Reba laughed again. “Let me think about that for a moment.”

“You have to think about it?”

“Don’t want to just let my emotions carry me away…”

Lucas broke into a grin beside her.

“…gotta be rational about this kind of thing, you see,” she continued, sounding very earnest about it. “Biting your head off could turn out to be the right option, after a proper analysis of the situation.”

  “R-Reba?”

“But I’ve decided to hug you instead, you Bad Friend, trying so hard to make me happy like this! And succeeding, too.”

They hugged, with Maggie squeezed gently in between and Lucas looking on, still grinning. His gaze met Reba’s and she started to melt as she always did when they were close. As she always would, she knew, for the rest of her life.

He brushed her face with his cupped hand, and together they looked down at their daughter, who was fast asleep.

“Think we’re all ready for this, little girl?” Reba whispered. Maggie’s peaceful expression suggested that she was. “Lucas, if you want me to come down the aisle toward you, it might be time for you to get ahead of me, now.”

“If I can manage to let you go,” he whispered back.

“It won’t be for long, and afterward you’re going to have a hard time letting me go again, ever.”

  “Here goes, then.”

He squeezed her hand and disappeared into the church. A minute later, the music of the organ swelled, signaling the start of Reba’s journey toward her future, and she walked up the aisle to where Lucas was waiting for her and smiling at her with their beloved daughter’s happy eyes.
