irritatingly few words.”
“Interesting.” The alpha stroked his bristly chin. “I’ve always been told I talk too much. Though my sister chatters way more than I do.”
“I’m not interested in your family history and you’re avoiding my question.”
The alpha ordered a beer and waited until the barman had placed the drink with a head of thick froth in front of him. He grabbed a handful of nuts and threw them in his mouth. Rob eyed his long slender fingers and shivered as a primal instinct, buried deep in his sub-conscience stirred and threatened to overtake him. He blinked and shook his head as he pushed it away.
Instead, he focused on the tinge of sunburn on his companion’s cheeks and stifled an overwhelming urge to rub aloe vera over the alpha’s damaged skin. He buried his nose in the wine glass as he took deep breaths, willing away the tingling sensation that spread from his fingertips to his toes. Ignore it, Rob.
“I’m a little embarrassed,” the alpha mumbled as a darker pink stained his cheeks.
“At propositioning someone?”
“It’s not that.”
“Oh, you’re an old hand but you’re not used to being turned down?”
“Stop.”
“I will if you give me an explanation.”
“It’s my family.”
The omega closed one eye and cocked his head. “I’m intrigued. Go on.”
“They’re staying here at the resort—well some of them are—and the others will be here in a few days.”
Rob rolled his eyes. “I’m sure they’re lovely but your family dynamics is not the issue.”
“Okay. They’re interested in… I mean they really want…”
The omega wrinkled his nose. “If this is some weird shit you’re proposing, I want nothing to do with it.”
“Do you always do that?”
“What?”
“Jump to stupid conclusions.”
“You said…”
“Let me finish.”
The omega shrugged. “Okay.”
“They want to meet my mate.”
Really? Rob scanned the bar and adjoining pool. “Not here.” He leaned over the bar and then peered into the alpha’s beer. “I don’t see him.”
“Are you done?”
The omega bit his bottom lip to smother a grin. “Losing your mate is not a good sign.”
“Noah.”
“Did you ever consider Noah may have headed for the hills?”
“I’m Noah.” He emphasized the first word.
“Are you sure about that?”
“Listen we’re getting off track.”
The alpha reached for more nuts as Rob outstretched his fingers toward the same bowl. When Noah’s hand brushed over his own, a ripple of pure pleasure washed over the omega. It was as though he was in a warm bath and the water was lapping against his body and soothing the aches and pains.
“My family are here for a week and they’ve been pestering me to find a mate.”
“And you were hoping the first omega you saw would be the one?” Rob gave three slow claps. “I can’t understand why you haven’t found a mate yet. You’re a real catch.”
“You’re doing it again.”
“Sorry.”
“They’ve been bugging me for ages and I couldn’t stand it any more, so I told them I had a date.”
Rob snorted. “Alphas and omegas don’t date. The attraction is a feral one that no one can explain or identify. It just happens and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
The alpha tapped his fingers on the bar as he chewed more nuts. “That’s not true. There’s this new dating app for alpha and omegas whose families really want them to mate and produce grandkids.”
“And what’s this to do with me and Valentine’s Day?”
Noah scratched behind his ear and made a face. “My sister thought I said mate not date when I spoke to her.”
The omega shrugged. “So? How hard is it to correct someone?”
“You don’t know my sister.”
Rob eyed him up and down. “You are an alpha, right?”
“Ouch! Anyway she was prattling on, and I just let her run with it and didn’t think much more about it. I thought I’d call her in a few days and set her straight. Make a joke of it, you know?”
“Can’t say I do.”
“But
she and her mate turned up unexpectedly today and announced they’re here to celebrate our union on Valentine’s Day. And my dads are coming in two days from now.”
“Do you hate your family?”
Rob’s question was met with a frown. “On the contrary, I adore them. They’re completely bonkers, but they’re my family. Why do you ask?”
The omega raised a brow. “Oh, I don’t know. Just a crazy random thought.” He jiggled the nuts in his palm. “Let me see if I have this straight. You didn’t correct your sister’s misunderstanding about having a mate, which is effectively a lie. And your family is so excited they’re arriving in droves. But instead of being upfront, you’re trying to wriggle out of your predicament.”
