Baxter smirked. “After all that time you’ve spent latching onto me, I’m starting to sense when you’re nearby. Didn’t think you could spend this much time with someone and not grow some kind of bond, did you?”

Jennie smiled. “Well, if there’s anyone I’m happy to see right now, it’s you.”

Baxter returned the smile, then cocked his head at the solemn expression on Jennie’s face. “What’s eating you?”

Jennie frowned. “I want to protect people, and for that I need help. The spectral world is still a mystery for most mortals, and I need experts.” Her eyes flickered to the door. “I need the best.”

Baxter nodded in understanding. “You need to employ mortal experts in the field of spectral relations, but you’re worried about upsetting the other key players in the game? Pissing the queen off? Going against your agreement?”

Jennie raised a finger. “The agreement didn’t state that our agents couldn’t switch teams.”

Baxter chuckled. “There’s a reason I chose technology over politics. I don’t envy you, Genevieve King. You’re playing the impossible game, and no matter how you play it, it’s going to piss people off. The real question is, are you playing it for the side of good?”

Jennie chewed her lip. For years she had avoided this moment, knowing that it was easy to keep her head down and stay quiet. But now, things were accelerating at an alarming rate, and the manor she had purchased as a base of operations was going to need the world’s best in order to achieve the vision she saw in her mind.

She didn’t belong to the federal government, she didn’t belong to the Paranormal Court. Jennie’s mission was to remain a neutral force that could support any and all bodies that dealt with spectral relations and problems. She would learn from the Paranormal Court, she would learn from the SIS, she would learn from the SIA.

She had created the King’s Court, and they would be a force to be reckoned with. Jennie had Justice on her side, and that was the only thing that mattered.

“Jennie?” Baxter nudged, a concerned expression on his face. “Well?”

Jennie took a deep breath and gave a resolute nod. “Yes, Bax. I’m playing on the side of good.”

She pushed open the door and entered, looking into the faces of Rogers, Sturgeon, Jack, Ruby, and a host of other agents she had hand-selected from the previous operation. At the back of the room, Roman and Julia sat sharing the half-eaten remains of a steaming calzone.

Jennie clapped her hands and addressed the rooms. “Thank you for joining me, everyone. I’ve got an important question for you all.” She grinned at Baxter. “Shall we begin?”

  Author Notes Michael Anderle

  May 22, 2020

Hello! I appreciate you making it all the way to the back of the book, and here to these author notes before you head on to the next fantastically fun series in your future.

If you have enjoyed the drinks (or the idea of the drinks with Rogue) in this series then we do have a fun book coming that I’ve done with Dan Willcocks related to Rogue and her stories about drinking concoctions.

The funny thing is that I have never personally been drunk. The reason isn’t what you might think, although there might be a little of it, but rather I really hate the flavor of alcohol. So, when I was working my way up post parents and living the dream of a late teenager I never found any drinks worth drinking.

  For me, alcohol tasted horrible.

Coke was where it was at, why add additional horrible flavors just to become stupid? It didn’t make any sense to me at 18 and while I understand it at 50…plus… It is very rare that I have anything with alcohol.

Still, 30 years later, because of the taste.

But, when I conceived of this character, I thought about a person who was world-weary at one point and (unlike today) she was a party animal from way back. Would she have some stories to tell? Would she have known famous people and been a part of famous (or infamous) parties in the past?

Would she have partied enough to make the church blush?

Then, Prince’s song Party Like It’s 1999 came to mind and that sealed the deal. Our protagonist (brought to life by the amazing artist Mihaela who lives in Romania) was complete.

I hope you have enjoyed Rogues story, and seen a bit of a different side of history. Who said that history was written by the winners? As a fiction writer, we get to change history all of the time!
