“I’m sorry. No need to bring up old news,” Heidi said. “My point stands. You guys look good together. And my sister is glowing. I don’t want to be a thorn in your side. I don’t want to cause trouble. I don’t want to be a bitch — I mean, I was a bitch and I’m truly sorry for that. I won’t be one anymore.”
“I just want to know if you guys can forgive me… and if you, big brother, would consider giving me another chance?”
I could feel Hollis’s heartbeat speed up. He looked at me, and I could see his eyes filled with optimism.
“Of course,” he said. “You’re my wife’s sister. Anything she loves, I love.”
I didn’t bother answering Heidi verbally. I just came over to her and hugged her. Tears of joy started to fall from my face, because we hadn’t spoken in so long, and while I was worried about her, I just didn’t have it in me to deal with her after the way things went during our previous discussion.
“I love you,” I said through my tears. “There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do to ensure you were taken care of.”
“I know,” she cried. “I know. I’m sorry. I love you.”
Hollis’s Epilogue
One Year Later
“Gigi Baby, you ready?”
“I’m coming, babe.”
As she descended the stairs, I felt like such a lucky man. My wife was beautiful, more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed of.
She looked like an angel with our child in her stomach.
No, it hadn’t been easy. I lived in pain and embarrassment from being unable to find a woman that truly loved me. There wasn’t any amount of money I could throw at the ones willing to touch me.
But Gigi and I took a risk, and that changed everything.
One year later, here we were, headed to a family dinner. Heidi sat in the living room, waiting on us as well. After her tearful apology, we invited her to move in with us, but she declined.
At eighteen, she wanted her independence. She happily claimed a room all to herself to mold and decorate. It was hers whenever she came over. I didn’t mind. That was the plan all along, right?
“You look so cute carrying my nephew!” Heidi squealed when she saw her sister. “Or niece. Whatever you’re having.”
Grace tossed her a smug, secretive smile. She refused to let anyone know what we were having. Of course, I knew. I was the daddy. But I was sworn to secrecy, and the suspense killed everyone, including poor little Heidi.
Today was our baby shower. The theme was pink and blue, and the gifts we’d chosen were completely unisex.
Nobody would know what we were having until we gave birth. Grace even had prank gender reveal cakes made. One with blue icing… and the other pink. But the inside of the blue cake was pink, and inside of the pink cake, was blue.
Such a little smartass she is, my wife.
But that’s why I loved her. The ability to keep things interesting, genuine, and family-oriented.
Heidi wasn’t so bad either, especially once she saw that I was genuinely a good guy who wanted nothing more than to love her sister.
The baby shower was marvelous. My wife and I had a blast. And from the looks of it, so did Heidi and Kendan, until we caught them in a corner, thiiiiiiiis close to making out with one another…
Money can’t buy me love.
But it can buy me an opportunity, and that was fair enough.