“When you put it like that it sounds bad.”
“You think?” Rob rubbed his face. “You’re unbelievable.” He took another sip of wine. “Wait. Do you live here?”
“Yeah. Well, no.”
“Seriously?”
“Stop that. You’re twisting my words. I run a dive business down the beach and I have a lot of clients staying here at the hotel.”
“Sounds like you’re up shit creek without a paddle.”
“Nice!” Noah sipped his beer. “But that’s why I approached you.”
Rob studied the bottles lined up against the back wall. “You want to mate with me?”
“Oh, God no!”
Ouch! “Tell me how you really feel, why don’t you?”
Noah raked his fingers through his dark hair. “Pretend. Like they do in those stupid rom-coms on TV.”
“A sham relationship?”
“My family will be so disappointed if I tell them the truth.”
“And you think they won’t be upset when they eventually find out you tricked them?” Rob couldn’t get his head around the alpha’s ridiculous plan.
Noah shrugged. “I’ll tell them he ran off or…”
Rob’s heart sped up and goosebumps covered his arms and chest. He clenched his fists. Don’t say it.
“…something.”
The omega exhaled and downed the rest of his wine. I need to get away from this ass. “I have to go.”
“Wait!”
“Sorry. It was fun listening to your tale of woe, but I have to get back to my room. It’s late.” He didn’t bother pointing out he had a three-bedroom villa with a pool and not an actual room. “Choose someone else.” He nodded at the omegas swarming around the bar.
Noah’s eyes flicked to the pink and purple sky as the sun slid below the horizon. “It’s not dark.”
“I’ve been up since five this morning, and I’m exhausted.” Rob put the drink on his room tab and flung a tip on the wooden bar top before getting up.
“So you’re not going to help?”
“By conning your family? No. Besides, it’d never work.”
“How do you know?”
“They’d see through us in an instant. You can’t fake being mated.”
“I thought if I stuck my tongue in your ear, pinched your ass and threw in a few loving expressions, they’d be convinced.”
Rob turned on his heel, rage clawing at his insides and his eyes heavy with unshed tears. “You have no idea what it means to be mated,” he spat at the alpha. “You’re connected by mind, body and soul. You’re each other’s better half. That can’t be faked and your family will see through the deception.”
Blood drained from Noah’s face. “Sorry. It was a joke—a lousy one, I admit.” He outstretched a hand. “Can I make it up to you by buying you dinner?” He pointed to the omega’s empty glass. “Or another wine?”
Rob took a step back. “Forget it. I have to be going.”
“But you should eat.”
“Why? Do I look thin?” The omega bristled at the suggestion when he’d always been so fit. He used to visit the gym four times a week but he hadn’t had time in the last 18 months. He’d lost weight but he didn’t think he was skinny. Though when he looked in the mirror every morning, his cheekbones were more prominent than in the past.
“No. You look great.”
“Gee, thanks.”
Noah peered around the crowded bar. “Or are you meeting someone?”
“No!” A hush fell over the room and Rob’s skin prickled as he sensed all eyes were on him. Damn him.
Someone whispered, “Lover’s quarrel,” and there were scattered sniggers.
“I’ll order room service.”
The omega pushed through the crowd and raced along the pebbled paths lined with fragrant tropical flowers. He breathed in the perfumed air. They’ll help get rid of that alpha stink. He paused as his pulse slowed, and he allowed the warm, scented air to calm him. As he reached his private villa, he closed the door and shut out the world. Going for a drink was a bad idea. I should have stayed here.
“Is that you, Mr. Rob? I didn’t expect you back so soon.”
The omega sat on the side of the pool with his feet dangling in the warm water. He sipped mint tea as it was late and he didn’t want caffeine or any more alcohol. Moonlight reflected in the still water and the rustling of palm fronds in the background had memories tripping over themselves. He’d been at another resort, far from this one, more than two years ago when he’d spent a vacation with his newly mated alpha brother, Matt, and his omega.
The three of them had spent an idyllic seven days swimming, snorkeling and exploring the surrounding countryside. Rob recalled the loving embraces as they parted at the airport, when the couple was headed home, and he was off on assignment. Matt had told him not to be a stranger before the pair had waved and disappeared through the departure gate.
But another voice intruded on his thoughts. This one more mellow and annoying than the one he’d been thinking about. He froze as it thundered over the wall that separated the villa from the rest of the resort.
“Hello! Hello?”
What the ever-loving fuck?
The doorbell chimed, and Rob leapt up and raced inside toward the front entrance. He flung open the door without checking the peephole or security camera. “What the hell are you doing? It’s late. Didn’t you see the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign?” He stabbed at the electronic panel with the three words spelled out in big red letters. It was only after he took a breath that he focused on the face in front of him. “God, it is you! I thought I was imagining things.”
The alpha leaned against the door frame holding flowers in one hand and with a box of chocolates tucked under his arm.
“Guilty.”
He’s not embarrassed at barging in. “How did you find me?”
Tapping the side of his nose, the alpha mumbled, “I never disclose my sources.” He held out the flowers, and Rob eyed the gorgeous hibiscus, bird of paradise, wild ginger and orchids in the bunch.
“Did you steal these from the hotel gardens?”
“Oops. Guilty again.” The alpha held up his arms in surrender and waggled the flowers above the omega’s head.
“And cheap.”
“Hey, it’s hard to get flowers late at night. I banged on the hotel florist’s door but no one answered.”
Rob stepped outside but left the door ajar. He crossed his arms and glared at Noah. “You’re stalking me.”
“No. This is an apology tour.”
The omega glanced at his phone. “It’s after eleven. I’d call that stalking.” He sniffed and caught a whiff of stale beer. “You’ve been drinking. I should call security.”
Noah held up one finger. “Just the one I ordered when you were there. Scout’s Honor.”
Rob snorted, “Can’t see you as a Boy Scout.”
The alpha grinned. “I’m full of surprises. I won badges for basket weaving.”
“You’re joking.”
“Maybe.” Noah cocked his head.
The omega dragged his eyes away from his visitor and studied the solar lanterns dotted amongst the palms lining the pathways. He nibbled his bottom lip to suppress a giggle. What’s wrong with me? He’s obnoxio
us. I can’t let him get to me.
“Of course, he is. He couldn’t weave a basket if he tried.” A tiny female omega much smaller than Noah and half a head shorter than Rob, but with the same high cheekbones and full mouth as the alpha, charged toward the alpha with her arms outstretched. “You don’t know how we’ve been looking forward to this.”
“Nat!” Noah jumped between both omegas, but she swerved around him. “Have you been following me?”
“Yes. Dan and I were on our way back from a walk on the beach when we saw you skulking through the shadows with goodies in your hands.”
“Shit!”
An embarrassed-looking alpha appeared from the shadows and waved at Noah. “Hi. Sorry to interrupt.”
Stalking must be a family trait.
“Perfect. Everyone’s here except our dads.”
“I’m Natalie, Noah’s sister. But call me Nat.” The omega flung out her arms and enveloped Rob in a bearhug. “I’m so excited to have a new brother. This one,” she jerked her head at Noah, “can be such an ass.”
Despite Rob’s horror and confusion at being drawn into family drama, having Nat’s arms around him was comforting and provided the omega with something he’d been longing for: companionship.
“We’ve heard so much about you.” Nat’s brightly colored earrings jangled as she stood on tiptoes to give her brother a kiss.
“All of it good, I hope.”
“She’s fibbing. I’ve said very little about our relationship.” Noah glared at his sister. “It’s all so new. We’re still discovering things about one another.”
“Pfft.” Nat flicked her wrist at her brother. “When I mated with Dan, I was on the phone for hours telling everyone about him.”
Why does that not surprise me?
“Aren’t you going to invite us in, Noah? I’ve never been inside a private hotel villa. Why didn’t you tell me you had one? Our suite is tiny. Have you got a pool? I’d love a midnight dip. I’m so sweaty.” Nat paused for breath as she leaned around Rob and peered inside.
